WINSOR & NEWTON COTMAN vs DALER-ROWNEY watercolour review and comparison

This video was a fun one, these two brands are the main student grade paints you'll see around in New Zealand and are pretty standard. Defiantly has filler in them and not as reliable as professional but great if you want to upgrade from the much cheaper quality paints. Although they're surprisingly expensive and it might be better to get a couple professional watercolour tubes over a set of th...

Amy Tangerine Watercolour Set Review
Hullo Elvie, I love this aspect of RUclips! I get to visit countries all over the world without leaving my home! You show a place in New Zealand that even if I were to visit I doubt it is even on the local tourist routs! Seeing a country through the eyes of people who live there is the best part of watching Artists create landscapes of their countries! We have some bushes here in Northern California called Manzanita and I simply have not seen it anywhere else! It has medicinal properties that the local tribes have used for centuries! Elvie? If you are experiencing any troubles mixing greens to be bright enough you might try rinsing then wiping your brush before going into the yellow pan. I have taught a few classes and cross contamination in mixing is always a problem. Stroking a color twice one time then again and not getting a similar result is frustrating! getting the same color when mixing does take practice, but good practice is important too. Having an extra cloth on your leg or extra paper towel to blot or dab your brush on to clean it can really make mixing so much easier and consistent. I know this is unsolicited and Please feel free to ignore me as this turned out to be a lovely example of this scene! Truly a beautiful painting. Thank you for sharing it and your time with us!
@@mjpete27 I do love seeing interesting areas all over the world through painting it's so special!
Hullo Elvie, It is nice to see older videos that hold up! Tastes change and art supplies do too! I have tried every major watercolor paint brand and I believe that ANY of the professional brands will last and allow you to create wonderful paintings. That said, I do know I like some more than most! and One while it has the most color choices and a fairly good reputation, I would never buy, recommend, or use Daniel Smith products ever again! I never hesitate to say so either! I have and use DaVinci paints the most! I love A.Gallo handmade paints, I have sets of Sennelier, M.Graham, Holbein, Mijello Mission Gold, QoR, Even a small set of Schmincke as they are very expensive! Some brands do some things better/easier than others, but ALL will allow you to create wonderful paintings. I am glad to have found your channel and I look forward to watching your Art journey!
@@mjpete27 Yes! So so true, most professional brand will be incredible for anyone but branding, ethical factors and more really help limit the choices down! A Gallo is definitely on my list to look into!
Hullo Elvie, I did enjoy your flip through. I was taught that sketchbooks are planning tools for future art pieces. Now they are practically works of art in and of themselves! I saw several pages I believe would make really lovely larger art pieces! Take the last picture it is a wonderful study piece for a larger painting. Now no need to go gigantic, but going from the small page up to a 9x12 watercolor block would be a significant leap! I would love seeing you to that! I have made that jump up and I was even encouraged to go even bigger once I made the jump from sketchbook to 9x12 to 11x17 to a 22x30 a full watercolor sheet! Up scaling your art works is not something mandatory but it can open doors and bring in more money and that was a key for me in deciding to work on my art full time. These days no one "needs to" go big. You can make money just creating videos! branching out creating more than one revenue stream is what can keep you going these days! I do hope you think of this comment as encouragement, not criticism! Please keep creating and sharing your art journey, I loved it when you showed the pieces done by others in your book, truly encouragement on the most personal scale!
@@mjpete27 I do love doing larger scale works but they take up a fair bit of space over the work bence, I've got an A5 sketchbook for my next one and an A4 too! It's definitely so important to try different scales and play around, I loved sketchbooks as a way to capture parts of my life and interests!
I 1000% agree that Denise's Earth Friendly set with Da Vinci is what made me fall in love with their watercolors. I've been using it for 2 years now with some add ons (their New Gold and Perylene Red are gorgeous).
