The Return of Hattons (Sort Of)! Railway Roundup - March 2024 - Railway News
MERRY CHRISTMAS, KNIGHT TRAIN!!!
Interesting review. I recently bought a BR green version and fitted a Next18 decoder to it. It works well over Insulfrog points - the decoder has 'brown-out protection' - akin to a stay-alive which probably helps it over the gaps. This doesn't help with DC operation but I wonder if some kind of stay-alive is still possible?
My suggestion would be to replace the sheet rail with some appropriately sized piano wire. Aside from the likelyhood of it breaking when being posed, even simple handling is equally possibly detrimental.
You could also try removing the rear pony and with a round file make the axel slot a bit deeper - this worked on the previous design
Dear viewers, It has been brought to my attention that in the video I say this is 'All wheel drive' where what I meant to say was 'All wheel delivery' of the power to the driving wheels. This was an oversight I can likely attribute to the distractions of festive preparations! I shall conduct myself properly on my point delivery in the future, definitely better than the conductivity of this model over points! I won't be checking comments for the rest of the year. See you in 2025!
The pick ups need adjusting and always check the back to back measurement."All wheel drive"....er no,only one axle is driven by the motor.I suggest you stop being critical and actually learn about your subject before making a video.
And it is not "all wheel drive", either. Only the six driving wheels are driven, the rear of the three driving axles by the motor, the other two by the coupling rods. Sorry to be so critical, but you really do not seem to know what you are talking about, do you? Anyway, Merry Christmas, and a more accurate New Year 2025, eh?
Well said.
You spoke about "the rear bogie". It is just one axle, not a bogie; a bogie has two or more axles. Sorry, but I am a pedantic old bugger!
As a suggestion, use a digital meter set to continuity and check that each pickup is making electrical contact with each wheel.
Interesting. I've overlooked this model but really like it. I love Dapol locomotives so might have to think about it. Can you check the wheel pickups on yours, I'm guessing if wipers one or two may not be touching the wheel backs properly leading to the stuttering over points? Thanks
Thanks. Looks great in that livery. My first run shirtbutton model is a dream with no issues.
What a shame, I have one of the first releases and removed the spring on the rear pony truck it now does everything as expected.
@@malcolmmyatt9092 Thanks for watching! I'll have a look at the spring after the festive break
The Hornby model does the exact same thing. Gets half way across the point and stops dead. Really frustrating.
Thanks for watching! That's equally annoying, I heard the Hornby one wasn't as strong as the Dapol one which swayed me towards this one. With such a long wheelbase you'd think there'd be one variation out there that's worked out that issue.
I have a Talyllyn in the green livery, and as soon as I removed it from the box, I realised it was just a Skarloey repaint job. I am truly disappointed, as my other Bachmann locos are of exceptional accuracy and quality. I haven’t tried mine yet, but as I have Peco 12inch rad points, I am anticipating trouble now. Did you just file off the offending bulge underneath to get clearance? I’m not sure yet how I will get over the coupling height problem. Bachmann have really let their customers down with this model.
Thanks for watching! I didn't file off any of the bulge on the bottom as I wasn't sure what the consequences might be, but if some thinning of the bulge is possible that might be enough to do the trick.
Nice review. Also just got a new tooling Prairie. With a Zimo decoder installed that has some on board stay alive, performance at low speed over points is OK 80-90% of the time with an occasional infuriating stall. Looking at adding some additional stay alive. Interestingly, I have more issues with the rear bogey in reverse than going forward!
Thanks for watching! A Stay Alive would definitely help. Interesting about the rear bogie on yours, I wonder how much these vary between models and whether there's a dependency on how/who fitted them at the factory.
i think someone likes top gear
Thanks for watching! Just a little bit... But the laps are a good way of benchmarking all the models in a standard way I think, and hopefully entertaining!
Great review, these need loads and loads of running in, very clean track + wheels. They are nice model for the right price. Cheers
Thanks for watching! I'll keep giving it spins round the layout and see where that gets it. It's a lovely model so if the running improves it'll be well worth the money.
An in depth review like this is the kind of thing I like to watch on my birthday!
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it, and happy birthday!
@@TheKnightTrain88 Thank you!
