I agree with most of what you’re saying. As others have mentioned, crime is highest in Belize City, especially certain parts of the city. This has always been the case. There has been an uptick in gang activity outside of Belize City in recent years but this seems to be confined to a couple of villages. Like in the U.S., much of the crime is between family members and people who know each other. In such cases, copious amounts of alcohol are often involved. While crime against expats is infrequent, it does happen and often as a result of folks making unwise decisions about where they are, who they’re hanging with and what they’re consuming. Finally, you note how law enforcement is pretty good about catching criminals, however the conviction rates are generally low. Belize simply lacks the resources to effectively prosecute many criminal cases.

I love the river in this video, it looks very refreshing. Your advice is spot on! I remember when I was living in Belize about Cash being king! I think having a property that is MORE than a city lot would make the most sense in terms of being able to grow a garden and have good boundaries with neighbors. I am surprised the Country hasn't welcomed more international trading without such tariffs or taxes creating problems. I can think of a lot of small business ideas that could take off right now, especially with all the land for sale right now. Thanks for sharing the beauty of your area!

Excellent video and a great outcome! But are you now looking into getting insurance? I live in Corozal with my wife and two daughters. I moved here three years ago, and I don't have insurance. I have been studying and analyzing all the possibilities, 15 different companies (IMG, Cigna Global, April International, AXA, Safety Wing, Allianz, Aetna, MSH, Geo Blue, William Russell, AIG, Bupa, Integra Global, Foyer Global Health, Sagicor...), and all their rates and options. It is not an easy choice; I am not rich and still working. I saw many videos of ex-pats getting into difficult situations; some had insurance, others not. If you have complications, the bill can get bigger and bigger... imagine you have a cerebral tumor, and you need surgery in Merida because they can't do it in Belize. Some insurance companies even cover transfers and everything in Belize and Mexico. Living abroad without insurance is reckless, in my opinion. That time, you were lucky!

So i have been in belize. Belize needs to stop exporting oil and getting it refined elsewhere and bringing back into the country. That would solve half the problem.
