Bobby Hackett and Jerry Borshard Jam Session 1940 Columbus, OH
Here are two informal performances by the prodigious Bobby Hackett at the time he was a member of the Horace Heidt Orchestra. In early April of 1940 the Heidt band was appearing in Columbus, OH. One of Bobby's bandmates was trombonist Jerry Borshard who arranged for a few afterhours jam sessions with some of his local musician friends. You'll hear a very relaxed group clearly having fun and adlibbing all the way. For these tunes Borshard switched to vibes and to my ear is very reminiscent of Adrian Rollini on that instrument. This is a period when Bobby still had a Bixian influenced tone that changed subtlety and gracefully over the ensuing years. We are very fortunate that these informal...

St. Louis Blues - Worlds Greatest Jazz Band Live in Denver 1969

This performance is taken from a 54-year-old reel to reel tape which has degraded some over time, so I apologize for the audio shortcomings, but I hope you will find it enjoyable, nevertheless. It features a small version of the World's Greatest Jazz Band which was on the verge of becoming quite popular both at home and abroad. This is an extended rendition of the " St. Louis Blues" swung by th...

Delicious, reminiscent of the sessions at Squirrel Ashcraft's house. A fellow Hackett collector, someone we both know, has a 78 album of this material or some of it; perhaps a decade ago or more it turned up on CD. Thanks, DT!

You're spot on about the informal Ashcraft atmosphere. It seems Bobby was just at Squirrel's home the month before according to the Hulme-Whyatt discography. I live just a few miles from that hallowed dwelling and make it a point to drive by when visiting Evanston. The house is still there but additional homes have been built on the property. It gives me chills thinking about all of our heroes that jammed there in the 30's and 40's.

Oh, how wonderful to hear Bobby in the Heidt period without constraints! He must have felt like a kid skipping school. I think we may imagine, from both this performance and the '38 Commodore Freeman date that "What's the Use" was a Hackett favourite. It's sure one of mine, and it's thrill to hear this freewheeling treatment. Borshard's vibes reflect the Rollini influence to these ears, too. Many thanks, as always!

A great example of the swinging music the Jazz in the Troc/WGJB musicians produced in the Clancy Hayes years (1964-69). Clancy always played banjo (rather than guitar) with the band. Can you let me know whether there are any other Clancy vocals on the tape?, I am updating his vocal discography for inclusion in his biography that will be published later this year. @@daveytough8112 Thanks for the information. The Clancy vocal discography has a long version of St. James Infirmary (6.12) with a spoken introduction (explaining that the band will perform a special version with both Yank Lawson and Clancy featuring). I think it was issued as one side of a free disc with an Aspen magazine. I received it on a private CD which also has Clancy singing Michigan Water Blues and a band instrumental - I Cover The Waterfront. The tracks are noted as recorded in Aspen in 1964. Can you confirm the timing of your St. James Infirmary to clarify whether these are different recording. In any case the other two tracks are not in the discography so I will include them in the updated version which will be part of the biography. Will you be uploading them at some stage?, needless to say I hope so. Thanks again, regards Chris Reid.

Gene had of course updated his sound from the original Chicagoans days, but still some Krupaisms remained -- there's no mistaking him. That can be said for all of these jazz voices, though, right? My theory is that today's jazz musicians, irrespective of instrument, have absorbed the sound of so many players, that they don't have the distinctive sound of a, say, Teagarden or Freeman or Russell or Sullivan. It's great to hear Jack doing his old water glass trick on "Blues for Today." Thank you for this!
