After reading everything and even the information you provided. Hypothetically, if I was in Michael’s shoes I would have sold everything accept for Michael’s catalog,publishing, and masters. This is only speculation but I believe that he hated the music business and but he loved music because that’s all he knew. Thus, in order to be free he would have had to sell everything at once besides his catalog, publishing, and masters. What happens when you mix the Corporate Greed + Mob. People talk about how feared Suge Knight (Deathrow Records) was but they never tell you who he learned from. The music business and the mob are one entity. Too many deaths of successful Black artists to all be ruled as (murder + suicide + car crash) and rarely natural causes. The music business is an evil sick twisted world ran by wannabe mafia bosses who kill for profit especially when it comes to Black artists. Ik this is an old ass video but I gotta say, I think you did some underrating of lupe here. And don’t get me wrong, this is probably the most fairly I’ve ever seen someone argue this, but i think you ignored some aspects of what makes lupe so great in this. For starters his smash hits never Really undermined his artistry, the show goes on is a scathing criticism of Atlantic records, superstar is an integral piece of the story of Michael young history, daydreamin is one of the most creative songs topic wise in hip hop history, and the closest to actually having his art compromised was battle scars, but I’d argue it was less his art being compromised and more just him wanting to write a simple song. Also, when it comes to concept albums, damn is basically food and liquor, the main thing damn gets praise for is being played forward and backward but he doesn’t really execute that forward and backward concept as well as lupe did on tetsuo and youth anyways, overall I think using reviews to judge the artistry of their projects doesn’t work because Kendrick’s albums are much easier to understand than Lupe’s, something like drogas wave seems disjointed until you realize it’s really 3 sections that tie into the concept of alternate history, honestly Lupe’s most Kendrick-esque album is probably good and liquor 2, because it’s overtly political, easily understood, and very listenable if you’re accustomed to the sound of the artist. I’d argue by the end of both their careers Kendrick will outdo lupe in greatness but he won’t be better. In a way Kendrick is a dumbed down lupe, which isn’t a bad thing, it opens him up to more critical success and allows his messages to reach more people, but his messages are simpler, in a way Kendrick tells you the ills of the world in a very emotionally poignant way whereas lupe dissects them and shows a deeper understanding of why they happen and what they mean. Which is why it’s often so easy to point at things Kendrick gets praise for and say lupe did it first, a lot of Kendrick’s deepest most introspective work is a lot of Lupe’s shallowest, but the trade off is that a commercial success for lupe is a commercial failure for Kendrick.

I appreciate your hard-work in this 3 part series. Your knowledge, dedication, and passion has not gone unnoticed. In 2024, I am 25 years old and I am deeply disturbed. Older generations like to say my generation (Gen Z) and later generations are lazy. I find it absurd how they can make these statements while seeing/knowing all that has happened to MJ. Music genius and also businessman, he hates talking but when he does it’s so intellectually powerful. He was a step ahead of the big guns, he also knew how to use his fame and money to support charity and children around the world and always made time in his busy worldwide tours to visit hospitals and orphanages, he always made time for his fans and thanks them endlessly for their loyalty. Not only is he powerful but he is humble and sweet. The media and tabloids really exploited him and the accusers really crumbled his downward spiral to deteriorating health and wellness.
