Cover comb shearing - november 2024, Norway
Here is a long video of me shearing this november.
Uncut, unedited to see exactly what I do.
1st hour from the front, 2nd from the back, even though I was out of frame a few times.
I'm shearing with a cover comb due to the temperature (+2°C) so I'm going pretty easy, really only the last sheep is somewhat fast.
These are crosses between NKS (Norwegian white), hvit spæl (white shorttail) and Scottish blackface, with no rhyme nor reason, so I have to adapt the blows from one animal to the next. Some even had matted wool so yet another reason to take it easy.

Blade shear. Swedish Ryafår (Rya sheep), lamb.
I've recently started to get serious with my blade shearing, and this is a video from this fall. This is a female lamb and I was shearing it mostly to practice, hence the time it takes to do the job. Rya being one of the North Atlantic shorttail breeds presents a double fleece (both wool and kemp), and is quite challenging to work with. It's also quite skinny as a kind of sheep having been bred...
Norwegian Dala sheep ram - may 2023
Dala is one of the less common breeds in Norway nowadays, and they are getting less and less. Originally developed to get a large sheep with middle quality wool through the interbreeding of Norwegian white spæl and British Leicester and Cheviot (www.nsg.no/sau/saueraser/sauerasene-i-norge) (reinrasasau.com/). They are pretty large, with heavy bones and a very mild attitude. They are generally q...

How to operate the reeling machine
In this video I want to show the procedure to operate the reeling machine, i.e. a fairly old piece of machinery that draws the yarn from the spools and into reels. In this case I'm working with 20 spools and making 100g reels, which I then bind in bunts of 10. The bunts will then be washed again and packed, ready for shipping. For those who wonder this is white Norwegian spælsau, and we spun th...
Gammalnorsk Spælsau full wool prelamb - march 2022
This is one of the slowest jobs of the year. The fleece is very sticky, very heavy and doesn't comb that well. In the past decades they have been bred mostly for size, and the fleece quality has plummeted. The great amount of dead and marrow hair they present now is therefore a big challenge when working with them. Efforts are being made now to improve fleece quality, and hopefully eliminate ba...
Mohair Goat
This is the fourth ever mohair I shore, so there's surely plenty of mistakes I'm doing. Also I was lifting the comb all the time since I wasn't really sure about wrinkles and so on. I found that the usual technique does work, with the addition of shearing the front legs the first thing you do. Likewise I decided to shear the neck from either side, like a merino, on account of all the loose skin...
Norwegian white shorttail - hvit Spælsau. Mainshear
The white shorttail is becoming increasingly popular in Norway due to its many advantages over the white crossbreed (norsk kvit sau, NKS). It has lower fertility, and rarely exceeds 3 lambs; it also requires less care during lambing and gives birth to lively and alert lambs. Lately it has been bred for size in accordance to market needs, but it is originally a wool breed. Like many north Europe...

Shearing texel lambs in Sweden
Texel is a good breed to work with. The lambs are a very good size and are nice and round. No bones to catch you comb on. Their drawback is the fact that they can be quite jumpy, and you really have to be careful with control during shearing. Furthermore they have very tight wool (similar to a Suffolk) which can contain quite a bit of lanolin. I had run out of long bevel combs so I was forced t...
Klövsjöfår - Swedish heritage breed
Shearing another of the many heritage breeds that are to be found in Scandinavia. They have mostly fine wool, with wool hair somewhere around 20 micron and kemp hair from 30 to 40. Adult individuals (like the one in the video) weigh anything between 50 and 70 kg, and come in many colours. This is another of the short tailed scandinavian breeds, and is as such related to the Spælsau found in Nor...

Solid vs flexi - which drive should you choose?
In this video I try to explain the main differences between solid drives and flexi drives. Even though the solid is the most used by professionals, a flexi drive may be handy in situations where you need to adapt more. Small flocks or low ceilings for example, or any time setting up a proper solid drive is impractical. Of course the flexi comes with certain disadvantages, most notably the loss ...

