      Beacuse in China, especially in old chinese society . if a girl marries off, it means that she no longer belongs to the famliy , so even she wants to go back and live with them that will not be accepted . Even now in the 21st century in some parts of china, if you get divorced and go back to your parent's house ,you can't stay long. Beacese the people around will spurn you.

      It was a common practice for girls especially from poor Chinese families to be either sold off outright or through marriage since they were seen as bringing little value since they didn’t pass on the family name and went to live with their husband’s families. Happened in my own family many generations ago. For a girl a situation like Lindo’s to try to return to her family would have been very disgraceful to their honor so the best Lindo could have done was start a new life independently for herself

    The original scene is less campy and doesn't actually resolve the disconnect in their relationship. This only happens sadly after the death of June's mom, when June travels to Asia. What Su communicates is always cryptic to June, including in this scene (partly because Su talks to her in Chinese, not in English). But what June expresses in this scene is what she's felt all her life which is being a failure in her mom's eyes, due to failing at the piano, dropping out of college, getting evicted, having a dead-end copywriter job and being single, and this is amplified at the dinner party when she is humiliated by Waverly and her mom seems to take Waverly's side and criticize June. But here in this scene after the party, June realizes that her mom wants her to go her own way, instead of trying to emulate Waverly. At this moment Su gives June her jade necklace in the hope June will have a better understanding of her.

    This is my 2nd favorite scene of the movie. She thinks her mom insulted her and took Waverly’s side, and I loved how her mother explained; she wasn’t insulting her in favor of Waverly, she saw her clearly and she saw her heart, and one has to be born with such a heart, it’s their own style that can’t be taught. It’s their nature, and it’s beautiful.

    So absolutely poignantly beautiful...the tenuous relationship between mothers and daughters, the weight we feel as children to live up to the expectations of our parents…the burdens parents may be carrying of which we as children don’t see or understand that may shape our relationship..the difference in our perspectives and realities…so thankful my mom and I had a similar encounter over our misperceptions, expectations and sorted things out…much like this encounter..and yes it makes me cry..

    So many of the asian kids I went to college with described growing up the mom in the first part. . but they never got the "best quality heart" part. So many eating disorders, depression, suicide, from this "hopes" as she calls them.

    • @shirleyhou40
      @shirleyhou40 2 года назад

      So true and painful...If mothers only demand kids without encouraging and showing love to them from time to time, kids would be overwhelmed as a result. Though we can't really decide how mothers behave, at least we can be psychologically prepared for ourselves and know how to take good care of ourselves mentally.

    • @GK-jl4oo
      @GK-jl4oo Год назад

      Yes....there is an intensity to this scene which comes from a deep understanding from both actresses concerning the relationships between a mother and daughter in a Chinese (or Asian) family, specifically between first and second generation family. Hardships, frustration, repression, hope, are all subtly expressed in this scene. There is great acting here, but they are also expressing themselves or the people they have known closely, which is why this scene is so natural and powerful.

    • @shirleyhou7749
      @shirleyhou7749 4 года назад

      I agree with you that her mom is hard on her daughter which could be stressful and even painful for the daughter...the road for the daughter is tough. The mom rarely praises for what she does wonderfully. Sometimes moms take for granted for what their daughters perform well and only emphasize on what they do not do good enough...it also happens to my relationship with my mom.
