DIY Workbench Split Top & Gap Stop
Просмотров 56914 дней назад
Join along as I build a hardwood workbench top out of reclaimed cargo container flooring (along with some scraps). I really wanted a split top bench so I could more easily clamp down workpieces. Through the process of planning, I decided to try a poor man's version of a solid gap stop as I often need workpieces to not slide around when doing various tasks. I'm very pleased with how it turned ou...

Making a Crosscut Sled

From TREE to TABLE! (Oak Dining Table & Bench Build)
hello I would like to know if it is possible to have the project thanks. congratulations for your creations. I write from the Italy
Glad you liked the build. Sorry, I don’t yet have plans available at this time.
That turned out very nice!! Great job, and I love all of the care and thought put into it. 👍
Amazing build. I know you are learning Fusion. But count me in the list of people who would purchase plans!
You put a lot of time and effort into that workbench, my friend! Excellent job!! Highly functional, and looks good, too! Oh, and for what it's worth, glad to see at the end that you have the roll with the paper coming from the top and not the bottom...shades of the toilet paper debate. 🤣😂
Thanks so much! And yes, you know what they say about TP…”beards are cool, mullets are bad.” 😆 www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Ftkyp6lm29qm71.jpg%3Fwidth%3D640%26crop%3Dsmart%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Df5f86d656e8fcf5719094ce22ec7802ecd87df89
You've definitely inspired me to try to get my work areas more organized! Great video, once again!! :)
I always find I’m more productive when I know where everything is at!
That's a very fun and informative video, my friend! Great job, and what an awesome shop you have, too!!
Thanks so much!
Great design
Thanks!
FYI on the threaded inserts , for hard wood use the find thread inserts and the wax. table Looks good
Nice
I really dig those holders. If you use a stop block cut with a 45 , it will eliminate that buckling. Just take the offcut from cutting the miters and clamp it with the long edge against your Miter's fence. if the offcuts are small use one with a 90 on the other end and butt it up to any old piece of scrap wood and clamp that down.
Thanks for the tip. I ended up making a zero clearance fence which eliminated the sketchiness on my subsequent coaster sets.
Would you lose any function by cutting 50% of the back fence off and 45 degree cuts off of the sled base to further reduce size, weight and awareness?
I don’t imagine you would lose any function. Yes, it would cut down on weight, but my only fear would be the rigidity. Plus, I’ve trimmed some pretty hefty workpieces on one side of the sled, and I like the support the full size bed gives. If you’re working with mostly smaller pieces, I bet it would work well. Let me know if you give it a shot!
Bravo guy. Just like the other guy said, "really good for just winging it" Very well done.
Thanks!
At 10:47 it looks like the stop-block knob is preventing the wood from reaching the actual stop-block. Nice build, it looks like it gets around the size issue of the smaller SawStop - now I don't have an excuse to buy the SawStop :) Like most people (with a limited budget) I use trim routers in a small table. Putting a full size router in the larger table is a good upgrade. Subscribed.
Good eye. Yes, I was aware of it as it was a temporary stop from my drill press. I made a custom one (with plenty of tolerance) from cherry to match the rest of the miter saw station after that build because I was tired of that stupid knob being in the way. 😆 Thanks for the sub!
You did an amazing job notching out the Bosch Miter Saw doors. I would love to purchase a template
I’ll have to see if I can figure out a way to digitize a template.
How big is your shop?
Basically half of a 2 car garage. We keep a minivan parked in there unless I’m in the middle of a large project. More or less a 10’ x 22’ rectangle
To reduce the size and weight of the sled consider large 45 degree cutoff cuts from the back corners.
True, but I’d be curious if that would compromise any rigidity…
Excellent tutorial and a very nice design for the coaster n the holder. thanks for this video!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks
Sure thing
You are very visionary in your projects. I wish you made and sold plans for your miter/sander/drill press counter. Also plans for your table saw/router table. Love them. Kudos to you for doing such great things out of a car garage!
Thanks so much. I hope to some day when I can spend the time to make them top notch.