Wasn't there a way of grinding without paper, using a coarse lathed cast iron disc and grinding abrasive applied directly to the disc?
That's news to me! But if you know anything about it do tell, I'm always curious about different ways to do things!
@@gbsklipperi6617 Cast Iron disc with coarse profile and grit directly applied on that disc. I did not find a good video - could be that this shorty is without paper - at least it sounds that way. ruclips.net/user/shortsjSIQgbwoFBc?feature=share I assume it was the older technique bevore emery paper was glued to the discs. But only an assumption. Ask what elderly shearers in Sverige say - maybe they know about. In Germany sometimes it is used today yet. Would be nice you could reply what you found out.
The hooves are always cut after shearing the sheep, because there is a great possibility that the sheep will injure you with the edge of the cut hoof during shearing!
Yeah I know. I only did this one ram as a favour to the farmer really...
@@gbsklipperi6617 Ok
It's fascinating to watch the sheep shearing, but listening to the little lambs in the audio stole the show.
They are very cute when they are small ;)
A pedicure before a good shear.. awesome 🐏
I’ve never seen a sheep with a tail like that. Good work!
Thanks! Dala is a crossbreed between old short tailed Norwegian sheep and long tailed British ones, so it has a long and thick tail. Also, docking is forbidden here so we have to shear all the long tails :/
I imagine the further north climate would reduce the incidence of flystrike; even in the mountains in the UK, most hill breeds are not docked because the longer tail helps keep their backsides warmer during the winters on the mountains.
@@patpierce4854 yeah, it's less common here. But the weather has been getting warmer every year so who knows!
Too much fur, bad owner...
I beg to differ, this is one year's worth. I can promise you that since I shore this very ram last year too. The animal protection law in Norway requires shearing once a year lovdata.no/dokument/NL/lov/2009-06-19-97?q=Dyrevernlov
It’s so satisfying to watch them lose all that fleece!
And I promise they are happier afterwards!
Good sheep
Very helpful video, thank you. Is this the basic Horner handpiece? Do you still use it, or have you traded up?
Any time :) No this was a supershear, I think. I don't actually use oilbath handpieces, this was mostly to show how to service one
Good shearer
Not getting much fur for the size. ok or for the meat. Usa
Well, this is really a bigger version of the old shorttail, and as such it's related to the Shetland breed. It isn't originally bred for size but for the quality of the fleece. It namely has a double fleece with kemp hair that can reach 25cm in length (in a year - these are shorn twice a year). Up until the early 2000 the focus from breeders was lengthy and lustre wool, plus ease of care. Nowadays however people are trying to get them bigger and bigger, to bring it up to par with the Norwegian white crossbreed (NKS), so we are left with something in between. Not really the best for wool, not really the best for meat. I don't particularly like them either 😅
Here in Auss thin combs come in to their own with shearing lousey merinos and for crutching very dirty sheep .R
Thanks for the answer, always good to learn something new!
Thank you for a thorough explanation
Any time! I'm always in doubt whether it's of any use to anyone, but it's good to know it's appreciated!
Hej.

Hi I’m getting back in to shearing again here in Sweden. I have ordered a new evo 3 and have a old soliddrive with a button to lock it in the machine. But the new motors use a clamp. What I’ve seen there is a clamp kit / adapter for the old solids. Do they work good or should I go for a new solid drive ?
Hi, if you think something like this: www.hornershearing.com/acatalog/heiniger-quick-clamp-kit.html Then I can say it does work for old machine + new tube. But in case the issue is the downtube then maybe you need to remove part nr 2 from this diagram: www.hornershearing.com/acatalog/Heiniger-Solid-Driveshaft-Spares.html I haven't tried this myself though so I'm not too confident in telling you what works. If you want I'll be in värmland a couple of times this month, write to me on Facebook so maybe you can take your gear over and I can take a look. Otherwise you welcome to visit in Oslo, where I live :)
Vilket hantverk!!!
Gud så bra du klipper Gb,mvh Lena Nylander
I like the POV vantage point. Would you choose a different comb next time?
Yes for sure, even though when the wool is that yellow I find that it's a drag whatever I do. Maybe a cover comb, as crazy as it sounds
You're a very skilled shearer. Had a dancy Icelandic stand up on me twice the other day. Thank you for sharing. Appreciate your videos and great instruction very much. Was this fall shearing for this Gotland? Thanks again.
Well thank you :) I believe this was early spring actually. Yeah some native breeds up here are pretty jumpy! Can I ask if there is anything you'd like to hear about that maybe I haven't explained yet?
