Wait a While - Old Man Luedecke cover on new travel banjo
Just finished building this travel banjo, it's a 21" scale length that I wanted to make sound more like a regular sized open back than a normal short scale. Achieved standard tuning with good tension with Aquila Minstrel Nylguts.
I am really happy with the tone and playability of this banjo. It was a commission for someone in Halifax Nova Scotia, they wanted to pay tribute to Pete Seeger with the harpoon headstock. And the idea was to keep the banjo at 30" total length so it would fit in overhead luggage on a plane.
It's got a Douglas fir neck, with Yew fretboard and headstock overlay, and curly oak 11" rim with a rolled brass tone ring.
If you'd like any more info about it or would like a ...

Steam Mill Band - Elk River Blues
Просмотров 3972 месяца назад
This is a cover of what I believe is Sierra Ferrel's take on Elk River Blues. The original did not have any lyrics and is a haunting fiddle tune that was written by Ernie Carpenter after the government took his family’s land to build a hydroelectric dam, which ended up flooding the Elk River and the surrounding area. Carpenter's family had lived on that land for generations, and the song captur...

This is my White Whale. I'm still working at it, and have a ways to go, but I figured I'd post videos of this tune as I get better at it. 6/8 time on the banjo is really hard. This Allison de Groot version of this tune is amazing though, fun to learn.

Sail Away Ladies - Tommy Jerrell Version
Просмотров 1038 месяцев назад
This is Tommy Jerrell's version of Sail Away Ladies I learned from Lucas Poole a few years ago. Was just borrowing a banjo off a friend that I made years ago and wanted to get a sound bite. It's a 12" maple rim with a rolled brass tone ring. Contact me if you'd like a custom open backed banjo built.

Last Chance - Clawhammer Banjo

Playing Hobart Smith's tune Last Chance on my Old-Faithful banjo with nylon strings. This is an 11" dobson tone ring banjo I made 6 years ago, still one of my go-to banjos. I learned this tune watching a video a few years ago of Nora Brown performing it with a fiddler. I've grabbed a few other licks off some other players as well over the years.

Wildflower Perfume - Clawhammer Banjo
Very pleasant cover! I quite enjoyed it! That's a cute banjo, too; nice work! 😁
@@StanleyWaltsBanjo thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, it's nice and short but still plays well, kinda want one of those banjos for myself now.

Here, have this like 👍love from Germany
@@cocobunitacobuni8738 Danke!
Sounds lovely. A very pretty tune.
@@susannenemet4647 thank you :)
What a lovely tune to wake up to…
Y’all have such a great sound together! Love it!
Thanks so much!
This recording sounds great. What even is that little box with pubes on it? Wish this is what came out of the PA when I play into a microphone.
@@zachb8012 haha thanks. It's a portable h4n pro on it with a windscreen.
Something about this lil video warms my heart ❤
@@pseudonymlifts2 so glad to hear it :)

wow- really great guys
Y’all are so good!
@@blacksheepbanjos thanks! Hopefully more to come.
I tried playing with a guitar. It was bad. How do you tune for that?
Banjo is double D and the guitar is playing out of D and capoed at the second fret. Is that what you're looking for?
@@fundybanjos Yes! The guitar I played with was in its standard tuning and I didn't know what to do, but I know DD tuning. I can ask the guitar to put a capo on the second fret.
@@BanjoRose_down-picker if they were playing in standard tuning you could play it in double C. Or it's possible to play out of D on standard tuning on the guitar. So they don't necessarily have to capo to second to play on double D. Anyhow, hope I'm not confusing the matter. Good luck, it's a tricky tune, it's crooked in the B part.
Love it! Dig the contrast between the high and low variations too
Yeah! Carling did a great job on this tune. Such a crazy tuning too.
Y’all really do sound great!
Sounds great
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
@@fundybanjos what kind of mic are you using there?

