This Class 40 weekend at the East Lancs Railway actually only featured 2 Class 40s, D345 and 40 012 - and then 40 012 didn't make an appearance until late on the Saturday as it apparently failed in the morning. Also running were West Country 34092 'City of Wells', 37 109 and Lancashire & Yorkshire Class 27 '2890' which was running the diner train. This video finishes with a walk around the Bury...

What is the old unit at 3:50?
Sorry Paul, I’ve no idea. I didn’t write it down at the time, and I’m not sure I would have known for certain back then anyway. Perhaps someone else on here could let us know? 🙏
Excellent video, very clear images full of interest, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it, John. When putting it together, I surprised myself with how much variety I’d seen this year. Look out for part two on New Year’s Day. thanks for watching. Geoff. 👍😊
Fantastic
Thanks Craig. Of course you were there for some of those 😊👍. see you again at Carlisle during 2025 no doubt 🤞. Cheers. Geoff.
@ you will definitely
Part two landing on New Year’s Day. 😊
Some fantastic shots, watched all of your vids over and over again. Would love to go back to this time 👍
Glad you enjoyed them. The 1980s tapes sat in a cupboard in my hobby room for over 30 years, until it occurred to me that many other enthusiasts might like to see them - hence me starting the channel. Comments such as yours make all the effort worthwhile. Thanks again. Geoff. 👍😊
Superb!!!!!!
Thank you! Cheers! 👍😊
Brilliant footage - my home station in the late '70s & early '80s 47's and 50's were the order of the day and we viewed HST's as a lower class of train. Don't remember seeing too many 'grids' around then though.
Thanks, glad you liked it. Sorry there aren’t more shots of DMUs and HSTs, but battery life was a real issue back in the ‘80s and I couldn’t really afford to waste power on “the lower class of train 😊” when there were so many loco-hauled trains to capture. Thanks for watching and commenting. 👍😊
11:49Use of a BRUTE as a step ladder to reach the signal 😀 Health & Safety at Work! 😄
That alone dates the video somewhat, doesn’t it 😄
Tyseley unit pulling out of the bay platform at4:30 ... 🤔 And boy, what a smokescreen it's laying 🙃
Roarer galore 😜😜😁
Glad you liked it - wish I had more footage!👍😊
Really good video, I don`t remember it being so worn out and dirty back then, but it was.
Yes, I agree. It would seem by the time Privatisation was mooted the railway was really in need of some investment - whether or not the private involvement was a success or not is a debatable point I suppose, but there no escaping the money was needed . Thanks for commenting.
I've watched this video a couple of times now. I love it. Proper locomotives pulling proper trains on a proper railway. Glory days indeed
Thanks Paul, I’m glad you enjoyed it so much. Even though I know I filmed all the shots, it seems like somebody else’s video now, as so much time has passed and it looks like a totally different country/ time. I guess this is what getting old means!!😆😆 Cheers for commenting….Geoff .
Seeing Reading like that reminds me of being a little boy at the station. Loved all the different locos we used to get here, nice to see 59001 which I still see go through Reading in 2024.
That’s cool; I’d have never thought 59 001 would still be going now when I first saw it back in the ‘80s. Glad my video brought back memories, thanks for watching and commenting 👍😊
Reading used to be great on Saturdays used to go 1983 to 1987 good times sadly gone. Thank you for lovely video enjoyed a lot good quality for the time.😃
Thanks Keith. Yes, like you I have many happy memories of Reading (as evidenced by my other videos on the channel), and would probably still be going there if we hadn’t moved away from London. All shots in this particular video were filmed on my father-in-law’s Panasonic VHS video camera - the sort that was a separate camera and recorder connected by a cable! You can just see me in the left hand corner of the thumbnail with the tripod, and my brother-in-law and missus are seen in the actual video at West Drayton leaping out of the way! As you say, not bad quality for the period, but I noticed a massive improvement when I bought my own Sony Video 8 camcorder the following March. Thanks for watching and commenting……Geoff.
Fabulous video, such fond memories.....best wishes...Mark
Thanks very much Mark. Some great stuff on your channel too. Appreciate you taking the time to comment - thanks again Geoff.
