Some things are OVERRATED in Japan | Conbini Cult Ep 2
Like as Frankie said “Cuz that’s mean”is true, I can totally agree with that, but at that time or at that era I should say, the Japanese prank show or entertainment TV programs were so crazy. Especially for older people , those TV shows weren’t acceptable things at all. To top it off, it’s not acceptable for Japanese who live in nowadays society, I guess…I wish. Yep, Nasubi or Nasu is eggplant in Japanese.
It is needless to say tho, I’m looking forward to a next episode of yours as well 👍
10 a.m. is early? It's two hours away from lunch...
Earlier than we usually record
-Frankie
I was still in pre-school when I saw my best friend’s much older brother turn on their sprinklers just as she and her cousins had reached the exact center. He timed it so they get as wet as possible before they could escape. Shouting “April Fools!” and laughing, I couldn’t believe he found it humorous, or that society created a special day for people to be cruel to each other.
that's so sad!! some people just use pranks or jokes like that as a way to be mean with less consequence
Nasubi’s documentary is already out!! It’s called The Contestant and it’s on Hulu. We both watched it and will have a deep dive on it for the next episode!! If you want some homework, you should watch it too before the new episode drops next week! It was apparently supposed to be on Hulu Japan as well but it wasn’t and we needed a VPN to watch it soooo idk.
hmmm,... Christmas time for Japan ... traditionally, you go to a performance of Beethoven 9th Symphony, eat o-sechi ryori, do endless cleaning, write New Year cards and try to avoid liver destroying end of year parties ... I hate this exhausting season ...
Those 忘年会 can be rough 😆 hopefully you get to take it easy this season!
In Korea, Christmas is a couple holiday, which is so odd to me😅
Okay so it’s pretty similar!

Happy Holidays Cheyenne and Frankie !!🎅🎄
Happy holidays!! 🎄💗💗

I've had my share of run in's with entitled obnoxious tourists (usually white) in this 2nd half of 2024 in Tokyo. Japanese have only themselves to blame for being far too docile, passive and wimpy to speak up and call out bad behavior. In Hawaii tourists that act like that get taught a "lesson" by the locals. Also inept clueless politicians, local leaders, who only care about tourist money need a good amount of blame.
As someone born and raised in Hawaii, I totally understand where you’re coming from 😅 to be fair I wouldn’t say ALL Japanese people are docile and wimpy like you said, since I have seen some speak up in my experience, but I definitely agree bad behavior should be called out more. Thank you for watching! 🤙🏽 - Cheyenne
The city of Anaheim, where Disneyland is located, had to face the issue of paying for police and other emergency services required for a number of tourists that often exceeded the city's actual population. For the last 30 years, a 15% "room fee" has been charged to help defray the city's costs for providing emergency services that such a large number of people require.
Oh wow! I didn’t know that. Need to do a deep dive on it now. Using taxpayer money for that seems pretty unfair
Aloha from TN Takashi!
Aloha!!
The "pink insulation stuff" is fiberglass. The air trapped between the fibers provides the insulation (Measured in "R-factor", for heat resistance), being spun glass helps make the material fire resistant. Even though I live alone, I have a refrigerator plus a separate stand-alone freezer I use it for both food, and to help make the ice I use to help with my chronic spine pain. Even though I hate all political ads, I'd still rather have them than deal with Japan's gaisensha (loud-speaker trucks yelling the ads from the street). The TV/radio ads are easier to ignore. This was a great topic! It was really fun hearing about Takashi's observations and insights from their visit to the US!
so that's what fiberglass is! no wonder my parents always said not to touch it 😂 the separate freezer is pretty useful!! also you make a good point about the tv ads being easier to ignore. it was funny to see Takashi's reaction to everything when we visited 😂 -Frankie
I love the pod but I'm honestly happy the October stories are over. Was not a fan 😅
that's fair!! next year 4 spooky episodes might be too much
If anyone is wondering, Takashi felt more comfortable having his mic clipped to his shirt rather than holding it the whole time

長文失礼しましたm(_ _)m
-Frankie

I live in Okinawa and when I was in the military there was some weird stuff that happened in the barracks. My roomate would wake up at 03 am every single day umprompted. We would also hear walking outside in the hall only to quickly check and there be absolutely no one. I saged the room and she stopped waking up at 3, we also never heard footsteps after that. I feel bad for the guy who moved into a place in Kitanakagusuku. Moving is a very spiritual thing here and you are supposed to leave salt and awamori along with a picture of yourself or whoever plans on living there. Its a very superstitious place! There are also random places you will encounter here that just feel very "heavy" for lack of explanation.
That is very spooky! Did your roommate see anything when she would wake up? Also didn't know about the awamori and leaving a photo of yourself before moving! Very very interesting. -Frankie
Whether you believe they're real or not, we hope you enjoy the stories 😈👻
The first girl was clearly deeply insecure and basically wanted the guy to reject all other potential scenarios and options she presented to him to make herself feel like she still had something worthwhile to offer to someone, its actual quite sad but girls often use “what if” questions to bait guys into reassuring them that they still want them and not any other woman or guy out there.
Didn’t even think of that!! That’s a lot to ask of a first date 😆
So I came from Australia to Tokyo. I used to stand to pee in Australia in the toilet at home. However, the shape of the toilet in Japan makes this a lot more difficult. Toilets in Australia don't have a lot of water in them and the bowl has a steeper slope. If I pee standing up in Japan, with the bowl being flatter and there being more water, it creates a lot more splash back so I have started sitting down to pee at home a lot more.
That’s so interesting!! I hadn’t thought about the shape of the toilets being different but it makes sense it plays a factor 🚽 -Frankie
As someone who lives alone and has to clean, sitting down is much more hygienic! I definitely support this type of behavior
it's nice to get some more opinions on this!!

The same for Korean Street interviews but the question that always comes up is, "would you let your significant other have a friend of a different gender?" So annoying lol

The standards and best practices followed by traditional broadcast media are completely absent from the social media landscape of today. Anyone can post interviews of people who may be drunk, or minors unable to provide meaningful consent. It's important to teach our kids "the Internet is forever" concept from a young age.

I don't have a degree but my step mother has a connection in Japan, is it still possible to be an ALT? I'm unsure what kind of Visa would be needed. Would the person she knows in Japan be able to do the Sponsorship Visa or something? Edit : I've been always wanting to move to Japan ever since I was a little kid and don't mind using teaching as a stepping stone, and if I enjoy I would like to continue. Though my focus is more into the tech side of things since I've worked in offices doing data entry and such. I wouldn't mind working in an office doing data entry or similar. I'm planning on making a move in a few years and am doing as much research as I can. I've also been slowly learning the language as I can as well. I just want a change in lifestyle and after studying Japan's culture, I'm even more enthusiastic to teach and learn over there.
thank you for your comment! to be an ALT you need the instructor visa which requires a 4 year degree :( companies might be willing to hire you but immigration is strict about degrees depending on the visa type. It's worth consulting with an immigration lawyer though! They would of course be the most knowledgable about which visa type you'd be eligible for It's great you are learning the language! Hopefully you would be able to get into tech here eventually!
Keep the word of the day!
thank you for replying! we already recorded a couple more without it but we can bring it back again next recording
