I used to pay an indie to do my maintenance. Due to lack of tools. Decided to invest in tools over last couple years and they paid off big time. Have a 2000 FXSTB and I had a piece of the rear shoe in the chest just laying there. Decided I don't want to do this, went to dealer here in Cheyenne, they would work on it, amazingly enough, a buddy took his in a couple years ago, a 99, and they said they would NOT work on it due to over 2006, so HD must be losing customers for them to agree to work on mine. Pissed me off, I just wanted the tensioners replaced and inner cam bearings. Not only did they quote 2.5 hours for the bearings, they tried to talk me into hydraulic tensioners, is that a good idea? Of course, but I just wanted to spend the least amount of money to finish out the riding season and then do that job next spring. So I went home, priced out the bearing puller and tensioner tools, sub $300.00...so watched YT vids and read my shop manual and was like, shit, I can do that myself, I have all the tools now. So now my cam chain tensioners with bearings and new shoes (went Cyco Gaskets shoes and reused the spring tensioners) was sub $500.00. I now have so much more confidence to work on my bike. Just changed the rectifier as it went out. Now I do all the work on my bike, I enjoy it (mostly)...ok, rant over.

I really enjoyed your video and thank you for it. You confirmed what I already believed. The only thing I would disagree with (and this is a technical issue) is about the early Twin Cam 88 chain tensioners. Harley had claimed that they had tested the Twin Cam motors for over a million miles if I remember correctly. They claimed it was an improvement over the Evo. No mention was ever made of any problems with the cam chain tensioners in all of that testing. Soon after the Twin Cams began having warranty claims for the adjuster shoes disintegrating and ruining motors with less than 15,000 miles, all of a sudden Harley Davidson makes checking the cam chain adjusters part of “regular maintenance”. Now to me, that is not what most people would consider regular maintenance. Checking tire pressure, changing oils and filters, chains and belts are regular maintenance. Not many owners would want to get inside the cam cover to “inspect” those adjuster shoes every 15,000 miles. Oh, and after the problem was discovered, it was then that Harley says that they have an updated hydraulic adjuster! The problem wasn’t really the manner of tension. The problem was the shoes falling apart. Then to add insult to injury, Harley also says, While you’re inside the cam chest, you should upgrade the oil pump as well!!! I’m like you, I love Harley Davidson motorcycles but it’s sad to say that I don’t care for the corporate greed and the way they have insulted their customers intelligence. A million miles of testing and THEY never had a cam chain adjuster shoe failure???? I guess that just happened to the people that bought them. And I believe that the Twin Cam is a great motor except for that 1 single issue.

When riding a bike on roads, you have to ride like you’re invisible you can never ride assuming cars are seeing you and giving you the right of way.

As a new rider and I say that because I only had my motorcycle license for three years and just traded my little Honda Rebel 300cc for a Harley Nightster 975cc which to be honest I am a little intimidated by her because she's so much more powerful so my husband who's been riding since the 70s is riding her while I been riding his 883 Sportster to get used to a heavier more powerful bike , safety is the main concern about the traffic because people pull out in front of you like this woman did with these bikes , not paying attention texting, day dreaming and so on ,I just hope and pray everyone who were injured fully recovered proof right here riding in traffic open road is nothing like riding on a course doing top speed 20 miles an hour in the academy class at Harley Davidson and understandable why the coaches can be hard on you like my husband is with me at times..

As a biker myself. Please.. please wear proper protective gear! There is plenty of gear that is comfortable in all types of weather. A helmet alone will raise your survival chances by 80% in a accident.

Dude, if HD is a defining characteristic of your lifestyle...congratulations, you have bought a pre packaged identity and forfeit your individuality.

A very sad situation! I've ridden motorcycles for roughly 27 years and I'd like to point out an observation without placing fault. Riding in a true staggered formation will give you more space and that gives you more reaction time. It deeply annoys me when people don't hold formation and and ride side-by-side. I need an escape route in case someone in front of me does something dangerous or silly!

In today’s world, if you know how to check your oil level, you’re considered a mechanic by 99% of people. That should explain a lot about why America is in the current situation we are in.

Packs need to ride tighter or create very large quarter mile gaps

I stopped riding in groups decades ago for this very reason. Not enough people know how to ride in groups, if you got a problem ahead of you and can't stop you're riding to close to the bike in front

When I rode bike I always had a helmet, full gear bright neon yellow and or white helmet , lights on and I always assumed that no one could see me and that everyone was out to kill me. Kept me from blaming the idiots on the road and from ever real having a close call.

Twin cam chain tensioner is garbage and a very poor design. Glad I never bought one.

I got yelled at over a comment I made to a Harley guy. He was talking about how lucky he was to finally find a Harley mechanic that he could trust and depend on. I commented that I did not need a good mechanic because I drive a Honda.

Shoot I recommend if you are in ohio or surrounding states come check out thunder on the strip. Good time alot of nice riding in that area.
