It is best to clip those ends and use fresh stripped wire to terminate, and you also do want to terminate on top of any sheathing. I’m paranoid enough to suggest going back and taking care of that to help ensure safety and longevity. Speaking as an experienced electrician. that type of switch should have a lifespan in ths decades...so usually if theres a problem, its not the switch but something else in the circuit. it kinda looked like in the socket that there were exposed wires at where it twists, which could potentially be the problem(also fire risk)

that switch it designed so you use the clamps, not screws like the original toggle switch.

😮No hate... but no mention of line and load cant be missed. For those who dont know you must identify what neutral (white wire) and hot (black wire) suply power to the circuit and conect those two wire to the line side in the same fashion you would wire a normal outlet where the black lands on the gold terminal amd the white lands on the silver terminal. The other two wire will land on the load side of the outlet protecting everthing down stream of the outlet. Electricity can hurt you and others stay safe out ther friends

You can't put just any black on any gold screw. One is the line, and the other is the load on a GFCI. It's not the same as a regular outlet.
