Alaska Cut the Cord
США
Добавлен 6 июл 2021
We are just a normal couple that got tired of life on the hamster wheel and decided that there was a lot more to life than work and paying bills. We choose beautiful Willow Alaska for our home base. From here we will be exploring this amazing state while doing the things we love and choosing to make ourselves better in the process. There are a lot of things we've always wanted to do and didn't want end life talking about the things we wish that we'd done, instead we'd choose "now" to do them. So, please follow along with our adventure in Alaska and see what our future holds in store for us. For tomorrow isn't promised, you only have today.

Beautiful sunset. Why is it that the sun sets so quickly? Nice boat, with a gentle rolling wave behind it, makes it very soothing.
👍👍
After the break in period, can this fire Winchester's Buckshot & Slug combo? Is the recoil that bad? I only use 2 3/4 ammo.
As the name says, it is a bridge construction so it is stable to carry some weight. As a shelter, it needs some extra stabilisation, maybe. Or you have to put some weight on top.
I agree. Some changes will be made for the next version.
@@alaskacutthecord769 The loaded boards with cutouts need to be prevented from falling off when lifted by wind. So, use a rope to tighten them together or us some nails, screws or Japanese style, hole and tap. Good luck.
Thank you for the tips.
Just curious , and perhaps another video of yours addresses this, but how do you wash clothes in winter with snow ice winds & the cold. Loving your videos!😊
Phyllis takes dirty clothes into her work to wash them.
@ thank you for answering! 😊
My favorite kind of terrain to navigate. Ive learned to read whats bottomless and what has some base for traction over the last 25 years so. While i do get stuck its not Often. Also running a Polaris big boss 6x6 800 on tires. Great Video!
I still have a lot to learn about riding on this. I did learn that speed and power mean nothing. 5 mph was just right so that I wouldn't dig it up and could keep moving forward.
I think the idea is far older than davinci the Chinese built the rainbow bridge with straight poles to construct an arch bridge i believe that is the oldest form of this construction
Possibly as I have not research it that far. Thank you.
I love it. I memorized the cut pattern immediately. And envisioned shorter rafters to reduce the scissoring pressure effect and create more of a rounded structure to shed water better
Yes you are completely correct and that is what will happen for the next version.
I've been curious to see how one of these would be assembled
Hahaha ok and I see it's a bastard to assemble
It shouldn't have been as bad as it was. The next one will be much improved.
I enjoyed the video, I didn't expect the ending. I'm glad it a small setback and there was minimal damage. I have to ask about the German Shepard Dogs. They are Beautiful! I kept looking at the dogs as I watched the video. What working line are they from? I would love to know. I know they aren't the show line. The show lines are ruining the German Shepard breed. Lots of the Breeds being ruined ....In My Opinion
Thank you for watching and I love that you enjoyed the doggos. Both purebred, no idea of the working lines. Apollo (the blonde one) was a rescue from a family that lived on a tiny lot. He's super high energy and they couldn't handle him. He's got all the room in the world to run up here and loves it. They are about seven years old and show no signs of typical shepard issues. May favorite dog was still my Doberman. But you want to talk about issues. They were his downfall. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
@@alaskacutthecord769 Thanks for your reply, That's great that they are in good health at 7, and still have so much energy. I had one as a foster and kept him. amazing dog. I'm wanting another one, I'd love a Doberman. I love watching them run. I winter camp, so I wouldn't want to have them in the temps at freezing or below for too long at a time. I subscribed. Stay Safe.
Mother nature had a grudge against you guys for some reason.
She's just getting used to us being in her area, we'll be friends yet I hope.
@alaskacutthecord769 I like the way you think 👍 Just remember, mother nature's maiden name was Karen 😁
Buy a real saw.. China junk 😅
Sorry the weather got you but the design did work. You are definitely in Alaska. I love your puppies - they are having such a good time! I have 2 Great Pyrenees myself.
Thanks for the comment. Great Pyrenees are great guard dogs!
Awesome proof of concept. I really like how, coming down, the arch remains stable.
Thank you. It works, just needs a little more work now.
Dogs. And chainsaws. Make me nervous for the dogs. 🐕 only takes a microsecond. For disaster.
Rest assure we are very cautious around the dogs it helps that the dogs really don't like the chainsaws and usually leave when they are started.
40k views in 4 days - Rock on Adam and Phyllis!
Thank you.
You are precious! Because you have tested the idea. I had same thought: to use Da Vinci bridge for garage tent or shelter. That should work eventually. I wish you luck, and wish you find what nuances provide it to be more stable.
Thank you for the kind words. I do believe that have have and idea that will not only stregthen the structure but will also add adjustability. Stay tuned
@alaskacutthecord769 great to hear that! Subscribed and I'll be following. And maybe I'll find some ideas from classic architects, I remember blog called Structural engineering or smth similar... That bridge should be considered as classics, so some guys should already figured out the way this reciprocal structure could survive quakes. Generally reciprocals considered as mega-strong structures
Great video A and P. Love it. Your neighbors are amazing lol.
Thanks guys. Yeah they're pretty good😜
You guys are crazy-in a good way. Sorry it didn’t work out, but I think it’s a great idea. Thanks for posting :-)
Thank you. We have a lot to learn but I appreciate the support!
I think your idea is good. I have only seen for bridge spans. Do wider with three spans. Shore up as you were saying, but do pole on pole instead of boards. I do long conical shelters and tipis just to deal with heavy deep snow. Shaking and the DeVinci idea may not work together.
Great ideas, thank you!
Physics and geometry! You guys are brilliant.
