Sholay was sold on the hype of star power (5 Top order stars at that time - Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachhan, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri - plus well promoted Amjad Khan). It was a mishmash of many western films. But for indian audience, one film that comes to mind immedietely on seeing Sholay was Mera Gaon Mera Desh, I think released in 1971. Interestingly Dharmendra starred in that film as well - along with Asha Parekh and Vinod Khanna. MGMD also was a hit film, though not as big hit as Sholay. Personally I liked MGMD more. Technically it was as well made as Sholay and got far better music by Lakshmikant-Pyarelal.

Half of the scenes copied from once upon a time in the west. Thakurs family killed, child killed in the end, tanga wala scene, bird shooting, train scene, mouth organ music by charles bronson etc. Even the coin tossing scene is copied from some movie i dont recollect name.
