Finally finished watching. Husk is a really interesting resource sink. I think she could be fun with Bishop's double resources ready for discarding. Well played gents.
Nicely done gentlemen! Fun game, way to show that Villain who's boss! It was fun watching all the different Pool cards see some play - Da Bomb helping bring it all home was a chef's kiss :D.
And to think I was debating using it!
I was today years old when I realised that Sidekick specifies "identity-specific ally". Thanks for the learning Bill!
He isn't the BoardGameLAWYER for no reason ;)
Very scary cards... I definitely want to avoid his nemesis when playing as Magneto. Thanks for the reveal! Will from MeepleProfessionals highly recommended y'all!
Awesome cards, always happy to have a villainous Halloween!
It was our very own 'scare tactic' for the day. ;)
@ love the thumbnail and intro music too!
Look, I'll be honest, I agree. The "defeating player" definitely reads very weirdly compared to every other card ever 😆 But I do understand what it means, so that's good. Amazing reveal, scary nemesis - but good for Digging Deep. Thanks for doing this! I'll be doing a video later today you guys might be interested in regarding why I suspect you guys had to post today. Sharing this video on my Discord server now regardless!
Its what happens when you are an English teacher for 20 years you get hung up on grammar :)
@@criticalencounterspod sokay, I learnt my English gud :)
YESSS. More popped collars! ❤ Glad you guys got a spoiler.
Always fashionable
It’s my joy to shout it live even if we use a different version in the final cut
"...watch some MTV?" "You mean Mojo Television?" "I SURE DO!" 😂😂 Never gets old.
I am in agreeance that they pretty much took the entire theming of this modular set from one issue of a comic. And I think that it is alluded to as to why they did not use the person that first comes to mind to me as a good Nemesis, because so much of Kimura is wrapped up in Trigger 42 and body autonomy. I think FFG wanted to distance themselves.
Cool scenario! And man I love watching SP//dr gameplay. Such an awesome hero design.
One of my absolute favorite hero designs. Prior to this pack I knew nothing about the character except what was in the Spiderverse movie and that is itself a different spin on the character.
@criticalencounterspod agreed. Have you tried her in 'Pool yet? I ran the three triple energies, Healing Factor, Stick-to-it-iveness, Avengers Mansion and a bunch of Web Warrior stuff. Turned out to be one of the strongest decks I'd ever built. And of course great fun.
@@marctimmins8806 I have not actually. I'll have to give it a try.
This made my day so much better
This end-game state shows one of the biggest problems with Hulk. He doesn't build. There's no good being able to occasionally deal huge damage if you can't solve any of the other problems the game throws up at you.
Watching this again reminds me how much I love Black Tom Cassidy. Such a perfect Modular. The stuns slow everything down, then Black Tom himself and Making Green pile on the pain.
Yeah he can be added into any scenario to ramp it up
Yes! This is one of my favorites too. Until I get dealt one of the cards. Then I hate it!
Great win guys! I was wondering what you had planned to do with Otto Spider Man Steve. Some clever way to get him into play? 😂 Nope!
Sometimes reading is HARD :)
Bananas all right. That has to be one of the most absurd games I've ever watched. Bravo gents, take a bow!!!
Thank you
Fun story time! So interesting how there are so many paths and storylines that can be taken when discussing characters that have been around seeming forever. I agree with the remarks about the app being a struggle to navigate. I have difficulty with finding things all the time.
Nice one! Thanks for setting up and doing the live plays. I agree with BGL that his pre-con is a bit expensive. Once he builds up, he often has the money for some expensive cards - it's just hard in solo with his low thwart to take the time to build a lot.
Fantastic issue gentlemen - loved the lore, Mike, truly top notch!
This game was BANANAS! The Maximum Effort at the end was just spectacular :) - so good with Symbiote Suit out.
Wasn't it? I really though the villains were finally going to win one
If groot get the superpower feedback, it would remove all of his growth counters. No matter how many he has
Ooo nice.
I give it 2 weeks and that collar will be right back on again.
Being generous
Watching this reminded me how much I disliked the Aggression Precon for Ice Man.
Pre-cons are all fairly rough, you might not have the optimal number of cards, etc I enjoy playing the pre-cons at least a few times.
Getting some serious deja vu! These cards remind of some that were revealed earlier... 😉 (The image fix is good, I did wonder why it wasn't on screen until later!)
He BAMFed away the first time!
Definitely looking forward to Nightcrawler. We just started a new gauntlet run with Bishop (A) and Jubilee (J).
Huh, looks like the video is missing an image! Fixing.
Does Brimstone Strike make him quick strike if he is already engaged with you? Quick strike triggers when a minion engages you and the rules for engage say "While a minion is engaged with a player, card abilities cannot cause the minion to engage with the same player again (as the two are already engaged)."
Great question! Yes, he quickstrikes as he effectively re-engages you - it's under the "Find" rules in the 1.6 rules reference. I found a weird paragraph under those "Find" rules that, at the time, we couldn't figure out what it was for. It's for this nemesis set! Here is the full entry: If a player is instructed to “find and reveal” a minion that is already in play, that player engages that minion and resolves any keywords and/or triggered abilities that resolve as a result of that minion being revealed
See what VillainTheory said, that's our reading of it too.
