    Its infuriating Govt reps are criticising nuclear energy for the perceived problem of the time it takes for the Govt to approve building plans. It takes less than five years to build a reactor if you follow Japan's lead of standardising components for manufacturing. Not everything has to be bespoke engineering (expensive and slow).

    The romance of nuclear for many A wet dream for a few old men. Facts. MWh from 3kg of uranium from 23tonne of uranium ore 3kg of uranium waste stored for 100years Australia grid electricity daily 25gW x 24hr is 600gWh x 365day is 220,000gWh maximum Max grid capacity. Is 10% of Australia's total energy used 25gW x 24hr is 10tonnes of uranium daily 7,000tonnes of uranium ore daily 10tonnes of radioactive uranium waste daily 2.5million tonnes of uranium ore yearly. 3,650 tonnes of radioactive uranium waste yearly 60years of production. 220million tonnes. Radioactive uranium waste. But the grid is extremely fragile and extremely expensive, $TRILLIONS, and electricity demand fluctuates 80%, impossible for nuclear electricity generation to follow. So nuclear promoters say 2% of Australia’s total energy to be nuclear and safe. But if 98% is not nuclear then 100% no nuclear is perfect.

    Will Shackel still does not understand the entire economic/social/security/industrial/atmospheric benefits of a nuclear power industry which can be far greater than all other existing sources of electrical energy generation and distribution. With nuclear power true carbon neutrality can be achieved and even a NETT NEGATIVE effect upon atmospheric carbon levels. In addition it could even vastly improve our country's balance of payments and export volumes across the entire spectrum of agriculture and manufacturing. To achieve a real NETT ZERO we need electrical power generation at levels beyond our current plans or the existing grid. Rather then adding additional generation to the grid in peak times it is better to simply balance the load demand between the consumer requirements and the remaining "COST/balance load" users. Cost users are government run desalination plants, (drought proofing the country or even greening it to provide more agricultural land as well as the water input for a synthetic oil industry that uses the waste biological carbon from increased agriculture and water the excess electricity generation). This synthetic hydrocarbon fuel would be carbon neutral because the atmospheric carbon cycle is closed. The main benefit would be to citizens who can drive ICE cars, use IC Air travel and Standard carbon fuel burning maritime transport FOREVER if necessary. Renewable power systems are fraught with high cost, short MTBF, large ecological footprint, lack of local manufacturing support, and a degree of fragility in harsh environments. The current electrical power generation model is over a century old and the idea of generating just enough to meet peak demand is based upon the maximum efficiency of a thermal power generation plant. A nuclear plant can be run at maximum efficiency with the excess power generated being used for environmental and societal needs which of course can be regulated through load shedding which is what the industrial and domestic customers suffer from when the grid is operating over its maximum capacity. As for the idea of a few massive power stations supplying our electricity needs, it is fine for the initial conversion of the existing power stations but from there the country would greatly benefit from large numbers of SMRs "MESHED" across the country which would massively decrease the requirement and cost of the "Poles and wires" which are effectively a redundant requirement, (DEAD MONEY/COST) with a fully meshed electricity grid system. (The mesh approach is best explained using the cellular phone service distribution model).

      The first solar cells were in the experimental stages in the late 1800's. It took until the 1950's for them to be introduced on a small scale commercially and the push began in earnest in the late 1990's. The have improved slightly in regards to capacity factor in that time but they just can't seem to get the sun to cooperate so the best they can do here in sunny Australia is to produce energy at twenty percent of their rated capacity on average over a year. Wind, as a way of producing useful energy or driving machinery has been around for hundreds of years and though significant engineering has gone into them in the past thirty years or so they too only work in this case if the wind is blowing. I can only speak for NSW because the government report put out regarding the average wind levels was in regards to this state. There are in fact hardly any areas in NSW that are suitable for wind turbines and this particular report made this blatantly clear. Of course they realised the huge gaffe they had made and reissued the report with different parameters. The fact is in a different report put out by the AEMO the total output from wind turbines across Australia was just thirty percent of nameplate capacity on average over a year. Wind and solar are not new technology and building more and more of it will not give you more energy. When the wind isn't blowing and the sun isn't shining you don't get any energy at all. Nuclear, coal and gas power plants have been engineered to provide power twenty four hour a day and many improvements on these technologies have occurred over the decades. They provide this power without the need for renewables. Renewables cannot possibly provide power twenty four hours a day without the need for coal, gas or diesel backup. Renewables are parasitic and it makes no sense to try to power a nation on the lowest density form of energy on the planet. And to have a dual system in place using higher density forms of energy on standby to supplement renewables is ludicrous.

