Welcome to my page- I used to bike avidly as a teenager. I used the trails as a way to get outside and a way to get out of the house to find my own freedom and sense of independence. When I was younger I rode everyday- even on Christmas through the snowy trails and mud.
I went to University and joined the cycling club and quickly became an executive member, leading rides and teaching others as well as exploring new areas with established members.
I led a particularly popular night ride group on a weekly basis through the UBC endowment lands and saved some fireworks to set off on each ride. Sometimes I meet people even today who remember these events!
I had to stop riding for about a decade due to my career and in the end started biking again to keep up with my kid!
My main focus right now is still similar to the original mission at the UBC cycling club- to show people new trails so that people can see new locations and get a sense of the trails that are in this area.

First ride Transition SPIRE
No conclusions reached- just a quick lap- the first ride. Suspension is close to where it needs to be due to the set up guide from Transition and coil front fork is always right. Initial impressions are that it doesn't feel as sporty as the Altitude- but more testing is needed.

The new bike broke! Rocky Mountain Altitude C50

I think the rock strike on the fire road after CBC may be the culprit but that’s disappointing. You can hear it on cam- but it’s nothing too special or even strange- riding on rock roads will always create some rock strikes. 7:28 of the video. Warranty claim submitted on 2024-10-12. Warranty response received 2024-10-16- Rocky will warranty the frame- end of Nov is when it is expected to come i...

This was on review- the best settings and output I got after trying many settings. I am happy with the output given the lighting conditions and it represents a reasonable upgrade from my older GoPro and other cameras. Very strange in a way but 8bit, basically full auto everything, RS mode- sport.

Riding the new 2024 Altitude on Mt Fromme
Man. I'm glad i didnt buy this bike. I almost did. It also has a major design flaw in the pivot/bb. Check out Vitalmtb's video (santacruz mega tower vs rocky mountain altitude) Skip to 10:08. As for the damage that occured this isnt normal and frankly unacceptable. Ive had hard rock impacts on my carbon bikes and it would chip off a bit but never go through. Verry disapointed in rocky mountain right now.
Yeah I was … disappointed and frankly cannot recommend it. The pivot also loosened on me- was retightened and I didn’t have enough time on it to comment whether or not it stayed. It’s unfortunate- until this happened- I was loving it. I’m replacing it with an alloy bike.
Carbon is bad news. Always. It always fails catastrophically, which I see in fly rods. Steel, titanium and aluminium don't have the issue as they can take a hit and keep going. Learn the hard way......
Any update on your warranty? My new ‘24 Altitude just cracked in the same spot. Apparently the new ‘25 Altitude has enhanced protection around the BB area, so I wonder if this has been a common issue for them?
@@SteveCarmichael-sg1yg my understanding in talking with others- with cracks in the same spot is that this is common… the warranty frame is rumored to be a V2 version that is supposed to arrive end of the month I’m told. My warranty claim was approved.
Sorry about the damage to your sweet new bike. This is why I don't do carbon. You'd still be riding if it were metal. Also, it looks like you must have smashed a pretty large rock or something very hard. I don't know how bike companies can warranty when we cause the damage. I don't think your frame just came apart by itself?
No massive impact occurred… I mean the video is the video. There was a rock that tagged the frame on the fire road- but if an enduro bike can’t handle a fire road…. Agreed about the carbon bit- I’m replacing it with alloy.
id be terrified shipping a carbon bike lol
I have the 4 and was annoyed by the "fuzzing" or micro blur you are talking about too. It was happening in all lighting contitions, its not actually the stabalistion settings. I've worked out its the shutter speed. If you dont touch it it can go as low as 1/30, this prouces the most blur on hits. If you go into the settings, you can choose to limit the lowest value to 1/200, it gets rid of most of it. At 1/400, its gone completly, however the compramise is more noise in lower light. When i say lower, 1/400 is fine for most of the year, bar the darkest trails in the winter (im in Scotland!). i treid to do a vid explaining it back in april. Also, it was the noise filter causing weird glitches in foggy conditions for me. My main annoyance is how much youtube downgrades the footage!!
Excellent insight- I finally figure this out and have settled on min shutter of 1/200 which I find very acceptable! Thankyou for posting.
@@ChainBrothersMTB I realised after i posted you had a more recent video on it haha its a great camera, shame about youtube compression! I kept my hero 7 for years as i couldnt really see much difference on youtube, but its a huge step up when you watch the original files!
Janky!
how do even know if ur on the trail?
@@AntColonyOfficial it’s clearer in person for sure
bike 1000 miles as quick as possible