What a moan!! A few years ago we didn’t have rtr 009 I can’t wait to get one
Thanks for watching! In that time we have had some fantastic RTR 009 models that have only made the shortcomings of this one far more obvious. I really wanted to enjoy this one but it didn't live up to the excitement for me personally.
THIS LOOK GOOD MUST CATCH UP WITH YOU OTHER VIDEOS TOO
Thanks for watching! Yes please check them out, and there's plenty more in the works!
Vinny’s tender is not what I expected to see in this review
@@2DIttyBitty Thanks for watching! Vinnie's tender has been very useful for gauging clearance with the rails, platforms etc., being so big and wide. His main body is currently on my workbench for repairs after an unfortunate incident last year, but thankfully all he needs now is a repaint and then he should be good as new.
That's one I'd like to have - although, the sprung chassis isn't entirely new, those very old Peco Wonderful Wagons have sprung leaf springs and sprung buffers
if they make douglas I hope they use the tooling for duncan if they ever decide to un cancel him.
@@karenfan010 Thanks for watching! I think Bachmann's plan is to use the Bachmann Thomas toolings as the basis for their Talyllyn engine releases rather than vice versa, so Duncan's lack of direct transferability into Douglas is why Duncan was cancelled. As such they couldn't get as much back on what the tooling investment would cost. The same issue persists even if they tooled Douglas up as it wouldn't look enough like Duncan for a straight forward alternative release.
@@TheKnightTrain88 the blame for that is mostly duncan’s cgi design as it looks awfully inaccurate to douglas, and mattel won’t allow them to use anything but the cgi series for reference. although if they released douglas first that would give them an excuse to use its rolling for duncan.
Looking good 👍
Thank you! I'd scheduled for this to come out several weeks ago, but then got my AB and Talyllyn delivered which I reviewed instead. The yard looks vastly different now which I'll show in upcoming vids.
I have an update for you my skarloey is now dcc chipped and on very low speeds i wasnt able to achieve before on analogue it gets stuck on peco points too
@@epicmoon8874 oh no! So it's not just mine. I wonder if the Peco 009 track isn't widely available in the US, so the tooling was developed to run on N gauge track which is more widely available and has smaller scale point moulding. That would explain a fair bit if that's the case.
@TheKnightTrain88 interestingly is that my roco h0e points still r not a problem but luckily at a bit more then the slowest speed possible peco isn't a problem for my skarloey either
But yeah that might actually be the reason most videos that dont use 009 track use kato n gauge track so this might be actually the reason
And when going in a straight line peco points r not a problem at any speed
An Andrew Barclay was my first Accurascale purchase, too. But I really don't understand why they've gone with such a large box. It's large enough to hold an O gauge model of the same loco. Thankfully, mine escaped damage and ran perfectly fine 🙂 👍.
@@RG-Models86 thanks for watching! That's good to hear. Yeah the standardised box size thing sounds sensible but it's still perplexing. I'd be interested to know if it's a cost saving or material saving decision. I was happy the original Hattons packaging was smaller than the norm so this box being so huge was a bit disappointing.
I have the Caledonia railway lined grey Andrew Barclay and I love it!! Looks odd seeing it in a big box like you said Waiting for the p class to be in stock
Thanks for watching! The grey one looked pretty good. Fingers crossed the P classes don't suffer from the same motor and cab damage issues.
nice review on the history of the Barclay Steam loco, not something I would want even so a nice review
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed seeing this one in action.
As someone who has a Chatham P Class and Andrew Barclay from Hattons, these are some very high quality models. Nice to see another company take on the tooling for this particular model. It was a real shock when Hattons announced they're closure. I think 2024 has been a real mixed year for railway modelers and the hobby in general. From Hattons and Warley at the NEC not being a thing anymore, to getting some really nice models and a replacement for Warley in the form of the National Festival of Model Railways.
Thanks for watching! Both engines may not have all the modern bells and whistles but they're solid and dependable. The start of the year was shockingly horrible but thankfully things seem to have swung back around to a more happy note.
Hattons get an undue amount of praise for a company that really did a lot to destroy many smaller model shops. It's a little on the nose to see them praised in one breath then see their biggest advocates, youtubers who have taken affiliate deals with hattons, suddenly lament the closure of small model shops and say how they can't afford to shop locally for models for their reviews. It's just kinda sad that some people will cause damage then play sad about the outcome while running into the distance with their gains.
