See now I saw that opening scene and thought: "oh dear, a 'trans-kid' self mutilating, wow, this was way ahead of it's time" thanks 2024 for turning me into a retard who sees old-ish stuff in modern fad terms
You nailed it with the thing about songs being transported back in time to the albums release. I don’t know how old you are, but one thing that was odd about owning the album right after release, was the fact that Ifresponsible Hate Anthem said that it was recorded live on a particular date in 1997. But the album came out in 1996. In his premadonna autobiography, he said that they were interested in remote viewing or mental time travel while they were writing it. So it makes sense that some tracks were meant to be live recordings that they. Fought back from the future. Pretty ballsy to guess they’d be filling stadiums in a year. Then again, maybe the music industry is completely controlled by what they decide to force down our throats and has nothing to do with what we all actually choose to like. Back then, 99% of us only heard the music that came out of our radios or MTV. Play it enough, and we will think that we like it. The reality is that people decide that they like a piece of music based on it doing what they expect it to do and sounding like stuff they’ve heard before. Maybe the folks in charge had already told them they’d be the next big thing.
Love this movie. Great video!
Some very interesting and thought-provoking comments made here. Do you think as well that Jay’s emasculation extends to his wife also being former military? It’s mentioned during the dinner party and also the weapons in the garage - one of which is a high powered assault rifle - was her purchase. Much of their domestic antagonism boils down to his inability to fulfil the standard role of the masculine breadwinner, and he is coy when visiting the GP when asked about their sexual life. Jay is a man whose impotency - both physical and metaphorical - is channelled into extreme acts of violence.
thoughtful analysis
Play begotten sn marilyn Manson's antichrist superstar album at temhe same time it syncs up beautifully
Weird film. Good breakdown and analysis. Thank you
Hmm that’s what I thought as well, even Nietzche. It always comes back to Nietzche with everything lol. It seems to simple to connect God dying and Mother Earth taking his place more or less, I thought for sure it had a more profound meaning. I have never watched the movie just a quick recap on it. I don’t want to believe in the nihilistic view but the more I think on it you are probably right. As time goes on, our Gods die, and we replace them with new ideas. I just feel as if I’m missing something with God doing what he does to himself. The puzzle would be much clearer if others did that to him, not him doing that to himself, it shakes things up for me in my head.
I always kick myself for not paying attention more in school. I wish i could break down movies and books intellectually like you. You’re lucky. Good video.
School is the worst place to cultivate this skill.
Great video, some good analysis on a film with alot of questions. Killlist might not be a Popcorn Classic, but it's certainly a 5-Bagger.
I like your video, very good
Good job
I can’t get past the fact that neither his wife nor his son’s mouths were gagged or covered. Why wouldn’t one of them have just said “stop! It’s us”? She wasn’t blinded by the mask anymore than he was. Surely she knew her only husband with a crude mask on.
do you still have the one without the text? Leaving that out would make it better
Trent Reznor deserves just as much credit, IMO..
I know this channel has been inactive for 2 years but please consider doing more music analysis. I promise your channel would do well after a few album breakdowns.
This was a phenomenal breakdown. To see that it's 2 years old and under 10k views makes no sense.
This is beautifully done ❤ I still listen to A.S. everyday🖤
Interesting take. However, everybody only ever tries to explain the evil plan of the cult and sticks to the movie's events rather literally. That's only the surface story. My theory - and surprisingly I have never found any reviewer or article talk about it - is this: What really happens is fairly simple: Jay is a traumatized var veteran. He has anger-management issues and violent outbursts, suffers from depression. PTSD patient so to speak. Over some fight, he kills his wife and kid and his best friend. That's it. The whole movie plot with the cult and all is only the "justification" he makes up in his mind to justify his horrible deeds. Some form of vision or dream. Come to think about it: In several scenes in the movie, people tell him to WAKE UP! Most of the scenes have an eerie, dream-like quality to them. Every victim Jay kills, is grateful, thanking him. They are all portrayed as evil people who have committed hideous crimes and deserve to die. This is just Jay's way of trying to justify his actions and keep his moral code intact. Gal even asks him to put him out of his misery. His wife seems to be laughing after he stabs her in the end. None of this would make any sense in real life. The cult is Jay's way of showing, that he had no choice but to kill. That he was orchestrated by a higher force to do it. That it was all just a great conspiracy over which he had no control. When he is crowned in the end, he basically succumbs to or embraces his mental illness.
Good take. The wife laughing at the end confused me but make sense in your explanation.
I really like this take.
Love this
But saying the whole thing is imagined doesn't explain much - neither the core notion of the Arthurian cult, nor the animal symbolism nor any of the key events. Ask yourself, why did Wheatley included the scene where Jay got blood poisoning from the client's knife? Ask yourself, what might happen to such a person? But you're right in one sense, there is no cult, you just cut to the 'delusion' too early.