The amazing Hst and their livery’s that thay once carried 👍
Yes. When putting this compilation together I was surprised how many there were/ are; and of course, I’ve probably missed more than I’ve actually filmed in reality! Thanks for watching and commenting - Geoff 😊👍
@@OldOakTrains thanks 😂👍I miss those HST
Great video mate. GBRf have some nice liveries on some of their 66s, the tube map livery on 66721 has to be one of the best in my opinion
Yes ‘Crowe, the variety of liveries certainly helps keep the interest going in the modern scene. Agree the Tube map version is particularly attractive. Thanks for watching - Geoff 👍😊
interesting the first train pulled out almost exclusively 1st class ??
Not noticed that before - perhaps someone on here knows why that was - or was it just a one-off ?
Probably a Sunday relief service to the West Country using a rake of spare coaches Old Oak assembled
@5:18 253 053 aka 43053 has sadly been scrapped now just been checking the list of HST still running
An exceedingly successful diesel type though, aren’t they - coming up for 50 years!
I’m always glad that the diehard train spotters types went out and braved the British weather to make videos and images like this. They are indispensable to modellers like myself. Many thanks.
You’re welcome. I used to model myself back in the day, so I know how important all view angles can be. 👍😊
A really excellent compilation, turning back the years, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks 😊👍
This railway was built in the days before 'health and safety' and suchlike rules and regulations. This means that it is fun! It is highly recommended and will drop you off at the Laxey Wheel which provides the power for a huge Victorian mining system. It is simple and big engineering at it's best. It is also highly recommended.
Thanks for your interesting comments, and I agree, the Laxey Wheel is a really great example of Victorian engineering and well worth a visit. 👍😊
Epic and legendary at the same time, nothing else to add and nothing else to subtract.
Yes, a very impressive locomotive withdrawn before their time IMHO. Thanks for commenting 👍😊

What are those blue mk1 carriages on the ends?
I’m not sure which clip you’re referring to, but I’m guessing it’s a Mk 1 BG coach, for parcels and bikes etc. No equivalent was made for the Mark 2 and 3 coaching stock. 👍😊
The variety ,and assortment of motive power is outstanding. Wish that I had been there. Thanks for sharing.(👍).
Thanks for commenting. Yes, WBQ used to be a great location for variety, less so now though of course since the demise of loco hauled passenger services. If you haven’t watched it already, you might find this video from 1989 interesting. We arrived at WBQ at about 11am and stayed until 6-ish. I tried to film every loco hauled movement that afternoon, which produced a video of over 1 hour - enjoy 😉 ruclips.net/video/BG4b_n109sU/видео.html Geoff@OldOakTrains.
This brings back happy memories, though originally I wasn't too keen on this class. When they replaced the Warship diesel-hydraulics on the Waterloo-Exeter route things really slowed down as they were a lot less powerful. But I grew to love em in the end and now really miss them!
Being a South London /Surrey lad at the time, the Class 33s were very much part of the scene for me. I don’t remember them replacing the Warships, but do remember the disappointment when they filled in for a 50 on the W’loo-Ex. But, like you, time has mellowed my view and I quite like them now. 👍😊 Thanks for watching and commenting.
Check out this video, as it has some footage from the first coach behind a Class 33 ‘Slim-Jim’ leaving Waterloo 😊😊😊 ruclips.net/video/6dPDmUevcfg/видео.html
They haven’t got as much character as the diesels from the 1960s, but holy mackerel are they reliable!
And the varied liveries make them more interesting than they might be !
@ yeah that’s true. The British Rail dark blue was a bit boring and repressed
Agree. I started spotting in the days of blue and grey, and remember the excitement NSE, large logo and the GWR repaints brought at the time. Having said that, it’s still great to see a preserved diesel returned to BR blue with yellow ends 😆
those Kronospan trains are a bit of a come come down, from their intended duties, still, great livery, and genius marketing, naming them after thunderbirds,..
Absolutely agree. In my view only just second in the ‘clever name series competition’ to the Class 50s with their British warship names. Glad you enjoyed the compilation 👍😊
Love the 86s' and 87s', the first electric locos that I travelled on from Crewe to London. Incrível vídeo 💗 deixando o like

I spied a 57 'Thunderbird' over the back there,..Warrington,..
