    • @mygardenanddinosaurs
      @mygardenanddinosaurs 8 дней назад

      I think that is generally the thinking but if you give them a more natural environment then they most certainly will hatch their own. I use a hemp bedding which is great. Poo dries and desiccates so no poo balls and the quail love dust bathing in it.

    Morning Mags, I'm planning on planting out my onions and garlic this week, but it's quite wet again. ☔️ Why is it always nice when we are working? 😂 You had a fabulous Gigantes harvest... unfortunately, all of mine had cross pollinated. 🤦‍♀️ Those dwarf beans in the trug looked so lush for this time of year. They must really like that sheltered spot! I hope you enjoyed them with your carrorts and cottage pie... nice comforting food for this time of year!!!

    • @mygardenanddinosaurs
      @mygardenanddinosaurs 3 дня назад

      Thanks Annie. Yes, the beans were great. I've had another harvest off them too. Def like the spot as the others I planted further up the garden didn't manage to give me anything. Your giant runner cross looked fab though. Did you eat them? My bought in garlic and elephant garlic has arrived so they will need to go in at some point.

    That crystal peak flower we call and obedient plant here....push a flower sideways and it stays obediently in that position, at least for a while. I think they are very pretty, but I've had problems with them over wintering even though they should be ok even up into lower Canada. Great harvests for this point in the season. Great that you can keep going. Those big pots were a bargain. Always great to support a charity as well.

    • @mygardenanddinosaurs
      @mygardenanddinosaurs 3 дня назад

      Ooh, I must try that out - sounds fun. I'm loving the big pots, lots growing well in them. The garden still has many over-grown areas that I want to try to sort out over the winter. I hope I can keep motivated when it gets colder. Happy gardening. Mags

      @@mygardenanddinosaurs We've been warmer than normal here, so my plants are going on longer...no complaints. However, I do need to clear some things. The pollinators are making me feel guilty as they are sucking what's left from the remaining blooms.

    Love the video Mags. Lots of information to process and very beginner friendly. They makes such lovely noises and look so cute but are they easy to handle. Some places say that quail should be kept in short squat accommodations as they are good flyers who scare easily and fly straight upwards with the potential, with ceiling space over a certain height, to risk breaking their necks. Your birds seem so calm that I wonder if this is more applicable to quail kept as game birds rather than pets. You also never mentioned food and although I know you feed them lettuce, I am sure that is not all they eat. One further query I personally have (I am also in Scottish central belt) is how readily available are the supplies or do you need to get them from specialists. I am sure I will have loads more comments and questions as this series progresses and am really looking forward to the next one.

    • @mygardenanddinosaurs
      @mygardenanddinosaurs 17 дней назад

      Hi Donna. Glad you enjoyed the video and found the contents useful. Yes, you regularly hear people say that you should have very low roofs on the runs as quail can flush up when scared and break their necks. In six years I have never had this happen - touch wood. I think, as you note, my birds are calm which helps. They could still get a fright I suppose. I try to make the ceiling flexible, I.e. many of the runs have polycarbonate roofs which give a little when bashed. Some people hang a net under the roof to act as a baffle. I feel that by giving the quail more head room they can enjoy little flights and can bounce about and generally be more active. As for food. I will do a video specifically about this but in short their main feed is quail pellets. These are a high protein food specifically formulated for quail. Any animal food merchants should be able to source it but I actually get mine through amazon. I also feed them veggies like cabbage, lettuce and chard and all sorts of herbs. Hope this helps. All the best. Mags

      Glad you felt inspired to try quail keeping yourself. Yes, one challenge with them is that they can be aggressive to one another in certain circumstances. I like the boys calling noise but agree it can be noisy when you have several calling back and forth. Sorry to hear you lost a couple to rats. Hope the others are still doing well. All the best. Beautiful healthy looking peppers. You could take the plant indoors. Somewhere warm and access to light. It would survive and you can return it to the tunnel next year. Peppers are perennials and will live for years.If you take the plant indoors it will continue to fruit. Check daily for white fly. I spry every few days with water,washing up liquid and garlic mixture.