The second studio album? It was their third album. Smells like Children was terrible and it was all covers and remixes. So I guess it doesn't really count? Antichrist had some real bright spots. It promissed of good stuff to come. But it never did. Manson imploded. To me Portrait was their peek. Marilyn Manson was a band then. And the members were talented and full of vision and the most unique sounds. But one by one they all fell away until Marilyn Manson became the stage name of a solo act. He's a great front man. Great lyricist. Amazing artist. He has a lot to contribute. But he's weak musically. He's not a composer. I know people love Beautiful People but it's just him whispering "beautiful people" and moaning "uuuuuuuuuhhhh" over two chords. There's no song in there. Every track on Portrait is brutal and dark and bizarre. It was a compltely new sound. People tend to compare it to industrial and that's the only thing that comes close but it's not really that. It's new. Btw, industrial is basically heavy electronic music. Electronic music is a different way of making music. It doesn't require technique as much as it requires programming skills and studio trickery. When electronic musicians are insired by louder, heavier genres, metal, punk, that's industrial.
Smells like children is a ep, not a lp. Do you count Remix and Repent as an album😂
@@shannongerbes They call it an EP for whatever reason but it had 16 songs and total running time was nearly an hour. An EP traditionally is around 5 to 8 songs or so and runs about a half hour. But the word "album" just refers to the book like structure that contains collection of media. One might have a photo album. Or an album for stamps. It's usually associated with a 12 inch vinyl and the limitations inherent in the medium but now in the digital age, that notion is being stretched further and further. Most vinyl albums have 10 - 12 songs. This one has 16. So you can call it whatever makes sense to you. it's subjective. But it seems to me that any studio production longer than a single ought to be considered a release and should show up on a list of albums by that artist. You wouldn't have a separate category for double albums so why should you for EP's?
band got worse after daisy left. all of the soul of the album was in daisys writing. he wrote a lot of the songs on antichrist superstar, manson didn’t give him credit for most
@@valentinelovesyou_.38 I agree. I loved me some Manson. I'm from Fort Lauderdale. But over time I just lost interest.
But does he kill his wife? And why does she laugh?
Is it a coincidence that the leader of the cult looks like sleazy Biden
I love this album, definitely one of my top 5 rock albums of all time! I hope you create a video about Mechanical Animals, Holy Wood and The Golden Age Of Grotesque!
This film kicks ass man
Sorry, you did refer to the domestic violence. My apologies
Sorry, I meant Jay and his wife.
You miss the first act of violence:the row between Gary and his wife.
Thank you for making this
Smells like children came before antichrist superstar, not portrait
Thank God - a normal analysis, and not someone using cringeworthy, unscripted, Wikipedia paraphrasing. Wonderful review, and summed up my thoughts of the film pretty well. Cheers, mate, you’re a drop in the ocean of bullshit, hackney reviewers. :)
Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood next!
It looks like you havent made a new video in a long time but I hope you do again one day, love your work
Came here as an immediate fan of the film after watching it, and thought your take was so interesting and nothing I'd seen in other reviews and analyses. Definitely subscribing and digging through your content for more intelligent and nuanced insight!
You make mention of the reflecting god sounding like it was recorded in the future and dropped into the album….well f I remember right the opening track irresponsible hate anthem in the liner notes says it was recorded live in 1997, a year after the album came out in Oct 1996.
it’s implied that irresponsible hate anthem is a look into the future. a preview of what’s going to happen
Excellent analysis 😁
RUclips obviously doesn't appreciate art
Hey brother! Saw this in my recommended so I had to check it out. Amazing analysis!
I read an interview on the internet where Mehrige said that he was in a car accident with his brother where he ended up in a coma. During his coma, Mehrige said that he had a series of weird bizarre dreams and those dreams also inspired some of the visuals of Begotten. That's just what I read though.
He should have stuck with Trent,
One of the biggest piles of shite ice ever seen.
Great analysis x
not 2nd
Very deep, insightful analysis, great job. The Man That You Fear video was also inspired by the short story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson.
Honestly lots of useful cool info & Im sure it took tons of work ...... but it feels Rushed, not allowing hardly any moment for the listener to catch their breath so to speak. The info can become overwhealming & lose its feel & potency if it never slows down to allow most listeners to stay along for the ride.
antichrist superstar is INCREDIBLE. The PEAK. the BEST imo
Man that you fear is INCREDIBLE
I think on Demography ........John Davie from Korn sang I think. You can clearly hear him on several lines.
moving a bit too fast. cant even read whats up on the screen.
You should come back and to Mechanical Animals. i really enjoyed this!
please do a vid like this for Rammstein
