Susanne Lakin - Biblical Anthropomorphism - Evidence of a Unipersonal God
In this presentation from the 2024 UCA Conference, Susanne Lakin surveys the biblical descriptions of God with a focus on the texts where God is described in anthropomorphic terms. She argues that even as metaphor, these descriptions carry content, specifically and always describing God as a single person.
To quote from her paper: "the anthropomorphic descriptions of Yahweh throughout its pages give evidence of a unipersonal God. God’s “body” as depicted by the Bible writers is hominid, as humans are fashioned in his image and likeness. The argument that a multipersonal God is hidden in plain sight in the Hebrew Scriptures and that only through progressive revelation has this truth come cl...

The person of Jesus in his human flesh is the mediator between us and the divine essence he shares with the Father and Spirit. Why can’t Unitarians understand the difference between a person and a divine being or essence? For all you Unitarians, what did the council of Nicea that you believe “invented” the trinity stand to gain by doing so? They didn’t invent it. They formalized the teachings of the church into creedal doctrine since in 325 they could finally gather together without fear of being murdered by the state after 3 centuries of persecution.

Do you think Jesus is two persons (one human and one divine)? On traditional Chalcedonian christology, there’s only one person, the divine person. In contrast, 1 Timothy 2:5 identifies Jesus as a man. Do you think the second person mediates between mankind and the first person? Or between mankind and himself? You said he mediates between man and an essence, but that isn’t what the passage says. You might want to study the history further if you believe the church was trinitarian before 381.

If you read this in the Tanach you’ll understand, but you have to read Isaiah from Chapter 1 to know what’s going on. Then pay particular attention starting with Chapter 7… in the days of Ahaz… the child is a sign to Ahaz and Israel, and it’s a child born to Ahaz who ruled and SAVED Jerusalem and Judah… Hezekiah was a type of Savior in the short run. It’s not about Yeshua in the immediate sense but Hezekiah (like David) was a foreshadowing of the ETERNAL savior and KING who will sit on the throne over ISRAEL (Jerusalem and Judah), which is what the previous chapters are all about!

Oh ok, heretic anything else you wanna share with the class, buddy? even if some of the early church or even a lot wasn’t a trinitarian like Athanasius and others perpetuated and articulated they definitely were not Universalist Unitarians Many of the most influential church fathers essentially articulated some Trinitarian model of the Godhead and affirmed the divinity of Christ like the anti Nicaean fathers even though individuals that would take their model as doctrinal truth would be labeled heretical today by mini mainline trinitarian for not uploading that God was always a Trinity rather than bringing for the sun and a eternal birth of splitting his essence and becoming one and the people in the early church that were Universalist, many of whom would not go as far as people do today which they would believe it’s a possibility not a guarantee of the whole world and mankind being saved like mini Scholastic sources today of that theological persuasion they were either origin or they leaned closer to the influence of the gnostics not saying that everything that a gnostic believed or believes is radical because that would be logically fallacious, and absurd but the Doctrine of Universalism is very fundamentally gnostic as it fundamentally makes the punitive and judicial hand of God, demented and evil just like they did with him in the Old Testament and I’m speaking about especially the most extreme version of universalism, which says everyone, including the fallen angels, and Satan will be saved, which especially is not very thoroughly fought out how Satan can be redeemed when he’s not a human he had full and perfect knowledge of God and of evil and chose evil and became the personification of it when at least for 99% of humanity there is an ignorance on both parties so even when a human goes into the depths of darkness, there are still is that split that divine light of the essence of God, which distinguishes themselves from a demon where evil doesn’t of the whole consumes them where they are still made in the image of God and forgivable. I know this is extended philosophy on top of scripture, but there are still fundamental philosophical explanations that are pretty mandatory from the other side that is also not explicitly answered by scripture because of certain doctrines since the Dawn of the church, we either have to stay silent when the Bible is or we have to use principles and indications to make extended theology and philosophy to answer or to try to answer when the Bible doesn’t clearly Answer.

Because the first followers of Christ knew who he was, God in human flesh. Answer me this. If Jesus is just the human son of God, the messiah, and/or a lesser divine being, as Tuggy has said. Then why are God and Jesus so terrible at transmitting that idea to the masses? Surely God would have known that the ambiguous words of Jesus and his followers would cause confusion for the MAJORITY of all people after the first century and that most people would come to believe he is God based on the confusing words he and his followers spoke/wrote? Why is God such a terrible communicator? The answer is that he isn’t. Jesus made claims about his own divinity and God has appeared in plurality through the OT and NT the whole time and Unitarians need to jump through hoops to explain away the claims made by Jesus. The original followers didn’t need to debate whether God was 1 or 3. They knew he was 1 God in 3 distinct persons even if they couldn’t conceptualize it.

@ First, that video doesn’t answer my question. Second, let me tackle this point by point real quick. In response to blunder #1: Unitarians are making a large assumption about the early church reading the teachings of Plato into John 1. There isn’t any evidence that the interpretation of John 1 was influenced by Plato and most Christians today don’t know Plato’s teachings and still interpret it as John calling Jesus, God. Blunder #2: it is very clear in the NT that the apostles only believed in 1 God. The OT is also VERY clear there is only 1 God and I don’t see any evidence that the church believed in multiple Gods EVER. The council of Nicea was created to formalize the already trinitarian teachings of the church since to a non Christian the concept could be confusing on first glance (as you all prove by clearly not understanding the concept). There is no evidence that the church believed in 2 Gods. They believed (and still do) in 1 God who has 3 persons. Blunder #3: There is no evidence of any bishops or church fathers altering the definition or concept of God. This video is straight up lying, making false accusations that Christians believe in 1 God acting as 3 (modalism) or 3 Gods acting as 1 (polytheism) when it is well known by Unitarian scholars that Trinitarians believe in 1 God who is 3 persons. They are not the same thing. 1 what, 3 who’s. I personally wouldn’t even be opposed to the concept of partialism since if you take the 1 INFINITE God and divide God into 3 “parts” each part would also be INFINITE, since you can’t divide infinity into anything less than infinity. Therefore each individual “part” of God would be equal to the whole since infinity = infinity. But I’m not 100% confident that that aligns perfectly with scripture. 🤷‍♂️

