Put a grip for R8 with 2 batteries in and be happy. 😊
Absolutely!! It is a fantastic camera, with a battery grip you should be able to shoot all day without any issue.
Dami x camera
Very informative review - thank you so much! There was so much criticism about this lens from German youtubers, concerning the high degree of distorion of this lens. But as I can see on your images it is well corrected - nothing to worry about in most situations. So your review confirms my decision to go for this lens, which is very versatile.
Thanks for watching! It is without a doubt the sharpest 35mm f/1.4 lens I have used from any company. It has a great size and weight to it and feels very balanced on the camera, I think you are going to really enjoy it!
Nice review. Great images. Well put together.
Thank you for that!! It has been my favorite lens to shoot with this year, the image you get from it at f/1.4 just puts a smile on your face!
Did you use the caps to cover motors for these videos? Excellent work😅
Appreciate that!! No motor caps, I have heard those do more harm than good. For the most part brushless motors are pretty weather resistant, the bigger issue would be water getting into the main body and affecting the flight controller. Luckily the rotor wash kept the drone body clear or any snow!
@@JasonPischke Thank you for the info...love what you done and info bout it...Rube
Thank you! learned a lot from this video
That’s awesome to hear!! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!!
Are we calling 1600 EUR / USD cameras "budget" these days? Our language is slipping ... And Marketeers are having a field day ...
“Budget” is a relative term. In this video I am talking specifically about the full frame camera market where camera bodies can cost as much as $6,500, so in that context these would be considered budget. There are certainly more affordable options in the APS-C and M43 markets, but this video was aimed at those wanting a full frame camera.
@JasonPischke You can invent your own and any language. But in NO language there is something as a "budget" Rolls Royce, a "budget" Ferrari or a "budget" Hasselblad. Nor is the R8 a budget camera. Not in it specs, not in it s functionality nor in its price. It might be the "most bang for your buck" model, but its by no means "budget". As in cheap, limited functionality or low construct.
thank you. first time user and your video made it easy.
Love to hear that!!
Hey, great review and great video! Had a quick question for you. For a photographer aiming for professional level, shooting mostly landscape and portrait, and who wishes to start getting into a bit of wildlife slowly but surely, which one would you recommend between the two and why?
Appreciate that! It’s a bit if a mixed bag, for landscape work having the additional 4 megapixels of the R8 would be nice, also the updated DPAF II system is going to be slightly better for portraits work and wildlife. The biggest drawback for me is the ergonomics and battery life, it’s not the end of the world, but having used an R6 I think it feels much better to use and having 2 card slots, bigger battery, better EVF and ergonomics makes it a great all around package. I would see which one you can get the best deal on. Canon has been discounting the R8 very frequently and the R6 prices just keep dropping so I would find the best deal. Both are more than capable of doing professional work. Hope that helps!
@ thank you so much!
Very helpful
Glad to hear that!! Thank you for watching!
very helpful video, as a very noob drone pilot I need to know everything about it before even trying to fly this thing as great as it can be, so again thank you for sharing your wisdom.
That’s awesome to hear!! When I first started I had one week to learn before I needed to fly for a job haha, it was hectic but it was videos like this that helped so much! All the best on learning and flying!
Mitten im Wald Feuer machen, hier in Deutschland unvorstellbar...
Really? That’s interesting, it’s a fairly common thing here in the states. I always keep a water bucket nearby just in case and you can get in a lot of trouble if you leave a fire unattended, but if you are smart about it, it’s not really a problem!
Thank you. was a great help
Always great to hear!! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!
Are they good for music/vocal
They are, the Sennheiser specifically has a high SPL handling so it can be used with strings, woodwinds, percussions, etc without distorting and also has a very wide frequency response for vocals and other instruments.
Thank you so much for this, information I needed 🙏
That’s awesome to hear! Thank you for watching!!
I also use small diaphragm mics as well over shotguns!
Any particular one you like?!
which lenses would you suggest for this camera for city photography?