They are! so smooth to use and I don't need to stress over if they're going to act weirdly
Awesome
thanks bub x
Thank you... 😊 God bless you as you continue your journey in 2025!!! I too like Da Vinci and have favorites I placed in an empty palette together!!! (From different brands) With love from a California Gramma ❤️
Thank you very much:))) Glad you enjoyed the video!
Hullo Elvie, I thought I would just comment before you finished before I forgot what I was going to say! I think you might enjoy some paints better if they were in a better palette! I say mix some brands! Put your Mijello paints in with the Dan Smith. This will elevate both of paints and allow more mixes to shine through. I might suggest more Rosa Gallery paints over the Roman Szmal. I like that they sell in full pans and be sure to get the gallery and NOT the studio line. I will say a chalky finish usually comes from excessive fillers. I do not remember what brand that was . . . . I enjoy your videos and your paintings are truly lovely! The only sure way to find the paint you want to live with forever is to USE THEM! I may be repeteing myself, but when I came back to traditional painting methods I picked Mijello and for a while I was ok but just not finding any real JOY in my work. I was sure I was just out of practice I tried Dan Smith but ran into a buzz saw of troubles with three different customer service people, so I swore to NEVER use ANY art supplies from that company again and I have NOT! You know I found DaVinci, So Well enough! I am glad to see you posting in the new year and keep painting!
yeah, I want to get some better tins for them but they're a bit out of budget at the moment so as I use up paints I plan to shift them round a bit hopefully! I definitely haven't been able to give them all a fair go get for sure.
@@ElviesArt what you can do for a budget palette that might work for you is buy an empty magnetic eyeshadow palette and then just buy the empty eyeshadow magnetic tins, and this is very similar to the Art. Took it, but much cheaper as you can get like a pack of 30 of the 10 squares for 20 bucks and you can get the magnetic eyeshadow pallets empty for about $10 and then you can make up your own
I also use empty pencil tins or go to op shop’s and just get some and a little bit of blue tack or a magnet at the bottom and then you can create your own stuff
@@ElviesArt I am so aware of the cost of the quality Art supplies! I made do with “hand me downs” for so many years, in fact I was recently given a gift from the daughter of a friend who’s mother had passed away and she had no interest in watercolors at all! I did pick out one of her well used palettes and filled it with 24 full pans of paint and gave her back a Christmas present to remember her Mom and should she ever want to start to paint, she was all set. I just love the way watercolors last! They work well dried out and will re-wet years after being poured into pans! Yes, I included a set of 5 essential synthetic brushes. One was from the gift and was brand new! Paper is a trickier item as if stored poorly the sizing will go bad and the expensive quality paper causes more frustration than joy. I did write a nice note to contact me if she wanted a paper recommendation or just a pad of paper! I certainly have plenty!
@@jessbutterfly1934I heard the eyeshadow pans may rust.
In the past Lukus brand had a lot of fugitive colour blends
yeah, I've heard mixed reviews about them, I forgot to specify its the 1862 line of theirs btw!
Aqua Green is a unique new colour used in the car industry. It doesn't have a pigment number yet. It has a name I forget ...Turquoise and is a single pigment.
@@debbrantstevens8826 really appreciate the information about it, that's so cool!!!
Left handers are awesome.🤗
hehe of course;))
Hullo Elvie, Nice to see you starting out the year with a video! I find it very brave to take on a psychical item! I find senics or landscapes far easier to make up! I think your doing a grand job with these paints, well done by YOU! I am just wondering if you do all of your editing on your phone? It kinda sounded like you do, from this video, Oh Man that is a very hard thing to do! Thanks for posting a lovely painting of your kiwi mug/cup!
Thank you! yeah I found a random site were I cut and paste parts of the video together but to make it easier and more enjoyable for myself I avoid heavy editing. Glad you enjoyed the painting, I quite like painting objects to mix it up, a good way to get some easy inspo!
Nice demo & review. 👍 It's odd how set B costs almost 2x that of Set A. Such is life. Happy New Year!
