I got this CD when it came out (I was ten 😂) and loved it. I played it so many times. Listening back, it's just a little too polished for my tastes. It all sounds a bit too loud and compressed. There are some great songs and melodies in there, but damn, the vocals really suck. A shame there wasn't better singing and rawer production.

Great review!!! Thank you for taking the TIME to listen to it song by song and really give your thoughts on each song and many of them I agree with and others I have my own lol. Great scores on the songs! For ME I would give "Eyes Wide Open" a 9.5 with "Vultures" and "We Are Shadows" :) Great overall album score! I LOVE this album!!! Since I like many different genres of metal and rock in general, the song "One Foot In The Grave" I enjoy! I like the Halestorm'ish rock radio friendly vibe and anthemic chorus which I find I can't get out of my head hahaha.

Awesome review! I love how you show yourself listening to it and do a track by track review. Sometimes I swear people don’t actually listen to the cd so this really helped. While I agree with most of what you said and had the same reaction to it, the chorus in “One Foot in the Grave” gets stuck in your head and is addicting as crack haha. Wasn’t a fan at first of the pop rock sound, but it grows on you. Also Mercedes does most of the low growls that you hear, such as in “Grime” and “Eyes Wide Open”.

Will Wood is, in my opinion, an artist that you need to nurture. He has said before that he has never learnt music in any form, everything is by ear (he can't read sheet music either) so he doesn't know the concept of chords and how they can make a song more 'likable' in the sense. When I first listened to Will Wood, it was really uncomfortable for me. Like I was sitting in a weird chair in a weird position but slowly you can ease into it, trust me. If you listen to music for relaxation and for enjoyment, Will Wood isn't for you. You really need to so-called 'gnaw' on his music to understand its full depth, and to really ease into the vibe. But through his albums, you can really see his growth (both musically and in his own person). If you want to listen to something less chaotic, and more of a reflection on his growth from being confused and in turmoil to someone who finally has control over his own life and psyche, you should really listen to In Case I Make It! :)

    • @mireya0269
      @mireya0269 2 месяца назад

What i find extremely fitting of the cover of Zoo Station, it's really the context, both the original context of the song and the context given by Nine Inch Nails. U2 was having a very hard time defining their new identity after their “bold” (i like the word pretentious more, honestly) album and documentary Rattle and Hum, was basically a failure in everything except commercially. But unlike the U2 of the present, commercial success was not the only thing driving the guys of U2. They wanted more. So, they started to seek inspiration in more places. One of those places, was the newly born Industrial Rock scene, specially with the album Pretty Hate Machine, by none other, but Nine Inch Nails. So one of the inspirations for the album was the Industrial Rock, pretty obvious in the introduction of Zoo Station, with all the distortions. For that, i find pretty fitting that Nine Inch Nails was selected to cover the introduction song of the Cover Project. But not only that, but i find pretty fitting that Trent Reznor was doing this cover in the first place. The original Zoo Station begins with soooo much confidence. Stating that it's glad to be alive, and basically, that they are here to change everything. It begins with an unparalalled energy, but also with a bit of rage, since Bono, Edge, Larry and Adam were pretty much forced to adapt this sound. But Trent? He has passed by so much since those days. He is no longer angry by his life. He just states with confidence that he is glad to be alive, and turns that energetic piece into this haunting ballad to life. It's absolutely masterful.

I really dig this analysis. It's something I would have likely attempted to cover at the time, but the ILTS series wasn't fully flushed out by that point. But this is what the comments are for 👌 Thanks for checking it out!

From my knowledge, the community is very open to discussion (putting aside their tendency to be creepy towards will but that’s another can of worms). Also, a lot of the problems you saw may be improved if you listen to the 2020 Remaster; the lyrics are more audible, the pause before -Ish is shorter, songs sound more distinct, at least to me.

I'm a little freaked out right now. I can't tell you how many times I've done exactly the same thing with that chorus; the only exception being that I'd run it back to that opening bass line instead of just returning to the beginning of the chorus. I mean seriously, it never occurred to me that there was someone else on this planet that was spun out on that one part of the song so as to play it over and over, other than myself. I can't even give you a good reason why it makes me feel that way. Just that it is perfection to my ears in every way.