For this review I shot primarily with the RF 24-50mm, a pretty good lens given the $299 price but it does feel kind of cheap and plasticy in the hand. The 28mm f/2.8 pancake is a fun city lens but you are going to be limited to that 28mm focal length. You can’t go wrong with a 24-105mm if you want versatility. I have shot a lot downtown with that lens and it gives you a ton of range. If you have a little more budget I would highly recommend checking out the RF 28-70 f/2.8. For $1,100 it is a lot of lens!
i also switched to a small diaphragm condenser mic a few months ago , from a shotgun MKE600h to an SE SE8 , I was getting the sorts of issues you described and occasional weird phasey/verb issues as well as directional problems it would also be my style of mic/recommendation if people are looking for a small overhead mic for youtube/indoor style stuff
The SE8 is another great option in the $200-$300 price range. RUclips videos is going to be the primary use of this mic for myself, I feel like with most people filming in spare rooms or smaller spaces, having a mic that isn’t going to pick up all of that reflected sounds is huge!
@@JasonPischke absolutely, i think it's one of the things were if you have the tools to do post production you can deal with it, (whether or not it really puts you off or not is another matter 😄but dealing with things at the source is always ideal kudos on the lighting/video quality otherwise, looks and sounds incredible 🙌
@@paulbradshawguitar Appreciate that! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!!
Clear concise descriptions and analysis. I had used an NTG2 but, for the reasons you describe, a few years back I switched to dual NT5s into a MixPre 3 II for two person interviews.
Appreciate that!! Went back and forth between the e614 and the NT5 back for a while before settling on the Sennheiser. I do like that Rode sells a matched pair for the NT5 ensuring both mic’s sound the same. Great to hear you have been enjoying them!
This is the best review I've heard in a long time.... Man, you are genuine and speak from a lot of experience.... Amazing.... Keep up the good work....👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤩
That means a lot!! I put a lot of work into these reviews so it’s always great to hear that people are enjoying them!! Thank you!!
EXTREMELY HELPFUL. Thanks mate!
That is awesome to hear!! Thank you for watching!!
Thank you.
Glad you found it useful! Thanks for watching!!
They had to leave something out or why would you have a reason to buy the 1.2. Stabilization on the way for $3000.
I 100% could see that haha. I’m interested to see the 3 new upcoming hybrid lenses to be released October 30th. Looks to be a 24mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.4 and 70-200mm f/2.8 with internal zoom.
Watching from Iligan City
No way!! Very cool, I have never been to the Philippines but would love to visit someday. I have heard the humidity can be pretty tough on gear out there.
Thanks for sharing sir
Hi sir please gift DJI se2 help me 😢😢😢 i from India
Not sure the market in India, but there are so many good deals to be found on the second hand market. I would go that route!
Great video Jason, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed! Thank you for watching!!
thanks dude
Appreciate it!! Thanks for watching man!
I love your videos. I have the same Canon R6 and RF35mm F1.8, but I am not able to get the same dynamic range as your video. Could you make a video to show how your camera setting and color grading for videos? Thank you very much.
Absolutely, I don’t think I have ever put together a full, shoot to edit to color grade video, thanks for that!!
Amazing video !
Appreciate that!! Thank you for watching!
If shooting r5 like i got dont need to worry about stabilizing from the lens or still missing a coupke extra stops?
You are going to be missing a few stops worth of shake reduction. With a lens without IS you are going to get about 5 stops of shake reduction compared to the 8 stops you usually get if the lens had IS. I found the camera only IBIS to be pretty good, you can handhold shot without much trouble, it also helps that it is a 35mm so it’s a little wider helping to not show the shake as much as something like an 85mm.
I want an R8 but am waiting for the holiday sales in hopes of saving a bit. Great video! The quality is very apparent!
Appreciate that!! Canon is pretty good about discounting their lenses and camera bodies around the holidays, even full price it’s one heck of a deal but I don’t blame you for waiting!
Great vid thanks!
Thanks for watching!!
If you only care about image quality when using a lens with anti-shake, is r8 or r6 better?