Who came with the two angels to Abraham when he fed them milk and meat and curds? He bowed his face to the ground and the Angel in the middle didn't rebuke him for worshipping Him. That is a theophany, if not a Christophany. We can see the Trinity doctrine in the Exodus from Egypt when God was in the pillar of smoke, and He was in the Tabernacle and He was in the effulgence emanating from the Mercy Seat up to heaven. God's triune nature is revealed in the first chapter of Genesis. Psalm 110:1 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at My right hand, until I make Thine enemies Thy footstool. Psalm 2:3-12 Let us break Their bands asunder, and cast away Their cords from us. He that sits in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall He speak unto them in His wrath, and vex them in His sore displeasure. Yet have I set My King upon My holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art My Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of Me, and I shall give you the heathen for Your inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve Yahweh with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and ye perish from the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him.

    • @CSLakin
      @CSLakin День назад

Hey Frank, I see nothing in the material you provided that implies either by inference or implicitly that God exists as a triune of equal cosubstantial "persons." We need to be careful to not read into Scripture what we want but instead take all in context and in harmony with the whole of Scripture. If you study, you'll see that many people are bowed to in honor and respect, which is what Abraham was doing in Gen 18. How exactly is God's triune nature "revealed" in Genesis 1? He is a singular self in dealing with Adam and Cain. God (singular) created (bara) all the creation in chapter 1. Isaiah tells that he alone created all that, and no one else. And Psalm 2 and 110 speak of his son, a subordinate, to whom he gives possession of the nations. If Jesus were already/always God himself, he wouldn't need to be given anything.

Frank, what you think you see, and what is actually present in Scripture are entirely two very different things. Nowhere within the verses that you cited does it say 'trinity', 'god-the-son' , or anything remotely trinitarian - you performed the epitome of eisegesis on those texts. What's worse, is that you can't even explain anything that you've attempted to conclude - what's a god-man (2 entirely incompatible ontologies), how can 3 YHWHs be only 1 YHWH, etc...?

These people are in denial. That Jesus is God is so clear from scripture that any argument to the opposition of that is laughable and pitiful. Not only do the scriptures make it clear but Jesus himself did. The very passage they bring up in this text and tells us on equivocally in Jesus was acknowledging his divinity. It would be one thing to say I don't believe that Jesus is God those scripture says he is and he acknowledged that he was, but it's utterly unintellectual denialism to say the scripture does not explain that Jesus is God incarnate. In fact if Jesus is not God incarnate the god of the Old testament cannot be true! God cannot punish one of his creatures for the son of another as he has stated more than once in the Old testament, and no rest times in the New testament in a different sort of way. Therefore if Jesus was not God then God has punished one of his creatures for the sin of other creatures and that cannot be true. So neither the Old testament God or Jesus Christ could be true if Jesus is not god. This is why God took on human fish to suffer the penalty we deserved for our sins because he cannot punish one of his creatures for the sin of another. The only solution to the problem of sin therefore is that he takes on flesh and takes the punishment himself. This by itself separates Christianity from all religions of the world improves the church that authored this video is in astonishing denial of what scripture says about god. They need to read Zechariah chapter 10 verse 12 for example. Then go weep at their denialism and ask God to forget themselves.

1:18:18 yes… the verse literally separates the 2… White wants to point to the “through all him” part and act like that’s a lynchpin to say he’s God, but that’s an agency claim, there is a very clear distinction between by someone and through someone… simple as that… so no… not even saying he’s God, if anything it’s clearly saying there is a God and Jesus, even if it says they both had a hand in creating the world, so why use the reason of man and just presume it should man Jesus is God

1:01:18 well I hope he’s subscribed to this channel they did an hour long breakdown of Philippians 2, John 12 mean nothing… already commented on it And 1 Peter 3:25 says Jesus is holy… already said many things are called holy… that word doesn’t automatically mean God… so ridiculous

Who cares… God and Jesus can both be holy… Leviticus 12 says things can be holy… Ok In no way does that mean Jesus=God… this is embarrassing

The problem with Phil 2:6 is the many interpretations… you can like that one, I like the one that says thought it not a prize to be considered equal with God… That’s right… that word for robbery can also be used as prize…

So Jesus thought he wasn’t equal… Like much of the Bible plainly points out

John 12:16 is not fashioned like he says… it’s eluding to the fact that his glorification made them finally believe… it in no way had anything to do with the glorification in Isiah… do I really need to reference all the glorification verses in the NT about regular people and start applying them to some sort of divinity? Come on… plain as day right😂 now

Isiah 52 and 53 are about the Messiah… prophecy about a messiah… and John says Jesus is the Messiah… that doesn’t mean God…

You gotta believe in the trinity… it’s literally based on 5 upon 5 or so upon 5 or so ambiguous verses…

31:46 It’s unsettling how many of these “cult characteristics” like opposing critical thinking, isolating and punishing dissection, requiring inappropriate demonstrations of loyalty, are exemplified in Trinitarian churches, in defense of the Trinity.
