Hi! Whenever I play in the higher register loudly I spit a little and you can hear a little in my sound. Is there anyway I can combat this or am I doing something wrong with my embouchure?
Typically when I play an F above the staff is when I start to hear it
I would need to see & hear you play to know for sure. It’s possible that your embouchure is too tight. If you want to send a short video to me by Facebook messenger, I might be able to take a better guess.
@luellyndollard Oh ok I had a feeling, thank you. I don't have Facebook/messenger...
@sofiaperez2689, if you'd like to email it to austinflutesociety@gmail.com with Attn: Luellyn in the subject line, I can get it there.
Made region orchestra, region band and advancing to area! thx for ur videro
@@s0cialreject, Congratulations!! Good luck to you in January. Happy practicing!
I struggle with the 2nd measure going from high b to g then high c to g sometimes it doesn’t come out any tips auditions are Saturday
Sorry for the late reply. I was on vacation and didn't have internet access. I assume the audition on Saturday was for region orchestra, so hopefully you are still going to be auditioning for region band in early December. When high notes don't respond after a lower note, it's because we are waiting too late to increase the airspeed. If you speed up the air right on the high note, sometimes it's too late. I try to speed up the air, or crescendo, during the lower note, and then the high note just pops out of that. Let me know if that makes sense. Basically, speed up your air/crescendo before you get to the high note, not after.
Lovely to hear your beautiful playing again, Luellyn! I hope you are doing well!
Thanks, William! Hope you are doing well too!
I always look forward to your performance of the annual etudes. Beautiful as always!
@@curtiscurry5775, thank you!!
thanks a lot!

Congratulations!!! I’m sure you will LOVE playing with your all-state group!
How fast was the 1st etude played here
I’m on vacation with my family at the moment, so I don’t have access to my music or a metronome, but I try to record these as close to the high end of the TMEA recommended tempo range as possible.
I know that this video was posted forever ago but this is the piece that I chose to play for solo and ensemble this year. I was wondering if you could give me any tips? Is tempo pretty fluid in this piece? Also in the beginning, it sounds very slurred, but on my piece there are no written slurs. I’m wondering just how flexible this piece is and just any recommendations you would give. Thank you!
Hi! Thanks for your comment. Yes, the tempo is very fluid. It should sound a little like you're making it up as you go along. I'm not slurring at the beginning - it's just very legato; the notes are tongued, but very long. Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced my sheet music, so it's hard to give specific tips. I would learn it in a very straight, accurate rhythm to begin with, so that you know the written rhythm very well, before messing with the tempo. Once you're solid on the written rhythm, you can do some push and pull with the tempo. In very general terms, start a phrase slowly, speed up a bit in the middle (within reason), and slow back down at the end of the phrase. If you are able to take private flute lessons in your area, that would help you a lot - even if only a few to get some feedback on your interpretation. Good luck to you! This is a very fun piece to play.
@@luellyndollard Thank you so much! This is very helpful. I appreciate you taking time to respond!
Lovely playing, as always! Miss playing alongside you- hope you are doing well! 😊
Thank you! Miss playing with you, too!
What a pleasure to hear you play! You are aiding so many people with this video!
Thanks, Mr Allen!
These recordings changed my friends life thank you so much.
I've never taken the time to listen to the piccolo before, but I'm glad I did today. Your playing is lovely ☺️
Thank you!
I like how you play the piccolo
@@LuisOrtiz-d9h, Thank you!
Stunning Performance!!! Now I'm puzzled though... where's this brass section?! I can hear but not see!
Thank you! Only two horns. They're hiding behind the strings somewhere.😁
Love it!
What a treat! It works so well with C flute and Alto!
Thank you! Super fun to play this way, too.
Simply lovely ! Such a gentle and lyrical performance of a work that is usually played for weight and grandeur.
Thank you! You just made my morning.
Excellent 😊. So beautiful! Thank you !
Thank you!!
Outstanding!! Brava!!
Thank you!!
I wish I could have such a perfect tone like that even with high notes! I need to teach myself before state rolls around
Thank you! I hope your auditions go well.