Image quality is almost identical between the two. I lean more toward the R6 because of the IBIS. You never know what lens you might find yourself using in the future, I was just reviewing the new RF 35mm f/1.4 L which didn’t have any stabilization but with the R6 it was still very usable handheld. Most lenses do have IS, but that’s just a case I recently ran into which you might want to consider.
Which iso is base iso on r8? Is it also same as r6ii?
Same as all of Canon’s other camera’s. Base ISO of 100 for photos or Rec.709 video. Base ISO of 800 for CLog 3.
It's decent, I shoot it on my R5C. I hav wea video posted on my channel that I shot this lens with. Check it out to see what its capable of in low light. Cheers.
Your footage from it looked great, awesome location too! There isn’t a ton of footage from this lens yet so it’s nice to see what others are making with it, thank you!
Can you guide me on how to change the aperture from f1.7 to other settings like f4.5 or 5.6?
The pro 4 is set to 1.7
Unfortunately the Mini 4 Pro does not have an adjustable aperture, only the more expensive Mavic Pro line of drone’s have that feature.
I am still waiting for 35 mm f/1.2
That would be a dream lens!! I haven’t heard much about an f/1.2 being developed, but would love to see one!
Здравия!!! Как это верно! Я скромный любитель, но хочу видеть 1.2 его на свой камере! Очень уж сильно:)! Спасибо за прекрасные и Добрые кадры!!! Всего самого солнечного!!!@@JasonPischke
I LOVE the footage you shot!!!! Although I have no plans to purchase the 35mm f1.4, thank you for creating this video
Haha thank you!! It’s a great lens, but $1,500 is a lot for a prime.
best video explaining it
Thank you!! Glad you found it helpful
Awesome video! Thought about getting this, but ended up going with a Sigma 35mm 1.4 on my R5ii. I like the metal build of the Sigma a bit more over this one. I like the aperture ring, but it doesn't feel too necessary considering I have step up rings and variable NDs that I use on my bigger lenses. Definitely an interesting lens, but I feel like Canon almost "jumped the gun" with this one and gave us an incomplete product. They'll probably fix all of the little issues with a Mark II sometime down the line though and that MIGHT get me to jump to that lens.
That’s a good way to sum it up. It is the first in what Canon has said is going to be a new series of lenses so let’s hope Canon is taking the feedback seriously when developing the rest of the lineup. I’m glad to see them trying new things, but the Sigma is certainly still a great alternative. Hope you have been enjoying the R5 Mark II, have yet to see or use one but it looks like a great evolution of the R5.
Quick note, setting the optimal function, the drone doesn't rise to your specified height etc, it makes its own mind as to the best and shortest way home. Pre-set is the function you were mentioning.
Good catch!! I still like to have the height preset, but yes, optimal doesn’t use it. Thank you for the correction!
Thanks you for the review! Great video and so niiice footage 😍
Appreciate that!! I have been so excited to review this lens, did not disappoint! So glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Where do you edit your photos? Do you apply lens correction on import for every picture?
I use Lightroom Classic to edit and manage my photos, and yes, I have it set to automatically apply lens profile corrections upon import.
really helpful, thank you!
Glad to hear that!! Thank you for watching!
Hey great breakdown, really appreciate the side to side comparison in different settings. Been watching a lot of theses comparisons and this is exactly the one I was looking for.
When I was looking to buy one, I couldn’t really find a good video showing how they compare to a soft box so I’m glad to hear you found it helpful!! Than you for watching!

Awesome video. Very informative. The images of Pittsburgh are simply amazing!
Appreciate that!! It’s one of those things where I see Pittsburgh so much, I don’t really go and shoot photos downtown all that much anymore. It was nice to run around with the R8 testing it out and enjoying the city for an evening!
Great video Jason! Can I asked what light you are using in combination with the lantern modifier?
Appreciate you watching! The light is a GVM LS-p80S I bought way back in 2019. Because it has an all plastic housing and locking mechanism, it doesn’t love the weight of the lantern but does hold it. Most modern lights sold these days should hold it just fine!