Really? It was cheaper then set A when I bought it! I found that quite random honestly. Glad you enjoyed the video:))
Im in NZ too and a paint set i was ordering from Jacksons the postage was going to be $48 so i didn't order. I got from Adamstown for $13 postage. I was just wondering if thats where u get your paints from.
That's crazy! I got mine from Jacksonsart UK postage for me is usually between 10-20 $. Weird how much it went up for you, that's frustrating. The reason I found Jacksons great was because of the affordable shipping. I haven't heard of Adamstown before I'll check that out:))
Hi! This 12 set is really good for mixing. Even that emerald green you did not like makes really good mixes when added to yellows or blues. Mix it with magenta for a purplish neutral. Like you, I came to gouache through watercolour. It was difficult to let go of the transparent way of painting to embrace gouache 's opacity. The challenge with gouache is getting the water / paint ratio right. Trust the opaciy 😊.
Yes absolutely! Such a nice way of getting a set of quite a few different colours of gouache, I don't often see larger gouache sets out their. They work great with my 5 set of Holbein gouache, thank you for the info about the mixes! Very handy. Gouache is a very fun median once you've got your head round it.
I love this set . I bought a half pan set of the whole collection on Aliexpress. They are all gorgeous.
Daniel Smith is definitely an incredible watercolour brand, very reliable stuff!
Just bought this set on a special buy from Eckersley's (Australia). I haven't undertakeren any art for about 4 years, but before that was working exclusively in large pastel portraits (approx 55 x 72 cm). After 4 years of excessively hard work, I finally have 4-5 weeks of leave. A snap find of a brilliant book about watercolour painting one week ago, set off this almost obsessive compulsive RUclips hunt on Watercolour portraiture. So, I've bought my set of W&N's 46 pans. I had to go to RUclips to work out how to open the blinking thing, because it JUST WOULDN'T OPEN. Personally, I find the set to be very "CHEAP" looking. I have an original W&N watercolour black tin set from, I think, maybe the 1910's-1920's, which was given to me by my grandmother. 30 years ago, I had some sales assistants in an art shop offer me a ridiculous sum of money for the empty set. I used to keep my pastels in the black tin set (I now have so many pastels, I require a MUCH larger arrangement.) I haven't unwrapped any of the pans and was disappointed by the size, from the website, they appeared much larger (and I too share your disappointment with the amount of plastic). And then, I will need to be "Anally Rententive" and glue the name of each colour below each pan, so I remember the colour I am using (so, I'm 56 years old, remembering pigment colours doesn't register high on my "to do list.') I hope these W&N watercolours work well and don't fade. I'm about to do a portrait of one of my daughters, following the multi-layer, wet on wet technique of the much acclaimed Korean Watercolour Portrait Artist J. Sun Hung. Wishing you and me all the best in your artistic endeavours. Kind Regards, Catherine
I hope you enjoy using the set! One thing it does have is heaps of colours which can be a good or bad thing depending. I still despise opening the set which means I don't use it as much anymore. It works well as a studio set that you keep open though. I agree the box makes it feel cheaper than a nice metal tin. I do prefer them too. The cotman do have some colours that fade, some yellows and reds in direct sunlight so just be wary. Best wishes for your paintings!
Hullo Elvie, Happy Christmas! Please contact Jackson’s about getting the missing color. If they can’t help, ask for their Royal Talens customer service representative number or e-mail. I am so polite when asking for help with a defective product or supply mistake. It happens we are all human. I enjoyed watching this swatch session, but I don’t believe that anyone needs to buy a 48 color set! 36 colors was the largest “set” I have ever purchased and I have 3 colors that I have yet to refill as I simply never used them past my initial swatch session! I would love to see a picture with all of the colors in this set! I have done it only once and I was recommended to try a carnival scene in the countryside! I did complete the picture, but I am in doubt about its success.
Yes, Jackson's customer service is really friendly! ps I love these paints!
thank you for the feed back! Yeah 48 is quite a few colours ...
Thank you for reviewing this for us. Merry Christmas
No problem hope it's helpful!