How do you make the arpeggio s.urz sound smooth
I try to make lower notes feel louder than higher notes. Then they end up balancing themselves out. In slower tempos, if you speed up the air in the middle of the lower note, the higher note will speak more easily and stick out less. It kind of just pops out of the lower note, if that makes sense. If you wait until the high note to speed up the air, it will be loud and shrill.
Thank you!! This was very helpful and I love your sound on piccolo
Thank you! Good luck on your audition!
Such a breathtaking performance! 🎶😊
Thank you!!
Cool, it's on RUclips
Wonderful!
Thank you!
Great job! =)
Thank you!
Imagine she sight read all of that.
😂
Lovely playing, Luellyn! I hope you are doing well!
Thanks, William! We miss you in Austin!
Finally!
😄😅😉
Do you think you could record the etudes on piccolo as well? I plan on auditioning on picc and you sound incredible in your other videos
Sure! I usually do, but for some reason I didn’t this year. I’ll try to have those up in a week or so.
They're up! I put them all in one video, but there are time stamps in the description so you can go directly to whichever one you want to listen to.
yess thank you!
Thank you for listening!
My double tohnge syllable is so weird I just can't do tktktktk or dgdgdg mine is lugu lugu lugu
That probably works. I'd have to hear it to know. You're probably tonguing very forward in your mouth, and more between your teeth than behind, which is fine.
Do we really have to do 2 pages or will it be like last where ended in the middle of a measure
Well, you need to learn all of it. They probably won't have you play the whole thing, but you don't know which part they will choose, and it will be different at region than at area. Sometimes you have to play the whole etude, but that's usually when the etude is under one minute in length.
Nice job Lu. Beautiful as always!
Thanks, Laura!
What tempo is this
Quarter note = 100. The practice version at the end of the video is 1/2 tempo (eighth note = 100, or quarter = 50, subdivided)
@@luellyndollard so this the the audition tempo
@@monica7878, yes, the top end of the tempo range. 88 is the bottom end of the tempo range, so you don’t necessarily have to play it at 100.
Lovely, as always!
Thank you!!
Brava! Sounds like a lot of fun!
Thank you! It really was so much fun.
What brand is your gold flute and how many carats is it and how much did it cost
It is a Prima Sankyo. 9K with silver keys and a 10K head joint (a replacement of the original). I bought it used from a good friend for about $10,000, more than 20 years ago. They don't make the 9K flutes anymore, so a new, roughly equivalent 10K Sankyo flute would cost about $23,600 today.
It’s an honor to back you up locally in Wimberley…definitely inspiration to quit whining about key signatures and to up my game! :-)
What is the name of this piece I would love to learn it
Unfortunately, I don’t know! The etudes are usually just 3-4 lines and the copies I have don’t have the original titles on them.
@@luellyndollardaw OK but thanks I think my friend at the highschool might have it so I'll. Ask her for it but thanks anyways
Lovely! I've never heard this. It's really pretty!
It’s one of my favorites!
Haha, how fun!
Fantastic!! Thanks for posting.
Thanks, Mr. Allen!!
Would LOVE to get this arrangement! Did you arrange this yourself, or purchase off the shelf?
I took a string sextet from imslp & changed it up for 2 flutes and 4 altos. (violin parts became flute parts, violas and cellos became alto flutes.) I can send you my hand scribbled notes (penciled in on the string parts), but I don't know how legible it would be.
@@luellyndollard Thank you for your reply! Unfortunately, I don't have access to four alto flutes. But using mostly altos sure does make for a rich sound. Loved it.
@@janeullmann3697, Thank you!
This is the most astounding piccolo performance I have ever heard. Brava, Lu.
Aww!! Thank you!
Gorgeous, Lu!!! Wow, so haunting, enchanting, and lovely!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Thank you! It’s a satisfying piece to play.
What a rich sound.
Thank you!
What’s the tempo? I mean like the metronome speed.
About 60 bpm at the beginning and 63-66 after the fermata.
Absolutely incredible performance! Also, it was funny- before I read the description and realized that this was a performance at UNT I was thinking “wait a second… that looks like the Murchison.” So wild that I now get to rehearse/perform there every week!