I think the 19 minute Joan in the Garden is worth a revisit - of the two they've teased for the new album, Joan is the better one (albeit, much meatier). Decemberists love to play around with different musical styles, but long epics are their bread and butter so it's a totally different experience

With SDRE just take the journey and start on the debut Diary. Classic album from the genre. They do a follow up called 'the Pink Album' or LP2. The band then breaks up. The lead singer then does an interesting solo album called 'Return of the Frog Queen' which is a departure from SDRE but an amazing detour. Years later they reunite minus their bass player to record a reinvented album 'How it feels to be something on' which veers into prog rock and more mature sound. Then 'the Rising Tide' takes another interesting turn. All in all if you like how the journey starts then just follow it and soak it in. Following another breakup enigk does a number of very good solo albums

Anything with Nothing But Thieves in the title gets an instant view from me - best band around currently and Conor’s vocals are incredible. They don’t like to stick to one genre, so some of their stuff is alt-rock, some Indie, there’s some stunning ballads that really make the most of Conor’s range, and their latest album is a little bit disco. They’re fantastic live too - I saw their first performance of this latest single last week and it was much better than the studio version, heavier and less poppy. If you get the chance to see them live don’t miss it! Oh and the place in Essex that you forgot to write down is Southend-on-Sea 🙂

The original is a classic, but the revised live versions they play are much better, like the over the years through the woods version I think its the way it was meant to sound. Your right that the album's recording was kind of rough and I think it hurts this version. Plus years later and you have Troy on guitar as well so you get that trippy double guitar stuff happening plus the lap steel during the instrumental section of the song, one of the greatest songs ever, the live version anyway. Even if someone doesnt know queens of the stone age and never heard the song and you play it, they know they just heard something epic.

2012 was the first song I heard from Will and it's still one of my fav, I used to love this album but now I hate it because of Cotard's Solution and Dr Sunshine Is Dead, too much screaming, and to be honest I just prefer his live version of most of the songs of this album. Listening to the live versions on Spotify or on obscure places of internet I started to realise these songs are simply brilliant played live but now I just hate the album version (except for 2012 and Hand Me My Shovel, still my fav) I would not recommend In Case I Make It, too much of the same thing through the whole album (it's good tho but you guys don't seem to enjoy repetition which is understandable) but I will recommend is first album, "Everything Is A Lot" because this one has way more diversity, wether it is for the instrumentals or for the lyrics :) Finally I would recommend to listen to some of his songs from his last live album "In Cas I Die", in this one there's The Song With 5 Names and it happens to be one of the most calm songs he has on both of his Spotify profiles! He manages to give an infinity of different vibes to one song depending on the instruments and how he feels when playing it

Also as far as my experience is, will wood fandom isn't gatekeepy in the slightest and loves the discussions about the music :)

That's good to know. We joke about that, but obviously neither of us know near enough to properly make that kind of judgement. So far, most people in both of our Will Wood videos have been pretty cool 👍

Love to see your thoughts on, "In Case I Make It" because its kinda the polar opposite to this album with will on uke & baritone uke for the most part, stripped backed accompanyment, and is a lot slower paced.

Alright so gonna be slowly adding info in replies to this message, so first information I have is the reason for his hiatus. People thought since his 2 most recent albums had been more calm instead of lots of sounds all over they thought it was his “I got better” albums but he has said himself that they were his “it got worse albums” and he began his hiatus to help with his mental health (especially with the death of 2 of his pet rats then another (which was the basically the main one everyone knew) passed 3 days after his break began)

I’m pretty sure if you search you can find some of these with live version (suburbia overture is best for that cause it has the whole band rest or most likely solo)

Woah don’t you love laplace’s angel (lap-lace is how I pronounce it) laplace’s demon is basically a being that knows all events that have and will happen so yeah, and song is basically about “is someone capable of love while being morally evil”

Also quick fact: the band doesn’t use sheet music they just learn it once they make it
