I’d like to think the reason Soichiro kept Matsuda was because he was incredibly skilled with a gun. He managed to shoot Light’s hand and then shoot him a few times to neutralize him but not kill, because he personally wanted to shoot him in the head himself. So he purposely shot spots that wouldn’t kill light, evidence being Light managed to walk away and Ryuk’s commentary heavily implying Light would survive for a long time and be put in jail where he’d have to wait for him to die.
Original all the way. The second edit completely butchered the atmosphere, pacing, and even destroyed what the entire anime is about and built to that point

@@Bluesit32 I mean he is clearly desperate in this moment like a corned animal. Right before this he tries to give a speech to convince everyone why they can't kill him and then he tries to get Matsuda to shoot everyone and then a little later he tries running away while bleeding to death. He just can't accept the fact he has lost and even more so that he lost to someone who isn't even L who he viewed as an equal while Near he views as beneath him.
