Sailing Options
Великобритания
Добавлен 20 ноя 2020
Welcome to Sailing Options adventure channel. We explore great cities, sail different seas, document what it's like owning a boat and learn from new experiences and mistakes.
We buy our first boat, renovate it, then sail from Yorkshire to the Mediterranean sea, from Dunkerque through the inland waterways of France "The Long Way DOWN". Leaving the rivers and canals behind us, we enter the Med and "turn left" to see what we can find : Sailing Options "The Long Way EAST"
Options is a great name for our boat, which is a Southerly 115 - Series Two, first launched in 1994. The swing keel design allows this yacht to sail pretty close to the wind with the keel down, run with the wind faster with the keel half way up and float in 1m depth of water with the keel fully retracted into the hull. She stays upright when drying out on mud flats and sand banks. The swing keel gives us more OPTIONS.

Sail across the North Atlantic Ocean in a small boat with three crew
How we sailed across the North Atlantic Ocean to the Windward Islands Pt1. There's always a first time for Ocean Sailing, as it was for all three crew. The challenges started long before getting to our start line. Take one small Blue Water Cruiser, an experienced skipper, add one complete novice and one other sailor, sprinkle with sea water - stand back and watch what happens.
In Part 2 - Iola takes Laurence, Mima and Jonathan away from land into 4000m deep water for a swim! Find out how we cope with sail changes, navigating, weather predicting, cooking, sleeping and living in a confined space rolling constantly from toe rail to gunwale. How long does it take to reach land again?

Thanks for watching and commenting. The adventure gets interesting in part 2. Skipper is interviewed and we learn how to live aboard a constantly rolling home.
Great video. And really great to follow my late Dad’s favourite yacht on her continuing adventures. I’m sure he’s sailing with you all too. Bon voyage for the rest of the journey.
I’m glad you liked the video Alasdair, did you see the previous 2 episodes of out trip from Pwllheli to A Corunna via the Isles of Scilly? Iola is going well and I’ll keep posting some updates on Facebook of my ongoing journey.
Thanks for watching the video Alasdair, and for your kind comment. Iola is very sturdy yacht; your Dad knew his stuff! I hope you will enjoy watching the other videos recounting the Iola Journey! Hi Jonathan and Sheenagh. Congratulations for the challenges you undertake and thank you for sharing them on RUclips. Your videos are awesome. I focused on the LWD series, interested in learning from you everything possible about the French canals and I found them very helpful. Could you please tell me which is the guide book you always have in hand with detailed maps of the canals and the descriptions of each section? Thank you very much and thanks again. All the best. Hi Juan, thanks for watching our videos and your very kind comment, we really appreciate it. I'm guessing you're preparing to explore the French Waterways and I have no doubt that if you do, you will fall in love with them as we did. @@sailingoptions Hi Jonathan and Sheenagh! Thank you for such a quick response! Thank you for the information, I will research on the french waterways website. You had a great holiday too! 😎
Thank you both for that wonderful video, I owned Lazy Days a Dunkirk Little Ship from her arriving back on the Thames in 1995 having just made the RETRURN that happen every 5 years. I had just returned from a contract in Sarnia, Ontario constructing a rail tunnel under the St Clair River to the US, I now needed digs near Heathrow airport and as Lazy Days came with a mooring on the Upper Thames just 7 miles from the site I bought her. I have some boating experience and drove earthmovers, so the twin engines came as second nature and I amazed the RYA examiner gaining my shippers ticket. LD was built in 1930 in a timber yard at Castleford on the Aire & Calder canal up the Humber from the other HULL. She found her way to the Thames in time to be commandeered by Toughs Boat Yard and handed over to the Royal Navy down river. She spent 3 days taking troops off the beach to larger craft offshore, returning to blighty holed at the water but fully loaded with troops. She then spent the rest of WWII patrolling the Thames Estuary searching for enemy parachute mines. After the war she went back up river to quiter times, well a family of four are hardly quite, the son of the family became a captain in the Royal Navy, I'm sure LD played a part in that. One summer a mate and I decided to take LD home, spent time talking to seafarers and as my mate had sailed fishing boats out of Grimsby and was a Merchant seaman retired, I was in good hands. I had a radio interview on BBC Yorkshire and mentioned our plans, contacted the local newspaper and the Yorkshire Post. We were greeted with a warm welcome at each port of call the Dunkirk 1940 polished plaque made sure of that. Stayed overnight at the Waterways Museum in Goole where I flew the St George Cross, the curator chastised me for that as there must be two or more ADLS boats present for it to be flown. I led her to a glass case holding a silver model of MV Chico built for Sir Malcombe Campbell at Goole. She grabbed my hand turned and walked me to her office and we shared some Dunkirk Spirit and was invited to attend their open day 10 days later. Arriving in Castleford and mooring beside the boatyard LD was built in we found a pub next door, the landlord introduced himself and I told the story, he led us across to the boatyard and introduced us. The yard now maintained coal tubs and mini tugs, with a few private jobs in-between. That night a group of Dunkirk vets arrived for baked chees covered tatties and pints to wash them down. The local paper turned up the next day for a chat and photo's, we spent time researching the library but we gave them more info than they had. A visit to the British Legion made us more friends. At the Waterways open day we were dressed all over, had many guest's on board, the reported from the Yorkshire Post arrived and shot off to round up some Dunkirk Vets, sadly they had been to a funeral of a Dunkirk Vet. A bottle was found and we drank to his history and wished him Bon Voyage. I attended the 2000 Return and took a month of work now in Hong Kong, this Return was from Dover where we were inspected by Prince Philip and got a hand shake. The crossing was delayed one day due to high winds, we then set off escorted by a Royal Navy frigate and three Chaser boats. When crossing the shipping we formed 5 rows across to cut the crossing time, the Frigate (sorry name ?) called up a large craft to alter course. The craft was slow to alter so the Frigate made a second call "This is war ship ------ alter course now" it did. The then Prince Charles inspected the ADLS fleet in Dunkirk and a march past of very old Dunkirk Veterans. The remembrance service was taken off the beach with the ALDS forming a sailing circle. Over flown by WWII aircraft the Lancaster bomber dropped poppies, there's a photo of two vets and the cloud of poppies coming down behind them, a wonderful shot. I attended the 2005 Return and many Classic boat rallies in France, Belgium and Holland enjoying it so much, I kept LD in the South of Holland for the last three years I owned her, she would be lift out and stored in a climate controlled shed, that meant the spring clean took days instead of weeks for her to be ship shape again. I sailed down the coast to attend the 2010 RETURN and sold Lazy Days going through the lock into the inner harbour. She then went through three ownerships the second one hand pockets down to his shoes and did a complete refit. The third owners also have deep pockets so Lazy Days will be around for another 80 years. I'm now living in Vietnam growing bananas and lots of other wonderful fruits, visit the UK at 2 or 3 year intervals. Not sure if I'll be visiting with the present climate there again soon, but with my 80th birthday coming soon I should bite the bullet.
I am looking forward to your videos! No worries. You are great and inspiring for me!

