Hey, Bob, amazing videos! Your quality of videos is insanely good! I wanted to ask if you'd ever consider analyzing various techniques/vocals, do the breakdowns and give people some roadmaps on how they can achieve similar effects/emotions/sounds? If so, I'd Love love love to hear "twenty one pilots - the line" song breakdown as it is super, super vulnerable, and the way it is sung is really beautiful, especially the live version
I'm impressed by your videos, especially the part at 5:19! 😄 We felt the signs, but just ignored it to sing One last time! I really enjoy your videos while my cords are swelling.
Thanks😁
Can you please make a vedio on singing in a perfect pitch and adding emotion to it
I'll add them to my list of video ideas ;)
You are a pure genius man
Haha thanks Wandy! Glad you liked the video :)
could you explain Lose Comtrol buy Teddy Swims?🥰
You mean the riffs? Or the whole song?
I am in love with your voice man❤
Haha thanks :) Hope my stuff works for your too though! 😁
you are amazing, I'm moved.
You're very welcome :)
Dude this is the best guide to singing I've seen so far. Straight to the point no bull-crap definitions and opinions. The perfect amount of complexity. Thank you! Seriously! I'm looking forward to seeing your other videos, but i have to be alone hahah
Thanks a lot! And yes, good to be alone to experiment freely :p
Wowww. Great video.. I just subscribe to your channel
♥️
Does it matter what kind of voice I have or can this be used in any kind of voice? Also I don’t know if the highest note I can reach is actually the highest note I can reach. I don’t know if I can go higher
The techniques work on every type of voice :) And about your highest note: you can probably train yourself to go higher, but I can't really say anything definitive about that without hearing you sing.
@ Ok thank you so much 👍
Thanks!
Thanks a lot Anthony!
Thanks!
You're very welcome Anthony. And thank you :)
BINGO‼️🎤
😁
💯💯💯 I started singing late in life at 56 years old and I figured what better way to learn to sing than to do rough sing-a-longs recorded on my iPhone 📲 where I can get instant feedback on replay on how I’m matching up with Artist while learning song at same time - I try to capture as much of the flavor of the original song as I’m covering them as a challenge to grow as a versatile singer…
Sounds great!
"To stay in mode B and C above our break pitch, we need to limit our airflow." WHAT THE HECKING HECK THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING WHERE WERE YOU IN MY LIFE WHY DIDN'T I KNOW THIS BEFORE MY LIFE CHANGES NOW CAUSE I NOW KNOW EVERYTHING AND THERE IS NOTHING STOPPING ME-
Haha let's go!
17:55 this really freaking made me laugh, I've been struggling with a kind of lite-depression due to singing, to me, singing well is the coolest thing period. I've been fighting the impostor syndrome saying it's too late and that no matter what I'll suck even though I'm 17 and I *know* it's obviously not too late. Sorry for the venting, but this video is an absolute diamond.
Thanks for this, I appreciate it :) It's never too late, but definitely not when you're 17. If singing really is your coolest thing, you might be interested to read Talent Is Overrated. It'll help with the struggle, and put it in perspective. And if you want to, you can use the message to become amazing.
Is mode C very available to those going though voice changes? I feel like I can’t reach higher notes without straining but i feel like i have the problem of too LITTLE breath but can’t figure out how to balance it. I’m a senior in highschool so i’m wondering if it’s just my voice going through development.
In general, yes, all parts of the voice are available (there might be exceptions). The big but: your voice changes faster than your body has time to adapt. Normally singing Mode C in the high range of your voice is already tricky, it requires very precise control, and knowledge of your own voice. But while going through the change, because it changes all the time, this is even harder. Not impossible :D 3 things: 1. Maybe my breath support video will help you with this 2. Trust your feelings and don't damage/force anything (I also have a video on this) 3. Getting more practice in, means you'll get used to your new voice/vocal folds faster. Hope that helps :)
this video is soo complete omg
Haha I tried. You're welcome :)
It's rare to find a vocal coach that can actually sing. Impressive. I'll be checking you out to find any gaps in my game, tia mate
Thanks :)
Thank you so much, I learned a lot of things and you helped me fixed my problem in singing recently you are a great teacher sir bob and the level of your understanding about the voice is really amazing. I wish you a great success in your vocal coaching also happy new year! :DD
Thanks a lot! And an amazing 2025 to you as well!