oof that's crazy, hope it was a faulty frame and not your responsibility. I was thinking of going for an altitude this year but I'm coming from a 2020 Instinct C70 which in the end dragged me to a santa cruz megatower because I want to see and feel how other brands ride
I can’t see this as a “crash” situation tbh- in my view this is completely a faulty frame. Hopefully the warranty will come through quickly! Edited my response**
@@ChainBrothersMTB I know because I watched the video and there was absolutely no crash, at least you have video proof of it. I pray for a quick replacement in your case. I don't think that RM changed anything about their frame manufacturer but when I noticed that my frame was "Made in Taiwan" my face went :( pretty quick four years ago. Yes I know that is not an indicator for cheap manufacturing but I had high hopes when I was introduced to RM back then
@@Rasakson ya I feel lucky that I was 1) running a camera and 2) that I have a completely unedited non stop version for them if required as the battery life in the OA5 is crazy.
Not @10:29? Or is that your cranks/pedals hitting the rock
Interesting- I hear the jangle of a touch down but there’s a bash guard on the bike and the bash would touch down first in that circumstance. I think it’s most likely the rock strike at 7:28 but- who knows I could be wrong too.
Bikes are so low now a days even with 29 wheels. All it takes is taking obstacles at a wrong angle. Just a possibility. Could be anywhere like you said
Steel is real!
So true. I’m disappointed but hopeful the warranty process will be quick…
I wouldn't really recommend limiting the iso on action cams when mountain biking in a forest. The when there is not enough light, the trade off is noise (or loss of detail because of the denoising) against motion blur. Motion blur is a big issue when using electronic stabilization which essentially just aligns the frames to reduce shaking. The movement of the frame is gone, but the motion blur remains, leading to what you called the stabilization going awry.
As a rule of thumb I always try to have my shutterspeed double of the fps, so 1/120 with 60fps. this eliminates the shocky footage and makes it flow a lot more. To be able to do so I pop a ND8 on there which makes it work in most conditions. In the forest it should be ok without if you feel like trying it out without buying ND's. Thanks for the review, you're right on with the pixels being pushed together making it hard to say what the actual megapixel quality is with camera's like this, same with phones and drones.
Ah ok- I will try that again at some point!
💪🚴♂️👍
If you're soliciting suggestions: I would try playing with the sharpness and noise reduction options in picture quality (I landed on both 0, but you might want to go into the negatives). Will reduce the "AI oversharpened" look a little bit.
I have spent a few hours today looking at similar lighting conditions on older videos and this current setting with everything on auto and 8bit color is much better- I didn’t know it would be when I shot it though!
Such a drool worthy bike. I wish I knew about that sale! Haha
Thanks mate! I was surprised to see the fire sale at the shop as well- worked out though!
I run a DVO onyx on my RS29 and I actually started it out at 170. Definitely way too much. I’ve been running it at 160 all season and it’s a really good set up. The odd time it does feel a bit like it wants to come up in steeper climbs but overall. Good travel choice. I do like the extra burliness in this frame. It does have a bit of dampening but overall the stiffness is great for the chunky trails that I choose to ride. Cheers
Hey. I know you noted you got an XL. How tall are you? Thanks.
6’2”- XL is perfect. Lots of standover so it’s mainly about what reach you want.
Nice
The sigh of relief at the end!
😂 😅
Great looking vid.. and great riding What camera setup are you using.. looks clean
Hey I’m running the Hero8 black on a chin mount. I think the current best cam this year is the DJI Osmo action 4. The key is the lower megapixel count- it is more light sensitive than the newer GoPros that IMO put too many megapixels on the sensor - which means they are all smaller and each less sensitive. Takes more light and will have less dynamic range. Add to that the demands of mtb… I sold my Hero 11 for this reason. So IMO - GoPro peaked at the Hero8… 24 megapixel + is for APSC sized sensors and above- which for different reasons wouldn’t be practical in an action cam application!
Give it a try on a hardtail for extra spice.....
RSD 291 Nescafe ruclips.net/video/1ExNKZzIHag/видео.html
East Coast USA here. I built a Middlechild Ti with a 140 front end (currently SS) and it is a blast on almost anything you shoot it down. Haven’t tried it with a 150, but also don’t have the need for that much travel generally. RSD makes some nice frames and if you have questions Alex is super responsive and helpful in the buying process.
Did you have to replace your helmet after this crash?
Yes replaced w TLD stage.
Nice 👍
Thanks ✌
RSD have this frame on sale in xl. Wondering if that would be too big. I typically run a large. Anyways great review. Am an hard tail party sub, but great to hear another opinion.
I might walk back my opinion on the 150-160mm fork. I think both are great with the 150 feeling more balanced and the 160 requiring a more weight forward stance which works well for steep trails. Anyway the frame has a lot of stand over clearance so it comes down to the reach measurement and whether that will work for you. This bike is easily the best hardtail I’ve ever ridden- so worth it over other models if it works for you.
@ChainBrothersMTB built my bike up SS totally overforked(fork was on sale) But yes, I love the bike, even with the 170 fork I have no problems climbing. I am thoroughly impressed. Alex did tell me to mullet, but I had already had a wheelset build up. But yeah love the bike