Hullo Elvie, I love the idea of using the paints of a relative! My Uncle’s and Aunt took all of my Grans art supplies when she passed away and I only have one #12 sable brush that she gave me before she died! I do have the years of lessons she gave so many of her kids n grandkids. Windsor & Newton has a grand repository of their paints, recipes and pigment information! I watched a video on a person who is re-creating Beatrix Potter’s paintings from the collection of her art and books too! W&N has the paint she used and this person has remade the paints as well as the paper she used from a paper factory that is recreating the original from a company that has been closed down for years and is now being brought back into production! I guess I am saying that the information on your paints is out there! I am looking forward to seeing what you create with these wonderful paints!
@@mjpete27 yes it holds a lot more sendamental value as well being gifted from someone, I was also given some beautiful brushes that are a joy to use! I'm stocked Im able to put them to good use once again :))
When I began my water colour journey in New Zealand just before Covid I bought a box of Mungyo to begin. I had no idea of pigments and now I have changed to W&N professional colours with one pigment and I hardly ever mix to avoid mud. But I still love some Mungyo colours especailly the cyrillian/phalo ? blue which I find is wonderful for skies. I also love the Naples yellow. I would by a box just to get these colours. I find blues tricky. The available blues do not give me the look or transparency I desire. I was disappointed with W&N Expensive cobalt and ultramarine. as do not give the brightness I desire. NZ has very bright skies and so does Italy I am got to try a French bLue and see if I can achieve the colour I want. I quite like the Mungyo Cobalt. You are correct about the brown. The joy of these paints is that there are so many colours, I had the large box that you do not need to mix, you can easily water down and also they lift easily. I use them in conjunction with W&N all the time. Great channel.
@@JanetteHeffernan that's amazing! They're are definitely fun and easy paints to use when starting out with watercolours, I find most no professional cobalt blues have white added in so I definitely would recommend ultramarine blue over it! Phthyo is a great blue, I also love cerulean blue it really depends on the brand! Hope you're having fun with watercolours still!
Fun!! I have a very old huge (like 15" x 9") paint box from the 1950s or 60s I got on eBay that is very similar to your vintage ship box! More or less the same picture. I bet it's the same company (made in UK.) I only bought it for the artwork on the box. The remaining paints in mine are trash (although the box says they are "Non Poisonous"), but I can't figure out how to get rid of the metal grid thing under the blocks of old paint that I'd have to cut out with metal cutters or something, and I'd probably need a tetanus shot afterward. I was actually thinking today that if I ever win the lottery I'd like to collect old paintboxes. They're way too expensive to justify buying all the ones I think are pretty or cute. But I do think they are cool.
For sure, I fell like having one vintage paint set is enough for me! Felt so special to get it local too! Paints are definitely not something I'll use anytime soon though, Thanks for the wonderful comment:))
Hullo Elvie, you presented a very good selection of supplies at reasonable prices. I love that DaVinci has samples of most of their paints! I started using them when they were not shipping internationally! I know that for most people it costs almost as much as shipping as the cost of the paints! I am also a HUGE FAN of Denise Soden’s curated sets! I purchased her Earth Friendly Palette and she has more but I already have the same paints that she put in her curated sets. Oh! I did have to buy one tube for the Embracing Opacity Set and it was the Lavender one. I usually just mix a violet with the DaVinci White gouache! I only recently started using gouache in my watercolor paintings, about 5 years ago. I was taught that the only white in your paintings is from the paper! I even had a painting rejected by the admissions officer when they asked if I had used any white paint in my painting and I said I used some for mixing, and BLOOP! They bounced my painting out! I did get my entry fee refunded, but they were reluctant to do so until I started making a scene. I can be very disconcerting when I get worked up ! I do enjoy watching your videos and I just want to say thanks! You create so much wonderful art and videos to show it off! Well done you!
@@mjpete27 glad you enjoyed the video, you're comments are always appreciated:)) Glad you agree on my picks!
