    if i wanted to build for another frequency, say 15m, would the trifilar still be 8 turns? obviously my other option would be another mixer up front converting 15m down to 7MHz, (or even 10.1MHz because i have a nice xtal if filter at 10.1 on hand), but i like the simplicity to start with

      From the original article... the transformer will stay the same no matter what band you build it for. You just have to change the 100pF capacitors from the oscillator circuit. I think the more you go towards 80m the less capacity you need... the more you go towards the 10m band the more capacity you need. I am not sure is just what I remember from playing around with VXO circuits in the past. Everything else will remain the same. Of course... you are using the crystal of choice. I also loved the simplicity and that is the reason I didn't want to "complicate" the circuit trying to improve anything but the VXO. love it just as it is. 73, YO6DXE. Wow very nice receiver for it's simplicity. It's definitely made for you 😄. soo let me add my spices on it 😜... You can add 2 diodes in the mixer it's definitely gonna be better , also extra two diode won't kill anybody. 😃. For more stability inductor and crystal should be in aluminum box. That's it anything else will make it complicated.

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer 3 дня назад

      The oscillator would definitely be better enclosed. I was wondering if using a 4 diores ring mixer would be better. But since I don't know much yet about the DC receivers... I was really into experimenting to see how that works hahaha. Thanks buddy. I need to find a schematic and see how I add the other two. It's easier to understand when I see a schematic 😅.

    I just made this Sputnik, but I cannot check the frequency using the counter. Is it needed a preamp between L3 and the counter? 😁 Secondly, I think I have to replace 1N4001 with BB405, as it now the tuning does not work properly. 😅

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer 4 дня назад

But if tuning doesn't work with a 1N4001.. chances are there is another problem there. It should work, just that the frequency range you cover may not be as wide. Try checking the potentiometers, especially the RF gain and regen control. Those were the issues I had using new and cheap but really bad quality potentiometers. As soon as I replaced them all worked fine )).

    Why do you test the attenuation on the center conductor while the unwanted common mode current flows on the external side of the braid? You measured the reactance trend of the inductor you made. The result probably won't be much different but a beginner, not knowing how a transmission line works, might think that this attenuates his RF towards the antenna or towards the receiver. The coax of that choke seems to make curves with a radius that is too small (deformation of the dielectric): the minimum bending radius indicated by the manufacturer must be respected. At the end of the story you have not verified the main function of a balun: that of being able to connect balanced elements with unbalanced elements and vice versa in an antenna system without generating side effects. Yet it's not difficult...! You can check my articles (I hope Google will help you about italian): the links are on my QRZ page. It is at that point that a balun must be inserted while a choke can ALSO be useful at the antenna input into a receiver or RTX. 73s

      Ohhh yes it has big effect. That is part of the oscillator circuit so with no 470pF capacitor the circuit will not work at all. 73, YO6DXE ( If you don't have a 460pF capacitor you can try 500pF or 1nF for now as a temporary solution and see if it works. It should but the results won't be so great. You can then replaced it later when you have the right value. )

    I build myself a 'one-Watter', a 30m version. (Made and developed by Dieter Genschow W8diz (sk), the torioid-king), also 'kits.and.parts.com' - is still in bussiness!) The small CW- TRX is also with a VXO, and I can 'sweep' the quartz (12MHz- Type) about almost 18kHz in that circuit! The +/-10 mhz quarzes are the best, to use in a VXO. (When using a super-het, it is no problem at all!) They give you the most range. With 18kHz nearly all of the CW part of the 30m- band is inside of the tuning. ! No need for a vfo or dds or pll. A simple circuitis the best, most of the times! Make things so much easier, ... ! 73 de Markus - db9pz (JN39fq -3miles/5km east of LX)

      @piterstein9625 Ohhhh wow. Excellent results. Yes indeed is a little harder to adjust it with ought measurement equipment. But it seems that even with the 1uH inductor made on T37-6 and the 130pF in parallel does a good job. I keep testing it and if I place the transmitter 20 centimeters away from the transceiver the signal is gone completely on 20m. So it must be a good sign I guess. Not sure about the third harmonic, but I will test that one too later on today on another receiver. Thank you for doing the test. I really appreciate this. 73, YO6DXE.

    Its not as si.ple as sticking a low pass filter on the end of a transmitter. It needs to match the output impedance of the final transistor. This could be quite low. If its a tube it could be quite high. Either way we need to calculate to match into a 50R load.

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer 13 дней назад

      The filter is simulated as 50 Ohm in and 50 Ohm out... I think the only way to adjust the output of the transmitter / transceiver is by adjusting the value of the output capacitor. I have no clue I am not that wise (ha). But this is what I've seen in the past that the more experienced than me that used to do. The Pixie and these simple things I make are pretty much the same it seems. Or maybe an impedance matching transformer ? Thanks Nigel.

    • @multilecful
      @multilecful 13 дней назад

      @dxexplorer just use a filter calculator and adjust the source impedance that way. It's the only way you can transfer the full energy available out to the load or antenna in our case. Otherwise, you will lose energy in the transformation irrespective of spectral purity. Most filters published on the interweb assume 50 in and 50 out. It's simply not the case as an add-on. Unless the final output has a designed impedance of 50R. It's like putting a 32R speaker on the output of an audio amp designed to drive 4R speakers. It works but nowhere near as good as it could.