    Congratulations on 2k Mags 🎉🎉. We had as you know a super hot and sunny summer Mags and my tomatoes were not as prolific this year and ripening was a huge issue. My Sungold were good but like your not prolific either. But onions look massive so we have to take the good with the bad as gardeners. Cut the mashed potato squash in half roast with butter and scoop out to eat. I know Cherie the English Lady cooks hers in the microwave (cut in half I think 🤔). We still have cabbage whites but it is 6c overnight and morning so hopefully most are done. Hopefully your winter veg all do well. Have a fab week hope it’s a good one, Ali 🥶🌞🇨🇦

    Hi Mags, your garden is looking amazing, you have worked wonder with it, when you look back to how it was when you first moved there. Ive done well with tomatoes this year but they have struggled to get ripe and I still have plenty of green ones. My French climbing beans have finished now and they are disappointing, I did get some but not in the quantities as usual, but I sowed some dwarf beans and they are full of flowers but it might be too late to get beans from them, I'll leave them in and see if the weather is kind for a bit longer. The marking on your pepper is called corking and is usually seen on some chillies, they will be OK to eat, they just don't look great but added to a sauce you won't notice the marks.

      Thanks so much Liz. I'm glad you can see a difference. It has been such hard work to get where I am with lots more to go. It is never going to be a show garden, it is more a farm or market garden with the fruit and veg, chickens and quail but that's fine by me. Thanks for the corking info. Sorry to hear about your climbing beans. I also have dwarf beans in flower. Fingers crossed we get a harvest. I'm also waiting patiently for my greek gigante beans. I hope to get a good crop there but time will tell. All the best. Mags.

    Hi Mags - I love the idea of breaking up some of the plastic with flower pots BUT remember that it’s impermeable and unless you pop some drainage under the pots, you may find them getting waterlogged as they stand in the water rolling down the plastic. Possibly just elevate the base of the pots if you don’t want to damage the plastic.

    Thanks Mags. I enjoyed your video. My harvests of tomatoes and peppers were pretty much the same as yours. I'm pretty disappointed compared with the harvests from previous years. Only thing I'll be planting over winter is garlic. Fingers crossed for a decent harvest next year. 🤞

      Hi Mags. Sorry you are in the same boat as me with your Toms. Lets blame the weather and look forward to success next year. I will be putting in garlic and elephant garlic too. Still waiting on it being delivered though. I will put in one ot two of this years garlic as well. Take care. Mags

    Absolutly adorable, considering these as pets for my family. What's your experience keeping quails in that size of habitat? Some googling said 1,5m tall habitat because of quails tend to jump upwright if it gets scared, is it something with the type of breed or?

    Hello, I really like the additional wood and screen you added to the bed. Your garden is coming along quite nice since moving there. You have put a lot of effort into it for sure.

    I have one apple 😂 on my super dwarf apple tree every year. You can put organza bags on them if you think it’s birds. Great new bed Mags 👍👍. Yes like my vegepods they take loads of soil 🤦‍♀️ but I love them. Fab cage too let’s hope the cabbage whites are done soon 🤣🤣 it doesn’t deter the girls though. Some wonderful harvests Mags, have a lovely weekend, Ali 🌦️🇨🇦

      I hope it is a tasty apple and worth waiting for. I’m happy with progress. I hope over the Autumn and Winter I will get even more of the garden knocked into shape. Take care. Mags

    If you can't see the hills, it's raining. If you can see the hills, it going to rain!! 🤣 Great stuff Mags but not sure about the apple damage - I'm a fruit novice! I have 6 beds similar to yours to fill, 2 are 2.4m long. I'm gonna need a shed load of compost so I'll be doing similar to you.

      Omg those beds are going to take some filling right enough. Good luck with it. All the best. Mags.

      @@mygardenanddinosaurs And this is why I am stalling for a while. Gonna cost a bit even with hergle fregle culture, plus I don't want to waste the nutrients over Winter!

    Hello Mags hope you are doing well. As for my tomatoes they did really well none had blossom rot. I utilized Dolomitic limestone in my potting soil about a fist full😊
