This episode was a great commentary on the over-romanticisation of the 1970s and other late postwar eras. Like taxidermy, nostalgia has all of the celebrated era's uncomfortable truths, social mechanics or guts if you will, removed and what is left is just an abstraction of that era. The 1970s in the UK at least, is often spun by many as the final chapter of the nuclear family, consensus politics and social certainties as if these were unceasingly virtuous and superior to what we have now with everyone living in cosy carpeted living rooms in a permanent sitcom surrounded by tinsel, flares, platforms and the waft of the chip pan on a Friday night coming from the kitchen all seasoned by the salt of the earth with "common sense". As someone who remembers the era like Reece and Steve I guess, there was a lot of ghastly shite too including children often being perilously voiceless like Ronnie and completely subsumed by the abuse of shady adults. Some might say these days that they do not recognise the country now when viewing old commercials etc. Athough thankfully my own 70s early childhood was a happy one, I do recognise the world in this episode and I don't want it back. -AZ.

I was so unprepared for this episode as I was on holiday in Yorkshire when this episode aired and my god it was so good and so gripping! When Dr Death showed up and Jason (Pemberton) started freaking out, I saw the brief flash of him in a coma I had to do a double take and thought "what was that?!" And when the twist was revealed he was in said coma I went "OH SH*T JASON'S IN AN EFFING COMA!!" I didn't want Jason's doctors take him off life support and put him to sleep, Jason seemed to be a caring dad who loves his wife and daughters. I was screaming and freaking out for Jason to wake up. I then remembered that he had that last hint and it being the I and X in EXIT being the Roman numerals for 9 was a great use of the 9 in the show. As that revelation hit Jason, his wife, daughters and the audience. When Lynne, Jason's wife, exclaimed "wait!" And the doctors stopped pulling the plug on Jason when Lynn heard him say "Number 9!" And Lynn exclaimed "Did he just say something?!" And when Jason woke up I nearly fainted or vomited or both! I get interested so easily! 😅 I do think that Dr Death is an allegory for the grim reaper. I was screaming so badly at the telly to the point where my mum asked me to turn it down! As the credits rolled I was taking deep breaths out of terror.
