Hi! My name is Evan Kuhlmann, I play bassoon and contrabassoon with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. I also love to teach, compose and arrange music. In my spare time I'm a wannabe jazz pianist, Spanish speaker, runner, and retro gamer. I hope to use this channel to post videos of performances, compositions and arrangements. Thanks for visiting :)
Stevie Wonder - Sir Duke (1976) arr. for bassoon ensemble
"Sir Duke" ends Side One of the iconic 1976 Stevie Wonder album 'Songs in the Key of Life.' It was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for many weeks, and it remains one of the most joyous and funky songs ever. A tribute to great musicians and music itself, this has long been one of my all time favorite songs, to the point where I played it with a rhythm section on my senior recital in college.
For this arrangement, I knew I wanted to bring in Andrew Brady after hearing his exquisite phrasing on Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas", as well as another Stevie Wonder cover from this same album (check out ruclips.net/video/xZ8fDEKGYPo/видео.html). The bassoon band shout chorus is the very happy result o...

Dmitri Shostakovich - Symphony No. 10, Mvt. II (1953) arr. for bassoon ensemble
Просмотров 8 тыс.4 года назад
This Symphony was premiered just months after the death of Joseph Stalin, although it's possible that its composition may have been undertaken years earlier. It has been claimed that Shostakovich intended this movement to be a "musical portrait" of Stalin, although the authenticity of this claim has also been disputed. Whatever the nature of its origin or what it may depict, this music has an u...

BASSOON IS THE BEST INSTRUMENT
I wish my great friend Bassoonist Bill Scribner (BAE) was alive to see and hear this!!!!
You are so talented! Brought a smile to my face 😄
Love this! Bet Shostakovich really had this version in mind, but he couldn’t find 8 accomplished bassoonists!
this is genius.
Is there sheet music for this?
you are all fabulous musicians!
Like sound
Violinist here. What an absolute joy that was to listen to! Very impressive indeed. Bravo 👏
Holy cow! We just did a new arrangement of this movement with the Dublin silver brass band. Great job sir!
Wonderful! Thank you!
I couldn't wait for 2:36, to see if you'd take it down...hell yeah you did! Bravo!
Record it again, with Richard Bobo's Subcontrabassoon!
If you like this , check out Rock E Bassoon. 6 tricked out electric bassoons and a kickin' drummer: ruclips.net/user/RockEBassoon
I love this so much! I keep rewatching and it makes me smile every time. ❤️ . Anymore compilations in the works?
I can't wait until 2045 when you can release this and I can finally get to play it.
Ditto what Lex and Jong said! ;)
Complimenti ti chiedo di registrarti al nostro canale
Bravo!!!!
My only regret is that I have but one upvote to give. Brilliant!
Super amazing Evan!!! <3
I'm definitely showing this to my middle school woodwind club. Thank you so much for creating this! Amazing job!
Bravo, Evan!!! Wonderful !!!!!!!! Keep 'em coming!!!!!!
😳 WOW! I’m a trumpet player and I wonder if that could be made for trumpet ensemble! I wouldn’t get close to the sound and timbre of the bassoons for sure! Amazing work!
So sad to not see a contraforte here, but man this was insane
Is it possible that these excellent improvised choruses use material from orchestral and classical pieces instead of using the fairly standard phraselets from the jazz repertoire? How refreshing!
I mean, you improvise with what you know lol It would be crazy if they didn't!
Great arrangement
Loving the “Rite of Spring” quote in the middle of that ripping solo.
What a legendary cover! 🤩
I was a white boy bassoonist in Seattle's Central District in the 70s. At the time, I thought my symphonic world and the pop world didn't cross. I missed out on a lot. This is like an alternate reality, I could have lived. Thanks so much Evan!!!!
Unbelievable!
the Bass Oon makes an appearance.
Wow, nice!
Yep---bassoons can cook just as well as the rest of them. (That little red thing didn't quite look like the rest of the bassoons, though!) I remember in the 1970's a friend had a record album of a double reed band playing the swing era hits--Miller, Dorsey, etc. and it was fantastic. Oboes can really scream!!! Thanks for this, very enjoyable. Those bassoonists are very good.
As a clarinettist, well, not bad......
Woahhhhhh. This was wonderfully magnificent!! I've never heard bassoons sound so jazzy! The arrangement was top-notch and all the guest players were fantastic. Love the unexpected melodica solo too!
my goodness! this is fantastic!! may i ask what editing software you used? we're currently trying to put a project together like this at texas lutheran university. thank you
Hey there, sorry I'm not fast with responses! Audio mixed in Reaper, videos compiled in DaVinci Resolve.
Excellent ,bravo!

2:39 is when I fell infinitely in love with this arrangement
Wah'd bassoon? Fantastic <3 Great arrangement :-)
Amazing! Thanks for posting it. Can I ask what video editing software you used?
Amazing! I miss playing so much! Anyone have an extra lying around? ;)
Wow I absolutely love this <3
PAUL HANSON HAS ENTERED THE CHAT
This is Amazing!!! Top work everyone! X
I think that’s why I find the Bassoon so awesome. It has the power to play every single part in a SATB just on the normal Bassoon! Then you have even bigger ones, and that funky sound it makes. So cool