Hi
@@Moonfox77 Hellllloooo:))
Hullo Elvie, you are correct! Royal Talens creates some of the very best art supplies! From the Rembrandt and VanGoth lines of paints to many other quality supplies. These are professional grade paints and they have lightfast ratings. I have cut the bottom out of the tubes of gouache that have dried in the tubes, and reconstituted them for use! I have been quite the struggling Artist in my younger years and made do many times with “hand me down” supplies that were not always in the best of condition. I have purchased a set of these paints to tryout for my go to gouache paints. I have painted with gouache on smoother surfaces like hot press watercolor paper or my favorite surface for gouache is illustration boards! There are many to choose from here in the U.S. I know that you have a few in Europe as well. I might even say try a board from Royal Talens or Schminke. Schmincke has a very good reputation and often the cost to go with their products! I enjoyed watching you create the ice cream and it did sound yummy! Please take care and stay safe over there! It does not seem to be safe anywhere anymore. Thank you for sharing your time and talents with us.
Thank you so much for the additional information on the paints! So helpful to know a bit more about the paint:)) One of my up coming videos is reviewing some gifted Winsor and Newton paints so I'm super excited about that. I love being about to share the paints I have and let others enjoy painting too, such a fun creative outlet, especially with friends and family joining in! Happy Christmas to ya!
Hullo Elvie, I thought you did a lovely job comparing these paints, well done! I am wondering if you are seeing less engagement? You did not include anything in your description and I believe this will hamper(make more difficult) for others to even find your video! I am also of the school or belief that unless you have no access or are struggling with money you should always buy professional grade paints. You might be surprised how much having better paints will make your painting experience better. Now I personally agree that paper is the first place to spend you money when starting out! I have made quite good paintings with the cheapest paints, but I know it will not last! I know not everyone lives in places where getting Art supplies is easy nor cheap! But I have seen quality paints at Walmart! Now I have no idea if you even know what Walmart is ! Just a huge store that sells bargain everything! It is also known for selling cheap items from China at discount prices! I would suggest Paul Rubens as they are made in China now, they are based on the professional grade Windsor Newton paints. I have found M.Graham to be available world wide but I have no idea of their costs either! Schmincke has been a better brand of Art Supplies world over, if you can get a hold of some of those paints I say go for it! My best go to paint is made in California at DaVinci Paints! professional quality and rock bottom prices here in the USA. I know they ship world wide, but the cost is quite a bit high. Like everything these days! Thanks for the video and let me know if the no description hurts this video!
Honestly I'm not to sure how it works with algorithm and stuff, I just never know what to add in the description sometimes. But good theory! Yes I don't by student grade paint anymore because I want my paintings to last as long as they can and I love the paint! Thank you for the great comment as always:))
Hullo Elvie, I really enjoyed seeing your work and your flip through went truly well! I am also of the belief that to get better at anything you just need to do it, drawing, painting, even cooking! I was in a figure drawing class and I was doing ok but never a face done in the first 3 weeks! The instructor was really helpful in that they said to stop overthinking it. Put in the shapes you see easily and you can work the negative spaces just the same. Position the eyes , nose, mouth on the head, fill in the details after. If you’re struggling just let it be simple. I remember the story of VanGoth being no good at faces as an apprentice and selling portraits was one of the major means of artist making money in his time, actually it still is! If you can draw a likeness, you can make money by doing so! Just keep going I can see improvement in your work, ease up on yourself and you will too! I made the most progress with faces when I concentrated with watercolors and filling in flat planes going from light to dark, adding in the details as I went along. You might give that a try. I think your doing great! Stick with it!
thank you! Defiantly will just keep going with it, it's quite fun!
