World War I in Film: Innovation and Struggle
This video consists of two silent films created by the U.S. War Department which I have brought together, one called Shots of War, a film designed to show highlights of the World War One fight and the other called Types of Weapons and Equipment showing the innovations in weapons being created in World War One such as new artillery, aircraft, tank, and ship improvements. World War One Ace Eddie Rickenbacker is in the video and as well as Generals Pershing and Joffre. You will see French refugees streaming from France when the Germans attack, and highlights of the Meuse-Argonne as well as St. Mihiel battles, German prisoners, U.S. soldier Doughboys in the trenches and ‘going over the top,’ ...

Thanks again Paul. Fascinating. I wonder if the footage at 20:25 is taken on the Santerre ridge, near the Somme, in July 1918? US and Australian troops fought there on the 4th, taking the village of Le Hamel in 93 minutes, an unprecedented, if small success. The type of vehicle and the appearance of the terrain are clues. Just before that, there is an image of a truck ploughing its way up a muddy road: one can briefly catch (20:00) a happy-looking and clean pup on the passenger seat of the truck. It made me smile.
@@lllordllloyd the detail in this film I have missed often, and in relooking I catch it. This, one of the wonders of such long film. I don’t know about the footage at 20:25, your assessment is probably as good as any. The film had some details but far too little. I will go back and look at the pup, thanks for catching that detail :-)
The majority of the US troops at the Battle of Hamel did a runner after refusing to obey the Australian command.
@@seanlander9321 I have researched the battle extensively and I am yet to find evidence of this. I always remain open minded. At the Hindenburg Line battles the US forces operating alongside Australians had considerable command and control problems, but that was inexperience rather than cowardice.
@@lllordllloyd Pershing ordered most of the Americans out of the battle at the very last minute. There were a few who somehow developed a temporary deafness and didn’t hear the order to do a runner and some even put on Australian tunics to not be noticed. A few companies were left to take part in the safer second wave, but in reality Pershing and his officers should have been court-martialled.
@@seanlander9321 Ah, yes, Pershing was not happy. According to what I have read- and I do not know everything- Pershing's attempts to pull his men out were thwarted by Haig. Monash the Corps commander planning the operation made it clear the US infantry were vital, so Haig engaged in correspondence witht he US high command until the battle was finished. Thanks for this information because I will go back to my sources with this in mind.

To think the aristocratic leaders of the warring countries were cousins, decendents of Queen Victoria of England. What was this conflict all about anyway? What a rediculous waste of lives. This is very impressive footage but it also reminds me of how our military controlled the information getting to the public. The wheels came off that train in Nam and that caused the ending of the war. People don't seem to mind war as long as they're not looking at it. My dad fought the last year and was captured by the Americans and spent 6 months in Northern France as a pow. He had shrapnel in his arm and stories about hearing the shells whistling and diving in the trench mud only to stand up and find the guys next to him dead. It's unimaginable. He managed to escape Germany in 38, brought his new wife over here. Lost family in the camps. Not a lot of chatting about the times but I got his certificate of commendation.
