Garage Door "How To" proper way to weigh your door #diy #tutorial #diyproject
Today I talk about weighing your Garage Door to order the right torsion spring. Sometimes your door is heavy like a rock at the bottom or Fast like a rocket at the top of the opening. What does this mean. You probably have the incorrect torsion spring. You want your door to balance and work smoothly from open to close. A improper balanced door will wear your garage door opener out faster and can be just dangerous to use by hand. We use the door weigh, drum size (there is a number on the drums) size of the door to determine the correct spring. Disclaimer the tension must be off the springs, either by using a winding bar to backwind the spring. In my case the spring was already broken.#diy ...

He's going to go ahead...alot.
You are the Master thanks😊
Excellent lesson. I learned a lot. Thank you.
My garage door is crooked I have two springs on this 20 ft garage door and they seem to have different torsion bars one of them is distort one of the cable broke and the doors tweaked and I think it's because one of the torsion bars has got tension in the other has it. Do I need to carefully relieve the tension on the one bar before I go Forward ❓
What's a great video too bad the sound sucks
Cant thank you enough , doing this on my own
thank you ....
Thank you! straight, clear instruction!
Firstly you are standing inside the danger zone. You need to stand on the right of the right spring & left of the left spring.. The way you have positioned your ladder is also incorrect.
How about explaining to everyone why his latter is positioned incorrectly? So as to be helpful and not just making know it all feeling comments. and also maybe one or two reasons why we should stand to the right or left of the Spring? Thanks and appreciate you possibly saving some us a trip to the ER
Just Subscribed for your Safety glasses advice......👍👍 Some instructors just don't do it 👎👎
The fools that installed the garage door at my Fathers is so heavy to lift That at 6'4" finish carpenter I have use all I have to open it without electric. Thank you. Gonna go get those winder rods (not because I have such a pretty face) and balance Dad's door
My door fully opens just above the door opening (correct position for fully open) but as soon as the motor stops, the door retracts about 8 inches. Is this due to insufficient tension in the torsion spring or is the chain too loose? Thanks.
Thank You for your message. I would say that door needs some more tension. It is easy to test. Close your door with your opener. When it's fully closed use your manual release on your opener and trying opening your door by hand. It should stay fully open. If it doesn't not just get a set of winding bars and some visor grips and add 2 quarters and retest. If you add too much remove one quarter and retest. Your door should stay open half open and fully open. If you find that your door is heavy on the floor and fast when fully open. Then tension is not your issue. You have the wrong torsion spring. Hope this helps.
Thank you!!
Awesome and to the point!
Don’t go ahead and do, just do!
what about garage doors with 2 springs
I would like to know the answer to this also. Is it the same basically accept for testing should be done after both are equally tightened?
Wind both springs the correct number of turns based on the height of the door. Test after winding the second spring
Great info. One tip is Get a clip on mic. Too much echo in that garage makes it had to understand you. Thanks for the info..:)
Thank you for the tip!
Hello, Thanks for your post. I am replacing the current cable that is 8' 6" or 101". What size cable should I buy? 8' or 9' feet.. Thank you for any help
Thank you for your response James. you should be a cable that is 8'6" in length which is for a 7' high garage door. However you could also instead a 9'6" cable as well. the longer cable may require you to add 2 more quarters or 1/2 turn to balce your door. Thanks Darren
very stylish safety glasses---do you recall the source???
Thank You for your response cwncwn-sg4ke.I love those glasses. They keep most of debris out of your eyes. I bought them from a Local supplier and I might add them to my website. Thanks Darren
Door too hot on the top.
Keep your fingers away from set screws. Also, looks like spring is oiled so you don't need to stretch it out too much.
Using drummer sticks works just as good as the metal rods to adjust tension spring. They fit in holes perfectly.
Yeah I would trust drummer sticks over a metal rod any day
You can come my house fix