I was gonna comment on your finger placement when shooting brads, but then I thought I'd rather not, seeing that we're all grownups. Then I saw that brad pop through at 34:45, which changed my mind. 🤣 EDIT: Forgot to add that I like the design. Job well done!
You’re not the first to comment about that… so I’ve been more cautious in my recent builds. 😆 Have never shot myself, but sounds like lots of guys were speaking from experience. 😬
Is there a plan in cm to download? I would be happy. Thanks
I hope to some day, but am still in the process of learning Fusion so I can export plans, but have also been busy with other projects.
Thanks
You should check out the dust chute for that saw from Shop Nation, much better overall dust management.
Saw that after I finished this build. 😆 Looks legit!
@@kspencer_handcrafted I just got the same saw and am going to order it soon
Let me know your thoughts after you get some time with it!
@@kspencer_handcrafted I ordered the chute yesterday, hopefully it arrives soon. Did you ever figure out a way to share the plans?
@kspencer_handcrafted thanks for the lesson
You’re welcome
Haha. Oh my goodness. Haha. Awesome build, but man, to have your 2 year old in frame jabbering and moving around for a moment delighted me. So precious. “For such is the kingdom of heaven.”
Very good stuff now I will look for your saw table setup video.
Very nice!
What a great piece, absolutely amazing! I’m not one to criticize people for their technique but please consider getting rid of the gloves at the jointer and toss those push sticks. The gripper is such an awesome under rated accessory.
Yes, I realize that wasn’t the safest. I had been moving around lumber and was trying to avoid splinters, but have definitely been remembering to remove my gloves after the fact as that would be a WAY worse injury than a few splinters! And yes, you caught me being lazy again. 😆 My larger push stick had broken and I hadn’t taken the time to make up a new one before milling those large pieces. Thanks for watching my back though!
Nice build! I tried building one with those casters but went through two sets as they broke from the weight of the 4x6 workbench.
Good to know. I’m wondered if mine are going to hold out because the final weight of my whole workbench is extremely heavy. I know they make higher rated ones, so I might have to swap them if they give out after a while.
Look up R7 Castors feom Bennington Manufacturing. They are terrific.
What kind of magic
Just plain ole saw dust…no fairy dust here!
Might be my new favorite channel. The combination of a cool build and warm, supportive parenting of an absolutely adorable kid? Irresistible.
Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying it!
Love the "saw blade drawers"! very genius idea!!!
Impressive for a first "timer" ! really nice!!! Do you regret having it near a wall on the left rather than in the center of the wall to have both capacity of "long stock"on each side???
Thanks! Yes and no. If I had a huge shop, yes, I’d keep extra space on both sides. However, with my garage setup, it made less sense to try and fit any of my other tools in that corner, so I haven’t really had any issues.
Nice job there sir. Also, good dad. I've watched quite a few of these builds over the years, but now I've finally bought a tablesaw I think the time has come to turn my garage from a dumping ground to a woodwork shop. I really like the look of this one & I'm afraid to say I'm gonna be pinching quite a few of your ideas. This one seems "just right" for me. Once again, good job my man. All tge best from 🇬🇧
Hey, that’s why I post these videos, so feel free to incorporate as many ideas as you want! I’ve learned lots of tips and tips from RUclips, so hope to offer a few ideas of my own! Good luck with the build and wood shop setup. Give me a holler if you have a question or two.
отличная работа! особенно понравился откидной расширитель стола. очень хорошее решение, если не работаешь постоянно с листовыми материалами. лайк!
Finally, I see someone using the same dewalt nailer as me! Personally, I love it, but I find it heavy. What are your thoughts on it? Great build!! Subbed 😊
Yeah, it is pretty heavy, but yeah, I did enjoy it a lot until it started malfunctioning. For some reason it started timing out if you don’t engage the trigger right after depressing the nailer. You have to remove and reinstall the battery to reset it. Looking into the new Dewalt, or the Ridgid which is $100 cheaper.
@kspencer_handcrafted I have found it misfires now and again, however I'm a complete beginner so I know it's my poor handling of it at times. I did only pay £25 (around $30) for it though, with the charger, case and 2 batteries. 🙂
the only thing I would have done is have a dust extractor or shop vac inside the unit instead of using 4" to 2.5" adaptors and hoses. Other than that, I consider this perfection! Amazing job!
Yes, i could see that being a good solution too. I eventually may install a designated shop vac that powers on when the miter saw is engaged, but I love the suction power of the 2 HP collector, especially with the combined hood and saw extraction (which isn’t great from the stock dust shroud.) I wonder if some of the aftermarket shrouds would negate the need for a hood…
I'm in the process of moving so all my tools are at my old home, but I picked up an old 8 1/4 skilsaw to get me by and I desperately need a work table. Really debating something like this vs the Paulk benches. I have a one car garage I'd be working out of, and ideally I can park the car in every night. I think it's just about long enough to fit something like this against the back wall. Very nicely set up bench. For me, I'd want to use bench dogs instead of t track but undecided as yet. Great video!
How much would you charge to build me one?
Ha! Lot of factors there. Not sure if you’re being sarcastic or if you’re trying to get a relative cost for tools, materials, labor, and/or if it’s something you’re debating to tackle yourself. Wondering if I should make a video to breakdown some of those costs as a few people have asked…
For someone who doesn’t have a lot of money for material, I’ve never seen a more expensively equipped workshop. It’s taken a lot of money to produce this setup..
I’ll take that as a compliment! Most of my tools are second hand from Facebook Marketplace or holding out for crazy deals. Same is true for a lot of my materials. My shop used to be cobbled together workbenches and cheap Harbor Freight tools and such. I’m on a mission to build a quality shop by upgrading one tool/shop furniture at a a time. I’ve done the “cheap” route already, but that doesn’t mean I don’t penny pinch while I save up and sell old tools to replace new ones!
Pretty much a perfect presentation... do you have plans available?
Thanks! I don’t as of yet. Hoping to one of these days, but have been too busy with other projects.
Nice video, I love small projects like this. They make great gifts for Christmas etc. Keep up the great work...
Exactly! Thanks!
Great channel, thanks for the video
Very nice, well thought out video. Hope you enjoy many productive hours using your workbench.
Thanks! Yes, it’s so much fun to use, and much more efficient than my previous setup.
Nice!!!!
Great build!! Video was done well! I liked and subscribed.
Thanks!
Really like the coaster holder. I have built a few coasters, but struggle with the holder and how to make something that looks good. Just a tip as well, when using a router on square pieces like this, I would recommend doing your champher or roundover on the grain end first and then the sides. If you have some tear out on the endgrain, the missing chunk can be mitigated when you rout the sides. Yes it has happened to me on a couple of occassions. I was helping someone learning to use a router a couple months ago, and they didn't really understand what I was saying. They understood when the router tore a piece out of the side of the endgrain, and they were able to fix it by routing the sides.
Thanks! Yes, I’m aware of that tip, but have actually found it to often backfire on minimal chamfers/round overs. Sometimes the tear out from doing the end grain first is more significant than the small 1/8” round over on the sides can cover up, but for some reason doing the long grain first helps the end grain from blowing out when doing it second because of the transition already in place.
Wooow. Very nice work
Thanks!

It is so much fun to build organizers for my tools. Nice job on your socket set wall hanger. It looks sweet.
Thanks!