Yeah it's odd because the find rules then say "That minion is considered to engage that player unless it was already engaged with that player." So he doesn't re engage...but agree he ought to attack even if the rules aren't completely clear since otherwise the card does nothing
Since it says to resolve all keywords as if revealed, it looks like Quickstrike does trigger again. But if Thor was engaged with Azazel, he wouldn't draw 2 more cards with his Have At Thee response for engaging the minion since he was already engaged with it (and thus does not actually re-engage it). It's definitely odd and I can see a lot of people getting confused when Nightcrawler releases! But it seems to check out.
@@VillainTheoryah...that makes sense, they are want the keywords and when revealed affects to go off but not anything else which triggers on engagement.
Wow I wish I got a special note with my spoilers!! Awesome reveal, thanks for sharing these. I love the Brimstone Strike card, agreed that it's amazing. Love how Azazel keeps teleporting in and out. He's going to be a consistent threat once Shadow of the Past/Pursued by the Past first triggers.
We'll never know who wrote that note :)
Fun fact...Satan is a title in the Bible as well. It isn't an actual name and it beens the one who stands opposed.
What I took from this is that comics are a special kind of crazy! Great episode guys. I'm a big fan of the On The Run scenario and it was fun to learn more
Oh yeah, some things are pretty grounded and relatable and somethings are BANANAS.
What a cool scenario! I like the ally-hate approach. Congrats on the win gents.
Yeah a well done and fun custom scenario
Long time/first time. Love your fun and humorous approach to this game. What made me finally post was Mustafa's opening monologue on luck, migration, and the law. This is a sadly important topic that I am glad that he shared his thoughts on. I say sadly because the US has grown increasingly hostile to refugees and others who flee their homes because they are that desperate. He gives me hope, though with how clearly he explained the problem and that fact that he works on the topic. For anyone reading this, I can recommend a book on this subject. Carly Goodman's Dreamland: America's Immigration Lottery in an Age of Restriction published by University of North Carolina Press. Regarding the game itself, as a longtime player of all things FFG LCG coop card games, I was always struck by identity crisis at the heart of Marvel Champions. Is it casual or crunchy? When it was announced, they made it seem like it was designed to be a casual game (the designers even admit that they limit how complex hero designs are allowed to be), but the underlying mechanics (largely LotR LCG) are crunchy, complex, and fiddly. For example, in the initial release, it was not clear whether "you" referred to the player or the id card. It seemed to be a card by card thing until the Great You Rulings. I think Marvel Legendary offers a comparison here in that Legendary is truly a "beer and pretzels" game while Champions is inherently complex and destined for ever increasingly fiddly rules FAQs and timing rulings that demands sober attention to truly understand. Having said all that, thanks for the very enjoyable podcast and all of the intense work it takes to make it. I really enjoy the skits, the casual discussions, and the fun visual gags. Thanks for helping to make this a community and for making this community so fun and welcoming.
Well played Steve! That dr00 deck is absurd! Will have to give it a go sometime. I had wondered about double Supercharged attacks the other day. Glad to know I guessed correctly for a change.
dr00 makes good decks so always worth a look
GG Steve! nice cheating.
Hey its not cheating if you don't get caught or if you are a hero!
Yeah Maka! the answer at the end of the show... Uhhhh No. 🤣
I'm glad BGL gave a shout out to Andrew the Living Laser episode. That one goes down in history as one of the all-time greats. Completely insane. PS Magneto is mean!
Yes! Agree!!!!
I'm late on this, but the damage increase from Wild Wild West only applies to damage taken, not damage dealt. Overkill is calculated when damage is dealt, and then the damage you take from overkill is increased by one. So if the minion attacks for 2, you block with an ally with 1 HP, then he deals 1 overkill to you and deals 1 dmg to the ally. The ally actually takes 2 (1+1 more from the setting), but overkill has already been calculated, so that extra 1 just vanishes. You take 1 from overkill, which is increased by 1 from the setting, to be a total of 2 dmg. I think this might have gotten addressed in a chat later, but thought it worth highlighting as its a pretty complicated interaction but has been fleshed out now! Fun game to watch! I love both of these heroes SO MUCH! I mean, *Love smashing on these heroes so much*! :P
I'm fairly certain that gambit is from the Mutant Genesis Wave (the wave between the MG box and the NE box), since he should have released at the same time as Rogue.
Yes you are right! We have been so focused on the NeXt Evolution cards and the Marauder Champion Monthly stuff we forgot he came out in the Mutant Genesis wave. Good catch!
I love that you brought up Sifl and Olly (and posted that video in the Discord) - that was a bit of nostalgia for me! So fun - thanks for taking on this challenge and sharing it with us! Way to get the win with utmost theme for the success!
One of my favorites on the show was Precious Roy. 😆
Nice game gentlemen! Way to take down those silly Marauders during this Marauders Combatting Mutants month :).