Some cool art there missy
Thank you so much:))
Hullo Elvie, I am glad you tested out as many kinds of paper that you could get a hold of! This paper is made from the Agave plant, I have heard it pronounced as Ah gah vay. I believe they make tequila from this plant and use the leftover pulp for many things and now it is being used in making paper! I think making papers and other items from refuse or trash from a manufacturing process is a good thing! I am surprised that Holbein or Shin-Han brands are expensive for you as I thought that they being made closer to you would cut down on the cost! I know bringing those brands all the way to America is one reason for higher prices! Maybe it is a tariff situation? Well we are going to find out more about that situation in the near future as a bunch of fools have voted with their ass ends rather than their brains! Well I had better go as I have obviously crossed a line that should not be crossed in the comment section!
haha thank you for the comment! It was so amazing trying out the different paper, it's so easy to forget there is more than just cotton out there.
@@ElviesArt Yep, it is tricky when they make a paper for several mediums and add say sizing to the surface to make it watercolor "friendly" and no sizing in the paper for maximum watercolor retention!
I can't say it's completely perfect, but I think it's a pretty good drawing.👏🏻
Thank you so much:))
Hullo Elvie, I enjoyed watching you drawing, with a ballpoint pen no less! I immediately thought of Peter Draws who creates wonderful art with pen and ink! I am often amazed by his techniques with simple ballpoints that seeing him use the fountain pens is another level of astonishment! You mentioned your sister and I thought of Jess Karp, a wonderful artist who also works with pens of all kinds! I thought your cityscape was done really well too! I look forward to seeing you and what you create in the rest of this lil book! See ya next time!
Thank you! I quite like Jess Karp's works! Ballpoint is such a freeing medium to use and has a surprising amount of variety in line weight, so glad you enjoyed it:))
That drawing is amazing! Your art skills are amazing :D!
Thank you so much!! Definitely been enjoying the ball point pen to draw with :))
Cool :)
Hullo Elvie, I enjoyed seeing your "sketchbook" Do you find it funny that people call a book of paintings sketches? or that so many people put paintings in a collection in a "sketchbook"? I remember when I purchased my first workbook for paintings. I went to our local store (when we still had one) and asked the counter person for the workbook they use at the college, as this is what my Gran told me to go ask for. She laughed at me and said your a little young to be in college aren't ya? I might have been 14, before this my Gran had always cut down sheets for me to work on. She wanted me to gather my work together and show her my "practice drills" brush work and other techniques she was teaching me. Well I got the workbook, they make a similar one over at Cheap Joe's here in the U.S. They use their Kilimanjaro paper and use thin paper to separate the sheets, It was $4.50 I believe the same thing is now $26.29 it is called a Watercolor Paintbook and has 20 sheets of each The use Kilimanjaro Natural White Watercolor Paper and 70 LB drawing paper. I think the old book used tracing paper between the watercolor papers. Well I doubt you have a Cheap Joe's in New Zealand, but maybe they have a similar product. Needles to say I quickly ran out of money and my Gran showed me how to fold full sheets into workbooks using the Copic stitch for the binding. I do enjoy your videos and I just wanted to say Thanks for posting today.
It defiantly is quite funny they're all paintings in a sketchbook. I tend to call them studies as individual work. Watercolour paper and books are personally the best thing to spend the extra $ on, makes such a difference and honestly makes the painting so much more enjoyable. So glad you enjoyed the video:)
Cool!!
🔥💫
Omigosh! That Bratz name sticker/label is so nostalgic hehe! 😊 Great sketchbook tour!! Love your work!
Hehe yes I found it when I went to visit my parents! Thank you so much:))
Great painting, great video. Have the Holbein watercolor and gouache. Enjoy both of them. They are easy to use. Use Holbein and Turner design gouache at the moment. Also I have no problems anymore to add a color from another company to a brand. Like the ultramarine blue and yellow. I just add one nice cool yellow and ultramarine from another brand that I have and then I decide if I would like to have the colors from Holbein or not. Have had no problems so far. Thank you so much for showing.
I have been loving the gouache by them so much! The watercolours are so easy to use:)) Thank you for the comment!