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer 13 дней назад

      @multilecful yes indeed you are right. Technically the designs were published as having 50 Ohms out... so in theory I should be ok. But it doesn't hurt at all to calculate and see 😁. And here we are I must ad one more beer for you to the list 😅😅😅.

    Try increasing inductance to 1.6uH. For simple filter as it is it's working great, if you want greater results you can try 3 stage filter where you have 3 inductors and 4 capacitors. I have cw transmitter and i am using same 3 stage one. so first and last capacitors are 470pf and middle ones are 820. First inductor is 1.6 second is 2 and third is 1.6. i think this configuration with little changes can almost suppres harmonics

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer 14 дней назад

      The one with three inductors for sure it works way better. I build one in the past with only two inductors and three capacitors and it was doing good already. The reason why I want to see how good the Pi Network filter can get is because all simple transceivers have it... because is really simple I guess. But useless as it seems ))). So to keep things just as simple as they are I am trying to get the best out of it and still keeping it simple. Fingers crossed it works haha. 73 my friend.

      @4L1LAT yes of course. That is for sure. But you know... when someone spent so much time in the past to come up with some extremely simple schematic for something that works really nice... it would be nice to keep that simplicity. Feels good to make something out of nearly nothing 😁. The fun part is how far we can push those limitations. The joy of QRP and homebrew stuff at the end 😅.

    I will suggest that you try adjusting the transformer coil a little by squeezing the coils closer together or spreading them apart. This makes a difference. I noticed you 80 meter had high SWR at the low end but the impedance was just about right and very close to 50 ohms. When you moved the VNA marker higher in frequency and the 80 meter SWR came down to about 1.5:1 the impedance went way low. Some adjustment in the transformer coil will change this. You might even need to remove one turn of the toroid coil.

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer 15 дней назад

      Yes indeed. I only learned about this afterwards. It took a lot of headaches hahaha and experiencing with both the 49:1 and also the 64:1 transformers to see what works better. Also another problem I noticed was the placement of the RF choke. Since I moved it close to the transceiver the results are way better... and also the type of RF choke seems to matter a lot too. Now I no longer have this antenna as I moved into a new place and I don't have as much space. I am working on building the shortened version that has the coil at the end almost. But talking about the RF choke... while testing the new antenna I realized I had 1:1.3 with the coax RF choke type... and 1:1.04 with the one made with parallel insulated wires. Impedance was the same on both. Is nice in a way that I get to learn and experiment and realize how everything interacts together and influence the result at the end. With headaches or not... is the best hobby as I learned more now than ever. Love it. Thank you for the tips as well. 73, YO6DXE.

  • @grzesiek1x

    I understand this projexct because I have built a similar one but only one question. How do you obtain that audible signal when you just only produce a high frequency signal on and off while transmitting (so of course it can't be heard if there is only carrier wave)? Or maybe there is a special set up or something from the receiver side?

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer 19 дней назад

      Well... take the transmitter as a simple oscillator, same as a VFO. Basically if you tune a receiver on the same frequency as the VFO... you will hear the oscillator sound on that particular frequency. The transmitter is almost the same, except that the power output ( RF ) is a little higher and it has a fixed frequency because we are using the crystal. I beleive the output is AM but I don't want to say stupid things (ha). But since you hear both sidebands I guess it is AM. Basically we receive the tone generated by the oscillator. Not sure if it makes sense what I am saying, too tired after a very long day 😁. 73, YO6DXE.

    • @grzesiek1x
      @grzesiek1x 18 дней назад

      Your comment doesn't make any sense but what I think the receiver just takes the difference between the signal receiver (in this case only carrier wave) and the frequency from the local oscillator at that receiver so probably the sound you hear would be judt that difference of two frequencies in audiable range. This would mean that I need a special receiver for CW 🤔 Do you hear this sound on a normal portable Radio tuned to amator band frequency?

    • @grzesiek1x
      @grzesiek1x 18 дней назад

      *signal received

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer 18 дней назад

      Yep... you got it right. I tried to explain the easy way (ha). Normally yes, for CW and SSB signals you need a receiver that can receive SSB or CW. With a regular AM receiver you may still pick up something depending on the receiver, but in order to hear it properly you will need a BFO ( beat frequency oscillator ). Basically another oscillator 😅. I just tested a receiver now ( AM broadcast receiver ) and see if I can hear CW from the transmitter. I can hear i am transmitting but it sounds more like interrupted static... not the normal transmitter sound.

    These are also known as an "upper and outer" or "up-and-outer" or "Vertical L" antennas, and work great! I've also seen versions which have links to connect or disconnect parts of the wire to allow operation on shorter wavelengths, as well as coils being used for lower bands. I find a ratio of around 55% (V) to 45% (H) for 20 m is a great starting point, with the radial aprox 1m off the ground, and running fairly parallel with the ground. So easy to build and deploy, just a vertical pole and single elevated radial. Its a pity that more folk don't seem to know about them - so thank you for taking the time to create and share this video. Another great option is a Flower Pot antenna if you want something quick to deploy that also works really well, just a single vertical pole needed (but hard to make for the lower bands given the height, 20m is easy though). 73s from 2E0JHJ.