The thumbnail picture is from Carlisle actually, but Warrington used to be a good location for Thunderbirds too. 😃. Check out my Thunderbirds compilation….. ruclips.net/video/HQQlKUEJg_4/видео.html Thanks for watching.

Trains in the 1980s - Class 87s in Action
Oh this is music to my ears & they are the best engines out there hands down 👍
Glad you liked it 😊
I loved the open sequence you made for this video, great job!
Thank you very much! Actually the music is part of the intro from one of my songs - “Satan’s Witch”. If you subscribe to my other channel “Non Beviamo”, you will be shortly able to hear the whole 6 minute track (once I’ve uploaded it 😆😆). If you did like the music aspect, you might want to try “Crying in the Darkness”, “Lucy’s World”, “Rock makes me Roll”, or “Blue Lights”, as they are in a similar vein and lyric videos are already on the channel Thanks again .👍😊
Heaven, thank you 🙏🏻 😊
You're welcome 😊
Happy days indeed; I traveled for many thousands of miles behind these beautiful locomotives and was hauled by every single one of the class❗️ MY machine was 50047 Swiftsure, she climbed the ‘Lickey Incline’ from a Red signal at Bromsgrove and topped the Lickey at speed, with a load of 11 coaches, unassisted!! Most notable achievement on a rail tour behind unrefurbished 50011 Centurion on the ‘Citadel Express’. Plymouth to Carlisle and back, using the same locomotive! Over 1100 miles without a locomotive change!! Thank you for for bringing back those glorious days 👍🏻😊🇬🇧
Hi Chris. Thanks very much for your feedback and anecdotes 😃👍. Sadly I was far short of haulage by every class member, although I did manage to photograph all of them. But by the time I got the camcorder, a few had already gone 😩. Perhaps you might enjoy spending an hour or two watching my individual Class 50 compilation videos 😊 - Playlist below: ruclips.net/p/PLtV7Zzuzq6UFRZI1VGaCTPtdIFwWsOpRP
Great video but very sad should neaver have closed
Absolutely. Just imagine how busy the line would be today if it had been kept.
Brilliant video mate, always good to see two steam-hauled tours on the same day. Shame about that TPE bowling you on that shot of Braunton! I was at Preston this day, saw Braunton but unfortunately missed the Tesco and the Northern Belle because they went through at the opposite end of the station to Braunton so I wasn't able to get much of a shot of them
Thanks. Yes, Preston can be difficult sometimes because of the staggered platform lengths at the southern end. The north end of course, is pretty much a non-starter most of the time anyway. 😆
Great footage mate, this was a really good day out. I was at Summerseat for most of the day and it was a very enjoyable day despite 40012's absence for much of the day. Seeing 2890 out and about on that diner was one of the main highlights for me
Yes it was a good day, wasn’t it. 😊 And the rain held off until I was on my way home - result!
Absolutely brilliant stuff mate, really enjoyed this video from start to finish. What a great gala it was, I was at Northwood Halt this day and saw many of the services in this video. The 58 was definitely the star of the show in my opinion, how great was it to see a 58 hauling a passenger train for the first time in 22 years
Nice one😊. We were lucky with the weather too. The 58 was a welcome addition, but I remember when they were in service, not popular with enthusiasts if I recall correctly- generally thought to be ugly. But there you go, different times, different views 😃😃😃.
We didn't realise it at the time, but these were the good days!
Too true. If only we’d had things like Real Time Trains back then ,it would have been perfect! Thanks for watching and commenting Steve. 👍😊Geoff.
At 7:52 we see one of the locomotives on my layout, 47535!
Can train drivers walk through to the other side of the train I know they can't do that with the 125 I'm talking about the diesel trains always wanted to know the question ❓
Hi Victor, thanks for watching. If you mean, can the driver walk through the engine compartment from the cab at one end to the cab at the other end? Then, yes, on practically all the diesel and electric locomotives this is possible (pretty sure it’s not possible on Classes 58 or 70 though). Not sure about Class 66s tbh?
Excellent video 👍 very enjoyable 😊
Thanks for the visit, glad you enjoyed it. 😊