Extremely epic
Very epic
WOW what a trail you have there. Very nice one. Good video also thanks for sharing!!!
Reminds of the on-one hello dave. Thanks for the review.
I’ve always wanted to ride one of those- I think it’s probably sort of similar w the On One have a longer back end and I think it’s slacker as well.
Hey! I ride the shore alot too :) I got the same hazzard shock on my bike with a progressive spring. Iwas wondering does your shock make a whooshing sound when it returns from compression? I know fox and rochshoxs are silent and wondetrinf if something is wrong with mine.
There is some level of that type of sound but it isn’t noticeable when riding… I have it set so that it doesn’t rush through travel on fast or large hits w a normal spring as well…
I have a build question for you: would a 140 mm fork be OK with this frame or should a person use a 150 mm fork as spec'd from RSD?
I’m not sure but Alex on instagram or through the rsd website is very responsive. I think the bike is perfect with 150 and may walk back my comments about 160. At 150 it was perfectly balanced-
@@ChainBrothersMTB Thanks
Ik this is 2 years later but im looking at upgrading in the summer (nz rn so we in winter) and I am looking for a good enduro bike with shimano comps - I brought and own a specialized stumpjumper evo comp alloy and I was a little unaware of the difference between trail and enduro, and shimano and sram cause for what I'm getting into my bike isnt going to give me the best riding experience, its a longer trail bike with only 160mm fork and all sram comps so thank you for helping me finalize my decision because I am definitely going with a commencal. Cheers mate
I am still riding my meta with its shimano stuff- no issues.
@@ChainBrothersMTB hey man thanks for the quick reply, I didn't expect that also good to hear it's still working well
Are these the same trails that RUclipsr @VanCan features?
If you are referencing his hardtail video I think that was on Ladies Only on Fromme.
@@ChainBrothersMTB North shore still?
@@dozza7946 yes still on the shore
Nice work! Does anyone ever ride that trail clean?
Someone maybe- but not me ever!
when did u ride Pingu - notice some new features under construction on your vid
This is from last week- so pretty recent.
Nice bike 🤙🏼. Got the same!
Yeah I like it - going to keep it hopefully as long as possible!
Nice trails!! Looks nice and slick haha!
Not ideal conditions for sure- figured it would be dry when we went but… didn’t turn out that way.
let the mud fly lol
Super nice trails
I ordered a small obsidian frame earlier this year and finished the setup in March. I love mine. I'm on the East Coast in the states so this is perfect for my area. I have it setup w/ a 150mm Lyrik Ultimate (2022), Shimano and Raceface mix for the transmission, and Saint brakes with 203mm rotors. I'm also using a 35mm bar [my width 780mm] and Continental Xynotal front and Kryptotal rear both DH casing supersoft. I initially was running beater oem specialized wheels from 5 years ago, but now I'm about to finish installing the new wheelset I had made for this, DT Swiss FR 541 rims on Chris King centerlock hubs.
That sounds like a good set up. I am trialing the 160mm front - I’m uncertain if I like it better which I’m shocked about. I was so sure haha. More testing needed. Bike is perfect on pretty much everything so far out West here too. The coil front seems good though.
@@ChainBrothersMTB I told Alex in a message that this is the aggressive freeride hardtail I've wanted for 20 years. I hope you continue to enjoy yours, thank you for taking time to post this.
@@DoctorDefiler yeah agreed - I feel the same way. It’s such a nice bike- just does everything.
What front tire are you running that is not gripping well?
Conti Der Baron- it’s ok to be totally fair. About the same as a DHF.
For years I've ridden Assegi up front, but this year I'm giving Magic Mary a shot, hope it works out. Still a lot of snow where I live.
@@rickb.1656 if it doesn’t - consider conti Kryptotal front and rear or Michelin Wild Enduros.
Really cool video man. I love the look of all the woodwork and rock trail building on some of the BC trails. Cheers!
Much appreciated! Very lucky to have these trails nearby- whenever I have moved away in the past I have missed them.
Natural trails are more technical than trail parks. Good job mate!!
Thanks!!
keep it up
nice. i liked the commentary. i just put a hole into my DHR -- maybe time to try those kryptotals :) would love to see you get redemption on the gangler :P
Yeah they seem excellent- the wild enduro is also a gold standard tire.
What a beautiful part of the world! And no better way to explore it than on a mountain bike 👌🏻
Yes I agree!