Hattons was my introduction and foundation for this hobby, and was effectively my local shop growing up besides a small second-hand market stall. I've got great memories of in-person browsing and customer service there so in my eyes and experience the praise is warranted. I do go out of my way to seek out what I want in smaller model shops - all my trackwork was bought from them in-person and I've already made a list of what to get in a visit next week. But nine times out of ten they never have the engines or rolling stock I want in the right livery/variety and can't get it in from manufacturers, so I have to put in pre-orders with bigger website stores or wherever exclusive runs are being done. My nearest local shop is now over an hour away, as both owners of the two nearest me retired and closed up. But Hattons will always be the gold standard for me and nowhere else I've come across has matched it's service.
@TheKnightTrain88 I completely understand that they were many people's local, Liverpool is not a sparsely populated place(well mostly lol) however there were many for who it was not, it was just a bit cheaper, it made the pounds go further, it meant more models. This greed destroyed other businesses. We talk about greed from manufacturers around pricing, we fail to see our own greed and the impact it has had on people's exposure to the hobby. Less shops means less places people might stumble upon the hobby, less places to go to ask for in person advice, less of all the things we talk about when we see youtubers lament the lack of models in shops on the high street and lack of customer service, those shops were the customer service, we destroyed it by shopping with the likes of hattons. We shouldn't mourn it so hard, it ruined our hobby a lot.
@@Samanthasrailadventures I don't think people opting for to purchase from the cheapest place is necessarily down to greed. Modelling is an expensive hobby and some people may not have been able to take it up unless they went for the absolute cheapest option they could find; higher prices elsewhere could've proved inhibitive. I couldn't properly begin to take it up until I got higher paying work and whatever I had to put towards it was budgeted and had to be stretched. Thankfully I'm now more fortunate, but that's not the case for many others.
I see your point with the immnbile trailing truck but to be fair that is how the actual loco is set up is it not?
Thanks for watching! Yes that's true, but a lot of models have come out over the decades engineered slightly differently/tactfully compared to their true-to-life counterparts in order to aid negotiation of miniature-scale trackwork, so it's not outside the realms of possibility and would've been useful here.
@ that’s totally valid. I’m honestly surprised they didn’t attempt to incorporate a Peter sam style gearbox where the pony truck is powered as well to help with pulling power. They missed an opportunity to update the model. That and the cab interior. You were spot on that it’s lacking detail big time.
“Wonky” model.
I cant lie I like the video it's just seems like a model that isnt perfect because its only been on the market a month
this is the first time ive watched one of your videos and i love the reference to classic Top Gear with the lap times! and the lap board on the back of your door is so cool!
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it! I thought the lap times would be a fun way of judging locomotive scale speed and gearing (and to race trains)!
It’s better than nothing.
Thanks for watching! It is, but better than nothing for £110-150 is a steep ask. For that money I'd expect something that's decent and reliable in all departments, not just how it looks
I am curious about your pronunciation of Tallyklyn. Is it the Welsh pronunciation to put a ck sound where there is a Y?
Thanks for watching! That's how the Talyllyn railway themselves pronounce it on their videos and media so I went with that. It seems to be how the double L in Welsh words is pronounced but I'm not a Welsh speaker so happy to be corrected on that!
it also seems to me that is something is wrong with the proportions of the wheels and/or wheel spacing.
Thanks for watching! My Bachmann Skarloey arrived just after this model and that is a better runner. The gauging on Skarloey came in at 7.6/7.7mm so I might try and re-gauge Talyllyn's wheels to see if that improves the running at all.
What number is it called to run it on the layout?
Thanks for watching! I'm not sure what you mean by your question.
@TheKnightTrain88 didn't Bachmann already make a tayllyn?
@Kenstonprodutions nope, they announced this model in August 2022, but it is now only just being released.
@TheKnightTrain88 oh.
Skarloey to bachmann: WHAT DID YOU DO!?-
Thanks for watching! Duncan and Sir Handel are meant to be the rough riders, not Skarloey's own brethren!
railway community: but your not!
fast boy
Thanks for watching! Yes definitely, way too fast and faster than the box says it should go!