Thank you.
Only 16 minutes to build a shelter 😮
Closer to three weekends. But you probably wouldn't want to watch all of that.
Great idea, but dude, you have to do two things differently. Put fasteners like bolts in the places where the boards cross to keep them firmly together, and do adequate cross and side bracing as you build, so it’s braced all the time. But, I gotta say, I think there’s not enough slope to work in a heavy snow area like that.
We did install carriage bolts where the boards come together. You are completely right about the slope though.
Would NOT trust that as far as I could throw it!!!
Thank you
Just the structure i wana be under after foot of snowfall
Building starts at 8:30
WOW, I called that one absent the earthquake...nice firewood stack though...😅
Sadly you are correct.
I wouldn't want to be under that contraption in a large snowstorm...
Think I would've built an a frame, but I'm still very envious of what you two are doing
Thank you. It's been a lot of fun.
The dogs were having a blast!
They love it out there!
Self supporting is Nice, with Bolts is Better.
We shall get it right the next time. Lessons have been learned.
Do you have a link to the plans
Zero. I have a picture on my phone. That is what I worked from.
Those chinese knockoff Stihls are great. Got a couple to replace my old brand name ones, all the parts fit, they run awesome.
I am very impressed so far.
I’m here in the Philippine and can buy a 90cc Chinese Stihl for $200. Thinking I will buy four of them before I leave. Sell two and keep the other two. I bought a 55cc Makita here also for my farm and it was only $60. I think we have cut over 70 trees with it so far and it just keeps a cutting!
So why not do this work in one of your pole barns?
We don't have a pole barn.
Double the end roof boards. Install a center support pole under the middle. Screw the poles and end boards together. Your arch design is weak otherwise. Good luck. 😊
Thank you. We will add quite a bit of support the next time around.
he buildt it for army use becose if you take one pice out it kolapses...needs presure or weight from above ( army or something else) or it easy colapses
Adding some diagonal bracing as it is built would reinforce the end to end movement. Also, instead of notching the end wood, if you used brackets that were just a little shorter than 1/2 the height of the pinned log beams, then it would be much stronger to loads. Another suggestion is to pre-drill a hole where the end wood pieces cross and bolt through both pieces with some fender washers and maybe even a block of wood on each side to increase clamp force? All these would tie it together better and be far stronger then what fell to nature. Overall a nice quick build, but definitely not a semi-permanent structure, let alone permanent. Thanks for the ideas and mental exercise I got running the numbers on the architectural stability of this! 😊
Thank you for the both useful and helpful comments soon to be put to use.
@ you’re welcome! My dad and I really enjoyed watching this video as we are building a tornado shelter and will be making it a geodesic rectangle, about 10 x 20 in size. So this gave us some ideas for building it. I always like inventive projects as they give me ideas even if I won’t be making the same thing!
its da vinci bridge
I’d seen this design years ago but in scale. Popsicle sticks and skewers. You’re the first person I’ve seen build one. Respect that you showed the difficulty in initial erection. Bummer about the snow load results. Now we all know. I wonder if you could tie the two end uprights together and maybe improve its rigidity. Maybe put each upright a few inches into the ground too. How wide was it? End to end too? I hope you’ll continue to experiment with the technique. I liked the ability to disassemble these when I first saw the model. It reminded me of the Viking A-frame tents that have boards framing the bottom and how sturdy they are and break down for travel. I’m betting that bracing the end uprights together would lessen the chance of collapsing during erection. Good on ya for trying. Don’t give up on the possibilities. It’s a genius design imo. 👏👍🇺🇸
I agree! The disassembly aspect is a great feature. I didn't measure the width. Originally I'd planned it to be ten feet deep by ten feet wide. My calculations from the picture on my Iphone were totally incorrect thus the splayed final results. I'd say it ended up being almost 20 feet wide. Way off the mark. The next one won't be. Thanks to great comments like this we will rebuild and build it correctly this next time.
Wet snow and an earthquake will test your builds. Good job on giving that style of structure a go. Just throw up a log, centre supported a frame for now
It sure did.
Your front sight on Backwards
Great video.
Thank you. We shall rebuild.
Good vid interesting build little more support next time
Agreed. It needs a lot of re-thinking.
Aren't they here enough!!
Not sure I understand.
And the tarp roof can handle how much snowfall on it in that configuration ?? 😂😂😂😂
The tarp didn't fail, in this configuration.
@ how the heck was it supposed to shed snow with only longitudinal purlins creating valleys ??? I wrote that before I decided to watch the end !
No problem. I don't think it would've ever shed snow the way this was built. I don't have cad abilities or I would've drawn it up first and would've seen the glaring mistake I made on the length of the boards. The next one will be 1/2 as wide and we just may remove the tarp when gone for long periods of time.
I love your dogs.
Thank you!
Did y'all see the beautiful sky on Monday night 1.27. Beautiful.
Nope, I have a cold and was sleeping. My loss, darn it.
Hello. How fun. I recognize you from the Thrift Store. This is great. Especially thank you for the previous video about Toyo Stove.
Thank you so much? Did I just sell a Toyo to you?
Thank you for the video. Some sort of jack or gin pole would help setting up the frame. A gin pole would help moving logs too.
Thank you. You are correct on the pole. Going to need to figure that out for the log cabin build anyway!
@ there are reprints of 1800-1950 farm devices and websites. I like paper easier to take note and not electric dependent. Prayers for a successful adventure.
Sounds like I have some research to do!
Great idea, take a look at Japanese bridges. Next time it will stand and stay. I'll be watching.
Thank you and I will do just that.