      Renewables so far have cost $640 billion, and we are nowhere near net zero, and they also need replacing every 20 years. URANIUM ORE are needed to generate a MWh in a nuclear plant? Modern nuclear power plants operate on enriched uranium fuel. A surprisingly small amount of fuel is required to generate a great deal of electricity but it did not start out that way. Enriched fuel is created from uranium concentrate (U308 or "yellowcake") which itself is made from uranium ore. Only 6.8 pounds (3kg) of enriched uranium fuel is required to generate a gigawatt hour of electricity. But, to get that fuel, you need to start with ore that is 7,000 times larger, or almost 50,000 pounds of uranium ore to create the fuel for 1 Gwh of electricity. 23 tonnes uranium ore for 1 GWh of electricity Australia 25gW x 24hr is 600GWh daily. 23 tonnes x 600gWh is 14,000 tonnes daily. 365 is 5,000,000 tonnes per year 23t x 24hr x 25gW x 365 = 5,000,000 tonnes year For 10% of Australia’s total energy useage. And no population growth. x 10 for 100% of Australia’s energy 50,000,000 tonnes every year plus population growth. 6,600 tonnes of uranium waste. No problems here, Sarcasm alert. 😮

    well done mate. one point when asked about the grid upgrades for nuclear you could of said it would be less then cost of linking in renewables, considering that replacing coal with nuclear would be done mostly at sights with pre existing grid connections and any upgradesshould simply replace what is there without the need for taking more land. as for the NIMBY's discount their power they'll shut up quick, but only doit for people that perexist planing for the nuclear plant, to stop people cashing in.

  • @stephenbrickwood1602
    @stephenbrickwood1602 5 часов назад

    Uranium is dense but the grid to the customers is dispersed. I million km to 20million customers. The grid value at replacement cost or expansion costs is at $millions km. $TRILLIONS but is limited to transmitting only 25gW. This is only 10% of Australia’s total energy useage. Nuclear can not ramp down and load follow the grid demand. So nuclear promoters are saying only 2% of Australia’s energy usage can be possible as the grid ramps down 80%. Distant renewables have grid maximum limitations of 25gW Blackouts can be caused by over supply and under demand. Rooftop PV on the 20million roofs and the replacement of the 20million vehicles with battery vehicles, EVs, with v2g and their oversized battery and parked 23hrs every day is a perfect combination that can protect the national electrical grid. The grid itself is a $ TRILLIONS investment that the owners need customers $100sBILLIONS cashflow every year. Customers abandoning the grid electricity is a disaster for the owners and investors. This is the real problem. A small bit of nuclear electricity is an economic disaster and has no benefit stopping CO2 emissions worldwide and in Australia. Distant renewables have the same economic problem. Grid owners are terrified of lost cashflow and so increasing electricity costs to their remaining customers.

      Your statements have a tiny bit of truth mixed in with a massive amount of propaganda based falsehoods. Electricity is a matter of national security and defence capability. How many of those corporates which receive your concerns are interested in the population of Australia or even its very existence apart from them being a profit source? Imagine a smart network which is meshed and based upon SMRs distributed across the country. Each mesh is interconnected with its neighbouring mesh partners. Where a SMR is off line for any reason its customers are supplied from adjacent SMR mesh generation. As for rapid switching your argument is only valid for very large reactors whereas the small thermal latency in SMRs does allow for rapid/instantaneous output changes with NO detrimental effects upon the reactor or generation. The "Over supply and under demand" argument is a falsehood because the excess electrical power could be stored just as excess electrical power generation from ANY other source can be. With a meshed grid and besides with a future grid that generates 200% of the customer requirements any "DANGEROUS" power excess could be stored as in with renewables to allow for the reduce its excess generation OR the "Dangerous" excess could be channeled into environmental service such as driving desalination plants or even for use in a synthetic fuel industry removing carbon from the atmosphere. In addition Australia can and does export electrical energy. Cheap excess electrical energy could be exported to countries like PNG and even Indonesia. Just for reference, with nuclear there will be NO three eyed fish, No massive nuclear explosions, No Chernobyl type meltdowns, No natural disaster related loss of generation due to bush fire, cyclone, Flood or earthquake! The truth about nuclear energy is out there and do not compare the 1960s with today because there is no comparison just as there is no comparison between a 1900s electric vehicle and a modern Tesla. There is a technological answer to every one of your "ANTI-NUCLEAR" arguments. A MODERN Nuclear power meshed grid will allow for for less expensive, more reliable and safer electrical energy generation and distribution for everyone in Australia and even subsidised electricity for those who currently cannot afford to use grid electricity! Electricity like any other commodity is cheaper when it is available at greater quantity than demand the current model of the government makes electricity scarcer and so more expensive. Imagine the price in 20 years time when the wind turbines and solar panels need to be replaced totally across the entire continent!