I can't seem to find one on Ebay
Thanks for watching! These have only been released in the US so far, they aren't due to be released more generally in the UK until early next year. I got mine via a US import of some stock.
What a great review, I received mine the other day, and have yet to take it out of the box. I paid 109.99 US dollars for mine, plus shipping. Just looking at it I am disappointed as well, and after seeing your review, I wish I did not waste my money☹. Bachmann has and can do better in OO9 (HOn30 here, but I model OO9). Their little Baguley Drewry is outstanding, lots of detail and mine runs like a top. I am going to purchase another. Again Thank You for the review, thinking of hedging my losses and sell it on the famous auction site and maybe get a little back! Cheers!
Thanks for watching! Glad you found it useful. Yeah I agree, this doesn't hold a candle to Bachmann Europe's 009 offerings which is unfortunate given Talyllyn's significance and appeal. Hopefully they rectify this if they do the rest of the Talyllyn fleet and up their standards.
I have just thought of a model you need Try the double farlie It’s the perfect mix of talylln and your George England … here’s why - They are Bachman like talylln . So will have no issues with all of your wagons when coupling up in that area of your videos . And as for running quality . It goes as a good speed and from my knlwledge dosent have any low riding bits on the chassis In short it’s perfect .
Check out my review of the Statfold Barn open wagon and brake van. I borrowed my dad's double fairlie for that test, but as it was pre-owned I can't give it a true review. That model is stated to need minimum second radius curves to run but went smoother round my track than Talyllyn!
I work mainly with just N scale … but I would like 009 Since it’s the same gauge of tracks … however if I were to get one first it would be Princess . Tho I have seen talylln in person and she is an adorable little engine she is . And I never got to see any small or large englands … tho I have seen double farlie … down york Tho the models for 009 I have always wanted was Double farlie Princess And a mainline hunslet linda if I could I would … and I could considering I have N scale tracks that can fit the engines . It is for me mainly the different couplers . I mean … I don’t want to pourposley purchase completely seperate rollingstock for a talylln . Tho … when I build my layout in N scale . I am fearing if I run my 009 talylln on it she will look massive . What do you think ? If I have fully N scale should I even consider a talylln model of my own I mean at the least princess has alternate N couplers so she could really work fine on my layout ignoring that it’s narrow gauge 00 on N scale rails . However Talylln … she has no alternate couplers . And I really hate that about her model . Sure I recon that Bachman don’t expect me to have there 009 tallylln pulling any N scale BR mark 1 express coaches 😂 but it could happen if I chose and I wish we got a detail bag . Anyways . Bye . And what’s your thoughts .
Thanks for watching! The Peco Englands are alright but they are plastic in body and tender construction and have traction tyres to make up for a lack of weight. If you find one on the cheaper side it won't hurt to pick on up and give it a go - they are one of the cheaper pre-owned 009 gauge locos going, mine was £90 from Hattons. Peco also do alternative couplings to the standard hook and loop, so you could give their rolling stock a try. most Bachmann 009 stock is the same with couplings that can be changed, but the exception is anything from the Bachmann Thomas range with the same couplings as Talyllyn. Hope that helps!
Horrid, it isn’t even in scale with the rest of Bachmann’s OO9 range. I expect this when Bachmann re-releases decades old models, but not for modern stuff. Do it properly or don’t do it at all.
Having measured mine, I reckon it is 4mm rather than 3.5.
Thanks for watching! Yeah this model feels like an attempt at a passable model of the real engine rather than a carefully crafted miniature. The tooling is less than 10 years old!
@@TheKnightTrain88 I have done a mini review which will be live in about half an hour on my channel.
Talyllyn doesn’t even have 2 coal bunkers…? Why is this model so bad for such an expensive price And they don’t even have it in a blue version!
Thanks for watching! I did wonder whether they would add the blue one when the engine returned to steam, potentially as a Talyllyn railway exclusive release. But alas nothing happened.
Worth remembering that there is nothing between Bachmann UK and Bachmann US....but air.
They have different design teams working in different countries mate
Coal load on the drivers side 😭
Thanks for watching! Gotte keep it where you can I guess 😂 or (god forbid) change the tooling!