Hi Mickey, thanks for watching our video. I'm not sure how to answer this general question. People are different and have different ways of reaching a state of affordability. Thank you for answering and for your offer! Might I ask what version and vintage Options is of? I have tried finding a comprehensive description of the different versions of the 115 and the timeline but have failed so far. Fair winds to you both.
Hi Alexis, The first 115's were built in the early 1980's. Options was built in late 1993, first launched January 1994 and she is a series two, with the modified keel. Later they changed the steering to use two rudders, then the Southerly 38 was launched to replace the 115 in 2008. If you're serious about Southerly yachts check out this membership : www.southerlyowners.com/wp/ JnS
My wife and I, afer considering quite a few different yachts, are set on at least visiting a 115 and would love to know a bit more about her. Based on the figures, I have the feeling whe might be a tad under-canvased. I was also wandering about her seakindliness and whether helming from inside is realistik when heeling: what is your experience? Thanks for the videos: just found your channel today, and immediately subscribed to it! Cheers, Alexis
If you're looking for a centre cockpit with option to helm inside then the Southerly 115 is a good candidate. Balancing sails to reduce weather helm is an art and varies from boat to boat - I have often locked the wheel with just enough weather helm to hold a good course with main reefed and full genoa. For a 37' yacht not designed for speed, she will get you through heavy seas and strong winds - however the compromise is in the swing keel which won't get you sailing as close to the breeze as a fixed fin keel. The later versions have twin rudders. Best thing to do is to get out there on one. Let me know if you're in the Med and you can come aboard for a ride! Stay safe JnS xx
Hello, and thank you for the great video. We are fellow Australian liveaboard sailors looking to apply for the French Long Stay Visa to sail France. Can you explain in more detail what you provided regarding the marina stay? Was it for the entire six months you booked one marina? Or did you book multiple marinas? Did you have to provide proof of payment? Regarding the boat is it the Registration papers and Insurance? Did all your documents have to be translated into French? (Sorry so many questions :)
Wow! Questions! Hi and thanks for asking - I think! Sorry for the late reply but we've been out of contact and away over Christmas and New Year with family. For the visa you must provide a full itinerary for your stay in France. We included various marinas and ports we wanted to visit and explained that the weather would alter the timings. So we didn't stay in the marina. Your best approach will be to register on the visa site and study the requirements - answer the questions keeping in mind that they want you to spend your money in their country. We didn't translate. Best of luck! Stay safe JnS xx