Hullo Elvie, I have always thought that seeing companies charge more for HUE's make me a bit angry! They are not using the actual pigments! These paints should cost much less than the full pigmented paints! I have purchased the Holbein Artists grade 5 Primary mixing gouache set. I just am not sure if I would spend money on hue's. Have you noticed a big difference? Do you have any full pigment paints to compare them with? I noticed a big difference in W&N paints when comparing the hue to full pigment paints. I have used some "hue" paints where the original pigments are no longer available or are to toxic to use. Like DaVici's Vermilion Red is now a hue as the original pigment is simply no longer available and they cannot call it just plain Vermilion. I think it still looks like the orange-red I remember, but our memories can be fooled! Thanks for sharing your experience with us, you managed a lovely painting and I would like to see more of the process, maybe next time.
I don't mind painting with the hue variant and the set it self was quite affordable so I'm not too surprised about the hues. I only use them in sketchbooks not paintings I will sell just because of the multiple pigments in it. Definitely not as clean to mix with compared to high quality single pigment colours.
Cool paintings and really nice colour mixes, even if the sketchbook quality was a bust. Love the birds and the double page beach spread! Just wondering what colours/brands you have in your travel set?
Thank you very much! I switch between brands all the time as I use it up, and its got a range of professional and student grade paints. At the time I had Lemon Yellow and phthalo Blue (GS) (Winsor and Newton Cotman), Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue (M. Graham), Phthalo Green (BS) (Mungyo), Hansa Yellow Medium (Daniel Smith) and the Retro Red colour by Schmincke :))
great :)
awesome!
Hullo Elvie, I almost purchased this set of paints just to get the "Anniversary collection". I believe they launched this set before the company was sold. I am so glad I avoided these paints as I was going to give them away for a gift because I was told the gift receiver loved them. They have since switched to DaVinci because of the starter set I sent to them last Christmas! They also recited the company sale was another reason they switched as they are using some fillers in the "new" paints and they were quite unhappy with their last purchase! I hope I see more from you featuring this set of paints. I do enjoy seeing quality coming through in any paints! See ya again real soon!
That's great to know! I do like using this set quite a bit, they're really nice to use although come off as a little chalky looking? Must be the binder or fillers they use... It was pretty affordable which was why I bought it at the time and it would be interesting to compare to see if the paint formula has changed with the new branding. Hopefully it doesn't go down hill.
Hullo Elvie, I have often wondered why any starter set has any greens? Having an extra yellow or another blue is so much more sensible. I know some consider Raw Sienna a yellow, but for mixing more robust greens, not the best choice. I have gotten better greys mixing Ultramarine Blue and Raw Sienna than the included Paynes grey! I have seen some very nice paintings made from Jackson's watercolors, yet this starter set would NOT encourage me to buy more paint. What do you think? You have quite a journey to get these paints to you is it worth the trouble? I am wondering if you ordered some ROSA gallery paints from Ukraine would they come faster with less troubles than from the UK or Jackson's? I have found the ROSA paints to be quite nice and I have recommended them when I am told that shipping from DaVinci in California is just to expensive and import taxes are to high as well! I know that Artists in the America's are quite spoiled, yes even Canadians have a lot of choices. I know a RUclipsr who lives in Canada and she gets her sister to buy paints for her and they meet up and she pays for them! I suppose it is some violation so I will not mention names! but lower prices and no shipping, nor taxes. They are going to get together anyways, so I guess they take advantage of living arrangements! Oh My I had my string pulled or something, Eh? Thanks for a lovely video and I look forward to your future paintings with these paints!
Thank you for the wonderful comment, I find it really depends on the green added, usually they are good and help with creating some beautiful colours in the limited colour palette, this one however was quite restricting in the brown, red and green area and the black doesn't help push new artists into learning colour mixing. It was pretty affordable for how much paint you get and shipping wasn't to expensive, I bought it on special so could be worse. I have been looking to try ROSA watercolours, their sets are very affordable so its defiantly a brand I've been tossing up trying. I've got another video coming out very soon about the Holbein watercolour tester set which I had a joy using, and it is very well priced so that one I and glad I tried out.