Your skull collection ruined it for me 🤢🤮
Keep it up guys, love the sound!
Aww I recognize her now with her hair down. I like this song!
Who is this young girl? Lovely playing, both of you.
@@susannenemet4647 that's Anna, you met her at the concrete house show. Glad you like it 😌
@@fundybanjos yes I recognized her in other videos. She looks younger with her hair pulled back. Love the playing.
Wrill good music.
Beautiful, gracias
So good!
Appreciate it!
Somewhere deep in the archives I have a video of you playing that at Nimblefingers.
@@Nomadboatbuilding haha nice! You'll have to show me if you find it sometime.
Sweet stuff as usual Alex
Thanks buddy! One day I'll record this one with guitar. After I practice another year... Haha
Very nice!
@@ben-asher-banjo thanks!
It’s great to have a cat 😂
Very nice what tuning is it in
Thanks! It's supposed to be in dCGCD, so, double C with the 5th dropped way down. But I didn't realize that when recording it. So I played in double C, relatively at least. I honestly don't notice a huge difference dropping the 5th down for this one.
Is this in the same tuning a "Cumberland Gap"? Great tune and well played. Been wanting to learn it since I first heard Jason Romero and Pharis play it.
Yes, it's the same tuning. fDGCD relatively at least. Not sure if I was dropped down a step or not. Good luck learning it, hopefully this video helps, but I made a minor timing error on this one. I have another video I did with the guitar and banjo and got rid of the timing mistake.
@@fundybanjos Thanks, there are a few tabs of it on Banjo Hangout, but I prefer to figure it out by ear if I can.
@@davidcudlip6587 yeah, that's how I prefer too.
Love hearing you play.
@@susannenemet4647 glad to hear :)
I love how bluesy that arrangement sounds! Great playing! 😁
@@StanleyWaltsBanjo thank you!
So great!
Yeah his version is legendary, great job, you captured the funky bluesy mood perfectly
This is dope man. You really captured the tune note for note.
@@abbanjo13 thanks a lot! I got the notes right, I think... But I got a message from Dan himself and he explained he wasn't doing so much complicated stuff with his thumbs, he was doing alternate string pull offs. So I just corrected the way I'm playing it and maybe I'll make another video sometime. Still hitting the same notes but it's a bit easier without my weird technique I was doing.
Man. I cant thank you enough for this. Been playing for about 4 years and only just started messing around in other tunings besides G. Mostly double C but ive always been curious about the sawmill stuff. I still cant learn by ear so i come on youtube and slow videos down a bit until i figure them out. Never thought i would be playing this song when i first heard Jason's stuff.
@@nicholasresch9614 no problem! Good luck learning it. The tuning is the same as sawmill but the 5th is tuned down a step. So fDGCD, sometimes called Sandy river bell tuning. Jason plays it down quite a bit though from what I remember. So that timing I gave, relatively, but tuned down a step or step and a half. Hope that's helpful
@@fundybanjos Yea I saw in another comment that the 5th string was F so i had a head start there. Took awhile to figure out a couple of those alternate pull offs but i got there eventually. Your playing is so smooth! Might have to give that stepped down tuning a try because it sounds incredible. Blows my mind that people can come up with these melodies. Thanks again man!
dunno how this came up but i clicked and what a treat. thanks
@@jimhockley9730 oh thanks! Yeah I didn't expect anyone to find it. Just wanted to show some friends. Glad you enjoyed it!
This is really fantastic, this tune has always fascinated me, well played
@@ben-asher-banjo thanks, I've been feeling like I should revisit this tune actually. Still had a bit to work on. It's one of those really rhythmically interesting tunes without a lot of notes.
@@fundybanjosyeah, it's about as rhythmic as you could ask for, I'd like to try it when I'm done with the tune I'm currently working on (Shout Lulu)
@@ben-asher-banjo nice, I don't know that one but I know hook and line, that I think might have some similarities
Nice work Alex!
@@Nomadboatbuilding ah thanks man, went over well at the film fest
Great! Got tab for it?
No, sorry I don't have any tabs. A few people have asked so maybe one day I'll write some out. It's in sawmill tuning though. gDGCD
@@fundybanjoshope you do. I’d love to get the tab.
thats a beautiful spot to play that song on the banjo!
Thanks, it was a bit tricky because it was raining a bit, but quite pretty there
Nice tune Alex!
Thanks 😊
I think that was the first tune I ever heard you play Alex.
Oh yeah? Good memory! It's one of the first clawhammer tunes I ever learned, so that makes sense.
Nice playing dude. It’s harder to play these tunes slow, but you you can throw loads of cool little variations in when you do. I’ve been learning to slow down lately, but have loads of (mostly fast) old time banjo stuff on my channel, so check it out if you feel inclined.
Hey, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I guess I do like the slow approach to a lot of tunes. Nice videos you have!
Can't thank you enough for playing this right in front of the camera. Can't learn by ear so watching you helped loads. Love this.
Glad it helped! Definitely makes things easier to see them for sure
Love it
Thanks man!