@@exploringeuropeafloat I hope this helps - here’s a link to their rate card www.ports-monaco.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/2024-Tarifs-Passage-Fontvieille-TTC.pdf
Hi - so sorry we haven't replied earlier - your comment didn't appear on our list for some unknown reason? Anyway to your question - we were pleasantly surprised by the fee - we expected it to be higher! It was less than 80 euros p/n for us - but the prices have risen so this year in the high season we would pay 82.5 euros. Check out this link: www.ports-monaco.com/en/the-ports-of-monaco/rates-of-the-ports-of-monaco/ Thanks for watching and commenting - we hope you stay with us!!
Now the previous reply has surfaced 😂 go figure! Anyway - hope we've helped.
This is probably going to sound ridiculous but what does the “LWD” stand for at the start of your episodes please
Haha - thanks for asking! Series 1 is the Long Way Down (LWD). Many sailors take the Canal du Midi from West Coast of France, or take the long way round Iberia via Straits of Gibraltar to the Med. We took the longest North to South inland waterway route from Dunkerque. Hope that answer lets you sleep tonight? 🤞👍 Thanks for watching. Stay safe JnS xx
Great video ... really good and very informative.. question , how did it take you to complete ?
Hi Raymond, thanks for your question and kind comment. One thing is certain - you can't rush canals! The other aspect is time available due to visas. Last thought is "how long have you got?" The journey can be done in three weeks at a push without closures, but we would recommend at least 6 - 8 weeks to take in the surroundings. Stay safe JnS xx

Looks great. Did you pre book the marinas or just radio them as you came into port?
Hi and thanks for watching and a good question. To select marinas and anchorages we refer to a combination of chart, Almanac and mostly an app called Navily. Many marinas can be booked on line using Navily, but otherwise we call or email to book ahead, where booking is necessary due to the size and number of transit berths. We don’t sail in the high season. Hope this is helpful. Stay safe JnS

I'm a beginner and like your videos very much. In August we (family) sailed on a hire boat for one week from Joigny to Châtel Censoir and back and it firstly worked remarkably well and secondly left us addicted to more. My question is, how does this work with the keel or sword with your sail boat? Can it be retracted so you can sail the shallow waters of the canals?
Hello and thanks for watching our video. Your family canal holiday on the River Yonne and Canal du Nivernais will have been magical - we loved it when we were there! Your guess about the keel is correct. Our boat is a 1994 Southerly 115 series 2, built for sailing the south and east coast of England for both Offshore and River Sailing. The keel is hydraulically operated to swing up into a grounding plate in the hull of the boat. Our draft can be just 80cm with the keel up. uk.boats.com/boats-for-sale/?make=southerly&model=115 I hope you do get to enjoy the rivers and canals of France more. Enjoy our other videos on the channel - please keep watching and commenting. Best wishes JnS.
Nice video, Jonathan 😊
Thank you!
Just subscribed. Excellent video. The only way I think you could improve on this is by adding moments of narrative describing your thoughts and feelings at the time of the passage. Alan on Sailing WaveRover has started doing this on his videos and it has taken them to anther level IMHO. Excellent choice of music tracks. 10/10
Thanks for watching this video and for your positive feedback. I admit to rushing this one through due to other imminent commitments and so the script was cut short to get this over the line. Many thanks for subscribing 👍 I hope our other creations entertain or inform suitably. Stay safe JnS
Great Video - ditch the music? 5 mins later I'm off (music!)