Wait, my singing teacher told me to take in the biggest breath every time. Does this mean it was bs? 🤔Seems like it would waste a ton of energy to be constantly holding in so much air.
I don't know the context, but if he/she really said "EVERY" time, yes, I'd say that's probably bs, and a waste of energy. But if you're in doubt: experiment. See what works for you. You can also ask him/her to watch this video and react to it. Not as an attack, but just out of curiosity. Might be really interesting :)
@@bob.smeenk Been trying it with tiny breaths and I think it's helping!
@@RutabegaFarmer Great!

What an amazing video!!
Glad you liked it!
I've hit a slump on my singing recently as I've always found it hard to utilize my mix. This video was a godsend. Also that "leaning back" to modulate air flow was GENIUS.
Haha great! So happy to hear this :)
I am not s singer but i want to sing i am Sreaching on RUclips whole day but i can't find anything were i can start can u give me some advice 😢
Just sing :) Copy singers you like. When you encounter a problem, search RUclips for a specific fix. Fix it and continue. Hope that helps :)
@@bob.smeenk thks 🙂 I will definitely try this
I am preparing for my kpop singing audition that's I want to improve my voice like when I am singing🎤 it's sound good👍
Bob, this video is amazing! I appreciate the new framing. At 21:34 you say that we need the least airflow with high powerful notes, which sounds counterintuitive to me because I assume (maybe wrongly) that we need the most pressure to sing those notes. Can you explain a bit more?
Yep you're right. And because it sounds so counterintuitive the message is so important. In general we the PTP (or minimal pressure) for high powerful notes is higher. So when singing them you will experience a bit more pressure/compression. But. The (average) gap through which the airflow passes, between our vocal folds, is also smaller. If the gap becomes smaller, and the airflow stays the same, the pressure goes up. (Like when narrowing the pipe of a garden hose.) Does that answer your question?
You are good teacher
Thanks 😁
You should check out the IPA vowel chart. It's all the possible vowel sounds your mouth can make, and a standardized symbol to go with it. That way you can communicate the /exact/ sounds that are easiest and harder to sing with.
Thanks! I know the chart. I considered using it, but decided not to. Too much information, as most people just need a few of those vowels for their language. And every dialect/person is a bit different and experiences different things. That's why the many vocal methods which do prescribe exact vowels never seem to agree (completely). I chose to let singers find their own perfect vowels with the ABC Voice model. It might slow you down a little at the start, but in the end I think it will make vowel modification more intuitive and useful.
As a visual learner, this amazingly helps. This channel is underrated!
Thanks! And you're very welcome :)
i want to learn from you
Great! Have a look at the links in the description to see how I can help :)
This is fantastic! I'm so glad I found your video! All my life I thought that I just had a voice that is breaking and I had to be careful and control it. I thought that was my limitation. And it turns out that there is knowledge and explanation on this subject! it's uplifting and motivating to work on developing your capabilities!
Great! Enjoy! :D
Bro, my neighbours are in for a ride since i discovered your channel lmao 😂
Bob Smeenk, making neighbours all around the world slightly grumpier than they already were :D
If you were to start singing from scratch, what would you do or learn to become a better singer?
Great question. 1. Pick a method and study/follow it (for a while). Like my ABC Voice Model. Or EVT, CVT, SLS, etc. Some system that will help you know what's possible with a voice and help you do it. 2. Breath support. Without breath support, no talking/singing. Many vocal problems stem from incorrect or insufficient breath support. (See my breath support video) 3. Deliberate practice: this might be the only thing that masters in any skill (sports, arts, academics, etc) have in common. I think it's the fastest and most rewarding way to learn any skill.
GOATed video really
Thanks😁
Where do the lower abdominals come into play for breath support? I’ve learned they are an anchor and should be hugging inwards subtly. Is it different than the upper abdominals/solar plexus/ribs are? Or do they follow in tandem - when controlling those other areas on exhale?
My view: they should be moving inwards slowly while singing. Never locked. While especially the ribs, should stay wide for as long as possible. But many singers/coaches say and experience different things. So experiment. Use what works for you. When do you experience most control and least strain? Use that. Does that answer your question?
