Ancient Music Genres Explained is a clip for curious harpists who would like to hear the 3 Ancient Tunings of the Lyre, the forerunner of the harp. These tunings are not used in modern music nor are they shown in schools. Ancient Tunings survive today in Byzantine Music> Greek Orthodox Church Music and in Ottoman Makam Music built on the bases of Byzantine Music[Bourgault Ducoudray Thesis]. Below more is said for the benefit of Modern Harpists who play an instrument that can be tuned to the Ancient Tunings first developed on the Ancient Lyre that was the instrument chosen to learn musical theory in Ancient Times[pre Christian].
Great Video! What type & brand of microphone is used to record harps? Many thanks for the detailed list of factors to be considered for a correct posture and physical condition necessary for playing the harp!
Hello Hannah! Do you have sheet music for the song? It is so beautiful! You are very talented!
this is so beautiful! My fiance and I want to have this played at our wedding. Would you be able to share the sheet music? We have tried searching for it but cannot find it online
We had this specially commissioned as there is no sheet music for this available.
Can we buy it off of you?
Wow!!! Thank you for such a cool tip about hand position that it’s the way I play the piano. I couldn’t understand how to play but now it all makes sense.
She is a doll.
This goes to show why harp amplification can be really helpful. Not to turn it into an electric harp like the Salvi Delta (although that harp is really awesome!), but just to even out the volume when you're playing with other instruments. You played this song beautifully and this is not at all a critique on your skills. You're an excellent harpist. I just ordered a harp with a pickup installed for this very reason. The harp is so easily drowned out although it can seem quite loud on its own. Funny enough, Scarborough Fair is the song I am currently working on. It has a lovely and haunting quality to it.
Thanks for listening! Yes, you are right. Many times the harp could benefit from amplification. I do believe also that recordings like this can not transfer what the live concert "balance" was. That is great! I have a pick up mic as well. It has been very helpful at times.
@@hannahwhite5094 You're very right about live performances not translating as well. I'm sure in person it was much more balanced. I would have loved to have seen it!
Are you still playing? I love the way you teach!
I am! Uploaded a few new videos today. Thanks for watching!
Been playing awhile but this is really good! Love the "follow through" explanation using the batter's swing
Sounds like an angel as well playing gods instrument the Harp. So enchanted. Like when you imagine unicorns are real.
You are amazing! Thank you so much!
Lovely teaching style Hannah!!
Great! Very clear and easy to follow
Why did this individual stop playing on you tube? She is very good -
It’s really helpful!! Thank you so much! Thank you for sharing your knowlege of this incredible instrument. I really appreciate it! ♥️
I just started playing again for the first time in years, and ran into some serious right under arm tension. This video is the best I’ve seen so far and was very helpful. Thank you so much!
I would love to be able to connect through Skype
Hey there! Are you taking lessons privately still?
@@hannahwhite5094 I took a large chunk of time off due to COVID-19 and helping my parents with work on our new property and homes
I plan to start back once we are settled in to the smaller of the two houses.
@@adrienneverret4746 have fun moving to your new place! Oh yes I think a lot of students had to take time off during COVID
@@adrienneverret4746 I didn't get your Facebook message :(
YAY!!!! I finally found your RUclips tutorials
Thank you for this wonderful video !! I found this very useful for keeping my finger position in check and understanding how I can pluck better on my lyre.
I have long noticed that harp glissandos were used quite often in the 70s in a lot of pop and tv/ movie music. lol. That’s where i came to know them from.
Excellent
Da girl: Blah blah blah blah Me!PLAY IT ALREADY!!!!!
Loved the very detailed explanation. Thank you!
Thank you, Hannah!
Helpful and thorough advice. Thank you!
I'm wondering how you know where to stop the gliss. It sounded almost as if you used your thumb to pluck that last note. Am I right?
Yes! At the top of the gliss, the thumb is plucking. Also, as for where to stop the gliss, typically that is notated in the music. A gliss generally has a starting and stopping note written in the gliss.
It never hurts to go over the basics. The best way I can think of it is like your fingers are spring-loaded. They would just naturally snap back towards the palm.
I'm trying to get some ideas on writing for harp- these vids are very useful, thanks. One question: When you said you were playing a C, isn't that a half step below C? (B or Cb?) It sounds like a B to me. Do you have a pedal lowering the pitch?
I don't recall, but I may have had the harp pedals all in the flat position, so it may be I was plucking the C string, but the sound was Cb / B.
@@hannahwhite5094 Thank you for your reply! That was bugging me- lol. May I ask why you stopped making videos?
Oh, if you don't mind my asking, I was wondering- I was writing a passage for harp just this evening, and I was wondering if I have an ascending arpeggio where it's crossing between bass and treble clef, but just going straight up, should I do stems up and stems down for left and right hand, or just notate it like piano and let harpist figure it out? I saw in one article I found online where they recommended putting stems up for left and down for right, but I BELIEVE they were just talking about if the LH and RH are playing the same notes, like say Middle C, E, G (played by LH) Middle C, E, G again (this time played by RH.)
@@composerdoh to answer your question, assuming that these are arpeggios are taking place all in the treble clef. Left hand arpeggio stem should be down and the right hand arpeggios should be up. If these are divided between bass and treble clef, then the regular stem rules would apply. Hope that was helpful
@@composerdoh life and music focus change. I am hoping to upload some new repertoire solos to this channel in the near future!
i need a girl who take care about me just like you do with your hands
Excellent instruction, audio, and video. Also, clear speech with a voice that might be great for singing.
Why are female harp players sooooooo beautiful???
Thank you for your lesson and time 🙏🏻😇😍
Hi! Thank you for the clear and interesting presentation :). I would like to ask a question. I am about to start harp lessons and have a piano background. I find it easy to stay relaxed on the piano because the movement goes up and down, but I'm not so sure about the harp. I am afraid I'll develop tension. What might be the first signs of tension to watch out for? And don't your arms tired of staying up constantly? Thank you!
Thank you for your comment! As for fatigue, you will slowly build up muscle stamina, and eventually be able to play for longer periods without fatigue. Yes, it can be easy to build up tension while playing if you're not careful and aware. Watch for stuff hands, pain, and discomfort ( fatigue is different than pain ) when working on a relaxed hand position. Best wishes in your harp playing!
Thank you, I like it that you work with pictures and training natural motions and found it interesting about the energy, maybe you can write my please again and explanation about it? 😘

Do you happen to have a salvi daphne 47 natural? That’s what I have and your harp looks almost the same. Great video!
No, it's actually a Lyon and Healy 17.
This is super! I really appreciate your points and advice. Thanks for grouping all the thoughts in one place!
Thanks! Glad to hear it was helpful.
Do you have a pickup, or pickups (amplification) on that thing? Also I have an instrumental hit for you that is made to order for your instrument. It's hard to believe nobody notices this fact besides me. ruclips.net/video/CxGhQKX5VJw/видео.html
