    I always wonder to what degree these songs were thought out in advance or if they were just jamming until they got something that sounds good.

    • @ThePopDescriptivist
      @ThePopDescriptivist 18 часов назад

      Probably a mix of both. I don't think you come up with something like 'Ontology' without at least some forethought. But a lot of the Huseyni-based songs, especially on the latter two albums, strike me as something that could have come from a jam.

    • @ThePopDescriptivist
      @ThePopDescriptivist 18 часов назад

      Good catch, I went back and listened and there is a variation as the guitar comes in, though it reverts to the original 13/8 pattern as the section continues. I'm not exactly sure it's alternating A and B, seems more like it's lining up with the guitar rhythm instead of the bass rhythm. I'll have to go back and listen more closely later.

    You did an insanely fantastic job here! So glad to see someone doing this. And doing it well. I’m a music theorist who has studied opeth for 20 years. You nailed section I. In section ii, i interpret this as a D octatonic scale (the lead plays half-whole and the rhythm part plays whole-half).

    • @ThePopDescriptivist
      @ThePopDescriptivist 3 дня назад

      I'm not sure I agree with you on section II. Ignoring that first transitional measure, the first part of the rhythm guitar riff plays Eb, D, and then C# - no octatonic scale contains those 3 notes together, so you pretty much need to take a 'changing scales' approach to make sense of it. That little lead guitar riff does technically fit into the half-whole octatonic scale, but it uses so few notes that you could just as easily fit it in, say, the Lydian dominant as well. And in most cases, I try to avoid explaining things using the octatonic scale unless it's really clear-cut and unavoidable, as I feel that it's harder to connect it clearly to aesthetic concepts. It can be bright or dark, functional or non-functional, it's like tofu - which can be useful, and Opeth do use it on other tracks, but here I feel like there's a better explanation.

    • @Wackyboombacky
      @Wackyboombacky 3 дня назад

      @@ThePopDescriptivist good point. There is also the C sharp and c at the end of the “rhythm guitar part” which doesn’t fit the Octatonic. This section is pretty tough to explain the “why” of the note choices and place into any particular scale. I do think that Mikael thinks “octatonic” on deliverance and ghost reveries. So I jumped to that here but it really doesn’t seem that way on this album and track.

    • @ThePopDescriptivist
      @ThePopDescriptivist 14 дней назад

      In principle yes; Swans is awesome. But their music is so textural and layered that I think it would be very hard to analyze it, at least using the typical approach(es) that I take in these videos. Usually the harmony is kind of vague, or is simple on paper with the richness coming from arrangement and timbre. Something for me to ponder, because there's a lot of similar artists like Bruce Lamont, Chelsea Wolfe, and New Age Doom whose music's simplicity belies something that I would analyze and emulate if I could.

  • @alexwilson2530
    @alexwilson2530 14 дней назад

    Great video, I got a lot out of it. Some less-educated questions: Why do we use Dm/F and not F6? The latter seems at least as elegant in this case. D#b6b5 is certainly more clunky than B7/D# but the former seems to capture the hefty D#-ness of that movement. Remember learning this on bass as a teenager and feeling like those low notes were really where the significance of those chord changes were.

    • @ThePopDescriptivist
      @ThePopDescriptivist 14 дней назад

      Great question. Coming up with a chord name is deceptively tricky and there's a lot of different factors which come into play. Sometimes there's multiple valid names, each of which might emphasize different elements of the chord's function or voicing, or purpose in the song overall. In this case, F and Dm are highly related chords. In fact, F6 and Dm7 share all the same notes, so if you see these notes together, you might rely on the bass note to determine the chord name. But the voicing also plays an important role - here, it is (from low to high) F D A D. There's no C, like would be a common low, non-root note in an F major chord (but is totally inessential to D minor), and the top 3 notes form a D5-like shape, emphasizing the D note, which is a color tone in the context of F major but a chord tone in D minor. Finally, the chord change from a more unambiguous C#m sounds more like a chromatic shift, where Dm would be the appropriate description. That said, F6 isn't exactly wrong per se, I just feel that it doesn't tell the reader of the chord chart about the chord's voicing or its context in the progression. With a slightly different voicing and context, F6 would be a good description. Like if you were in a jazz setting, and the notes were F D G A, and the previous chord was like a C7b9 or something. Here, treating this like an F major chord reflects a strong, typical V / I change (whereas V / vi, moving to D minor is less common when you have lots of chromatic tensions on the V), and it's more typical to see a dropped fifth in jazz voicings, so not having a C is less suspicious. I have a slightly different rationale for B7/D# - you were right that D#b6b5 is a clunky shape, but moreover it's not a particularly 'strong' chord identity. Certain note combinations will strongly indicate a particular chord regardless of the exact voicing. Like I told you to play a Csus4add6 (no 5), it would just sound like an F major, or perhaps Fmaj/C, even with C as a root note. Obviously, it's a matter of degree, but I think the dominant 7th with no 5th is a very strong identity. There is also less of a functional role for the D# (or Eb) as a root note for some kind of weird augmented chord in moving to the next chord, C#m. Hope this explanation makes sense.

    10:04, I think this is the little cymbal that Ambrose plays when there's no harmonica part and he hasn't got much else to do lol. Love the guy, but I suspect it's rhythmically "simple" (at least compred to Cavs' part) because he's just not a drummer. Good catch. I think it's still useful to show this cymbal on the same staff as the other drum parts; in my mind they occupy the same 'space' in the music, having similar timbres, which highlights the phasing effect I illustrate in the video.
