We are still getting tremendous views of the kits at dawn and dusk whilst they are staying near the lodge. Soon they will get more adventurous and Mother will let them go further into the habitat.
It's fascinating watch them play, learn and eat. There is already a hierarchy amongst them and certainly behave just like children.
They only eat leaves and the odd plant as their teeth are not developed enough to cut into branches. I did see that they are orange like the adults. This is the iron in the enamel which makes the teeth so strong. It looks as though they are still getting milk from the Mother, judging by her teats.

This is always the time I look forward to - the first appearance of this year's kits in light. They spend their first weeks in the lodge before venturing out. Some recent Dawn sightings. The Beavers are showing pretty well now at dusk and dawn. Patience and a bit of luck are well rewarded during these longer daylight hours of Summer. The Beavers are a tight family group, one of last year's kits is still very much attached to Mother. The recent bloom/algi on the water does not bother the beavers and has now disappeared with the latest rain. Simon Hurwitz

Sometimes you can really close to the Beavers and feel you are on intimate terms with them. It's amazing to see those teeth, 2 up, 2 down. They constantly grow and are self sharpening. If allowed to grow they would be 4 feet long in a year. The orange colour comes from iron in their tooth enamel which is only on the front.