Fun game, Steve! I love the real cards, and I hope you enjoyed Iceman, I have found him to be an absolute BLAST to play! :D
Hey thanks for watching. It possible you have the icons flipped. The main scheme starts with 2 threat per player and goes up each turn by 1 per player. There is an acceleration icon in play for campaign like in this game. So in a true solo it goes up by 2 each villain turn.
Long time listener, first time caller. I have not been able to beat Sandman standard true solo or with 2 characters, so I'm checking out a few videos to see if I'm playing correctly. Every video I watch has set up differently. One quick clarification - shouldn't Hapless Pedestrians start out with 2 Threat on it? Otherwise, I wanted to clarify that 3 threat is added each villain turn. That's how I played it, and it just seems impossible in solo!!!!
If you are playing true solo, non-campaign, you are only raising the threat by 1 each turn on the main scheme.
@@criticalencounterspod Yeah thanks! I was mistakenly adding an extra acceleration for the +1 on hapless pedestrians, so with public outcry I was doing 3 each activation instead of 2.
Great playthrough Steve! Magik is fun .... I've only played her once, but now I want to try her out again! There are just so many good heroes out there is hard to play them all! Haha...currently am into Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, Bishop, Domino and Thor (he's always fun!):)...
All good picks for fun games, I wasn't as sold on Angel as many others but recent game with Daniel changed my mind.
I love how enthusiastically you announced Goldballs 😂 Hey where did you get your aftermarket tokens? Mine are all worn out and I think I want some plastic ones to replace them.
For some reason that's a funny name. Those are Burger Tokens: burgertokens.com/ You get a sheet of sticky tokens that attach to pennies you can customize what's on either side so I have Stun on one side and Confuse on another, and other stuff like that. I suggest trying to put the threat on more more spread out because I never seem to have enough threat, but other wise like them.
People in this community are so amazing. So many great vibes here!
Well played Steve! A great win. Loving the play with real cards. There was a few moments where I was sure Ice Man was done for.
Yeah me to! Thanks for watching.
Love all your material obviously, ...but I EXTRA love the live playthroughs!! Something about watching a live game - the shuffling, the sounds of cards hitting the table...nothing sweeter!! Im loving Iceman too! I never really play precon decks, but its always interesting to see how they fare....thanks for the awesome video!!
Thanks! Might I suggest you always play a pre-con a tleast once. Open that pack, put it on the table and play it once against your favorite scenario. You see what the designers had in mind, and its a good challenge too. Then deck build from there. There are many people out there that only play pre-cons or use pre-cons a lot, you'd be surprised. Its a fun way to interact with the game.
@criticalencounterspod You convinced me! I might try that for Jubilee or Nightcrawler ....I think I did it for Domino and just found some of the reskinned cards (is it Even the Odds..? The justice card - remove 1 threat off each side scheme ...deal 1 damage to villain etc) superfluous in the deck... Also, with the Iceman precon for instance...I'd only put one copy of Team Building in the deck, so for me the two other copies could be replaced with better cards.... A big part of the enjoyment for me is the deck construction...but I'll play a few more precons with the coming releases because I like the idea you can see what the designers have crafted for that hero...!:)...and it would give an extra challenge, playing the precon....(sometimes the scenarios are challenging enough! Haha) Would love to see more live playthroughs from CE!:)
@@Rey_Plays_Games Yeah the Pre-cons are not the best optimized decks but they provide a good interaction with the game for a game or two, then its time to deck build. We will try and keep the live plays coming, its too bad its so hard to record multiplayer games live.
@criticalencounterspod yeah it's such a shame it's hard get multi play with live cards...I've seen some other channels basically cast their tables in sync...but then you need someone controlling the encounter deck ....I'm currently on a quest to learn how to play Cyclops and pilot him well....I'll look at his precon deck and see if it gives some clues as to hos overall design!:)
@@Rey_Plays_Games We play plenty of MP games here, but I don't have the equipment to film the whole table, etc. We need more of that sweet sweet Pateron money to ever think of doing that! :) Or perhaps some Break'in and Tak'in
Really love your live card setup. Super easy to follow along. And the card images on the screen help out a ton. I also like that you feature the precon. The raw card shuffling kinda triggers my OCD. I was struggling with tempo when playing with his precon because of how expensive his deck is. I had to go with a 43 card deck by tossing in Energy, Genius, and Strength just to try and get a tiny bit more economy. I do have a question: was there something that caused you to begin the game with extra threat on the main scheme? I feel like I missed something there. Good Game! Please keep making these. Super fun to watch.
Thanks! Hmmm, why did it start with 3 threat? I think I read 3 Knock Counters and that number was stuck in my head....wait a minute, who was that bald guy in a wheel chair that just rolled out of the room? Professor X must have messed with my mind and FORCED the number 3 to be in my mind so I started with too much threat! LOL
@criticalencounterspod That Guy! Always always sticking his mind where it doesn't belong.
This episode felt like a fever dream in the best way. Loved the commitment to the Pawn Stars bit; it really livened up talking about an otherwise mid modular set.
It is def difficult to do lore segments on modular sets like this. Thank you to all our guests for coming and bringing their A game, Maka, BGL, Lexicon, DArcy and Weenkster! Go check their stuff out also.