Thank you so much:))

Sweet flip through! I wonder if you have ever used the Schmincke Akademie gouache? I saw your Schmincke Watercolor spread and I did not quite hear the name, but looked at the transcript and it said Jazz set? I have found that quite a few student sets are as good as some professional paints! Not for longevity, but for use they work so well (Like the Schmincke paints) flow and layering etc. I have used a long list of brands and I have found the DaVinci Paints of California to be best all around paints I have yet to use! When considering cost, quality, availability they are just the best. Now I do live in California, so that does spoil me just a bit! I enjoyed seeing your sketchbook and I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank You for sharing.
I've only used the 5x12ml tube set of their professional gouache (schmincke) But I don't go through gouache as quickly as I do watercolours, I think the next set of gouache I'm looking to try is the M. Graham set! DaVinci is beautiful paint, defiantly worth the high price to get it to New Zealand:)) So glad you enjoyed the vid
@@ElviesArt I like M.Graham too. I find it just does not dry into cakes form very well it is so sticky no matter how I dry the paints. I have tried heat guns to hair dryers to just leaving them outside in the sun under a board so they do not fade. Do you have a local shop to get that brand? I have noticed that Davinci has started shipping to international addresses and if you subscribe to their newsletter you can get sweet deals!
@@mjpete27 I bought the Denise's Earth Friendly Palette on their website earlier this year when they had a few overlapping discounts on shipping and sets over $150USD. The local shops are so expensive to I tended to buy my paints via Jacksonsart. Good to know about the M.Graham thank you, good to hear how other people find them before buying it.
Hullo Elvie, these are nice paints and you did a fine job presenting them! That silicone liner? I just do not like it! It is horrible for mixing and stains. I had my paint cakes keep popping out, I finally got them to stick with a bit of medium(GumArabic) in the bottom of the pans, popping the cake back in, then let them dry. I did get several of these when they went on sale because QoR was discontinuing some colors as they were introducing 20 new colors! I like the metal tins and if you get pans with a magnet on the bottom you can fit a whole bunch more pans in those tins and the lids make very nice mixing areas.
Absolutely, the colours are fantastic but the silicone liner isn't my favorite, I avoid mixing on it which is a shame but it's a nice small size, the pans of paint eventually stick with enough water but there would defiantly be trouble in dry areas!
I like this palette too! You are right, it’s a unique selection of shades, and then plenty of room to add more pans, so I have kind of made this my convenience colors palette - added lunar blue, undersea green, ultramarine violet, tigers eye, etc. I have also tried shades I never would have tried because of this palette.
Yes! It's the perfect palette to push yourself colour wise. It is still one of my favorites because of that:))
Great review thanks
Thank you!
Hullo Elvie, I tested quite a few brands when I came back to traditional watercolor painting. I finally purchased a 36 set of Mijello Mission Gold Watercolor paints for my choice for the paint I wanted to re-start my traditional art journey! I was just doing ok, but most of my paintings were just nothing special. I was not enjoying my return. I started watching videos online and found a channel “Hullo Alice” she told me about another channel named “In Liquid Color” Denise is an amazing artist and watercolor painter, rather a pigment nerd too! She was involved with DaVinci Watercolors of California and she released a Moody Trio of paint colors and they were truly amazing! I have since purchased all of her curated sets and DaVinci has overtaken most spots on my watercolor palettes! I have gone back to use the Mijello paints a few times and I have done better, yet the joy that I have experienced since making DaVinci my go to paints has not diminished! I am hopeful that you will have a more positive experience with your choices of mission gold paints. I am looking forward to seeing you put them into action! See ya next video.
Yes! I love Da Vinci watercolours, they've quickly become one of my all time favorites, they're so fun to work with and really enhance the painting process. I've been watching In Liquid Color's channel for ages and is how I came to find out about them too. It makes such a difference when the paints are fun to use! So far the Mijello Mission Gold paint has been good but not something I gravitate to use as much as other brand. Loved hearing your thoughts thank you:))
Cool!