@ perfect! So I’ll coordinate them with my upper abs as they slowly move in while exhaling. I was trying to flex them a bit or tug them maybe but I’ll avoid that and see what happens.
👌😁
I believe this may be the Rosetta stone/Holy Grail/Roadmap in a dark and confusing landscape of vocal coaching practices for the advancement and breakthrough needed in achieving vocal mastery.
That's quite a compliment, thank you and enjoy :)
Question: in the Prince* track Adore, is Prince using a to-the-and-slightly-past Mode C as described here in some parts of the vocals? Would it be correct to say that Prince is using Mode A with true falsetto and Mode C interchangeably throughout the song? Please elaborate if you have a chance. Thanks!!
I had quick listen. Most of it is Mode A and Falsetto. Sometimes a bit of B or C. Prince is an interesting case, as he uses all of the Modes regularly, and then he also plays with his sound colour a lot. I might make a video about his vocal use in the future.
Sir what do you mean by natural pauses: 1) where you need to breathe or 2) Octave/pitch jumps drops or 3) Feeling/mood of internal riff changes ?
Most long riffs consist of multiple small "parts/blocks". Some fast notes, a little pause, more fast notes. Often when the riff has a large jump, or changes direction going downwards to upwards or vice versa. Does that answer your question?
Wow… this just helped me solve my problem. Lack of mindful breath management. Not just anxiously over tanking on air. Everything suddenly got easier
Great!
so I have a question on vocal ranges my base is a2 but if I try but I strain I can whistle note at a7 whistle note that would put me in the 6 octave range but my range is very patchy sometimes I can reach c5 belt chest to head at a highest of f5 before air so my question here is what am I in terms of voice type am I and like how do I navigate this lol you have been a big help and do you offer 1 to 1 online class I would love to buy lol.
Thanks Lorenzo! That's amazing range. Reding this, I suspect you're a tenor. But voice type is not just about which notes you can hit. It's about in which range you feel most comfortable. If you google "voice types range" you'll get an overview and can determine which of these labels might suit you best. I can also help you with this in a private session. If you'd like a 1:1 coaching session have a look at www.bobsmeenk.com/vocal-coach Talk soon!
Some ‘follow along with you’ exercise videos would be great!
Thanks, I'll consider it :) You mean specifically for riffs? Or in general?
@nobleg ❤❤
nobleg?
The Animation made it easy to follow !
😁
Didn't realize this was a new channel because of the quality of the videos and overall presentation of the channel. The color scheme and thumbnails look good, and the best advice I've heard so far
Thank you and you're very welcome :)
As per your recommendation, I'm watching this video. This is some genuine feedback- your video style is awesome! It feels like you're putting more effort in than most people who put videos out in the vocal-teaching space. Clean background, some additional eddits/scenes/additional audios, materials on the screen in relation to the topic at hand. This is refreshing to see and way more engaging. This just shows that good content (in terms of the subject- how it's explained and presented) as well as post-production/editing part can make the video quality even better.
Thank you, that means a lot :)
Love the way you decode the tough singing challenges...very subtle graphics and not much of visual clutter which keep the focus on the content...and absolutely perfect timing to end the video...loved it❤
Thanks a lot, I try :)
Bob Smeenk! Oh my god. Your vocals right before the 1ist minute when you sing in a chesty voice as some people call it... WOW. How do you maintain this clean quality? Just adding volume to the vocals at higher ranges does not necessarily translate to this kind of tone, clarity and consistency in the sound. JUST WOW. Just from the first minute I've realized that you are someone whom I'd want to learn from as much as possible.
Haha thanks! I think most of it is breath control. If you haven't watched my breath support video yet, I think you'll enjoy that one too :)
Can I just please pay for personal coaching
Haha of course! Have a look at www.bobsmeenk.com/vocal-coach Talk soon!
that H thing is an absolute game changer when you started playing those gospel riffs I could hear every singleH consonant between each note. Seems like the real secret is singing the note in straight tone then taking your vocal stop it and cutting it up with the individual H consonants. Thanks so much for that nugget. I’m sure that the RIFF” gatekeepers” didn’t want that secret to get out lol
Haha yep that h was my big unlock for finally getting my riffs to sound better
EVERY KID DOES THIS
Yep! It's how they learn to speak. Adults sometimes forget their superpowers :)
