ktm doesn't really fix anything. they just release new things with new faults
@@otlndsh let’s hope they do find a solution for this issue, if not they will loose a lot of future business. Thanks for watching!!!!
KTM owners are a very weird bunch. I own a KTM 790 Adventure R, I purchased it new and it's had numerous issues including the camshafts failing at 28,000km which was $6000 AUD worth of parts and months waiting with no timescale given. I am absolutely bashing KTM, I don't care how good the bike is when it works, I don't care about the history of KTM, KTM's handling of this entire issue and every interaction I've had with them has been a disaster. I hold no brand royalty, KTM don't care about me as an owner, what do I owe KTM? I would of happily purchased KTM's in the future as the performance is good when they work, however KTM have insured I'll likely never buy a KTM again and I'll very happily share my experience and criticize KTM for it as it's completely, true, factual and justified as a owner of the bike who has had issue after issue. Not quite sure why KTM brand royalists will defend a brand for genuine criticism when the brand does not show the same level of support to it's customers and treat them with contempt.
@@SomeRandoInternetPoster thanks for sharing, I used to own a automotive shop and had similar experience, had a customer that owned 3 range rovers, one was his, one his wife’s and one spare. They were my customers for 6 years before they moved and pretty much all the time I had at least ONE in my shop, he literally just kept swapping them out. And asking him why wouldn’t he sell them and get something else he sayd he just loves them to much when they work. I agree with you, I have several motorcycles from different brands, so no brand loyalty, only bike I do like and don’t let me down. Thanks for watching!!!
2019 790Adv owner here. This is a very shitty situation for owners with fcuked engines, very frustrating I’m sure. My bike has been trouble free so far… Hopefully not jinxing myself 🤨 Hopefully KTM come to the party and help rectify this situation, fingers crossed!
@@alphonsvanmaanen really glad to hear that your bike doesn’t have this issue!!! Fingers crossed 🤞 it stays that way!!! Thanks for watching!!!
Same here. The engine is running flawlessly after north of 30.000 km. Other issues came up, but nothing catastrophic so far. Maybe we're just the lucky few. 😂
The 790 head should have been designed with replaceable cam bearings. Running the cams directly in the aluminum head is an improper design.
@@garthlundquist3623 honestly I think that would have been only half the solution, pretty much 90% of cams run directly on the head these days with no issues, it’s what ever material/ follower design they have. Thanks for watching!!!
I’ve put 155 hours on my 2024 TE 300. It has been great, only needing tires, brake pads, gas, and oil. I expect 250-350 hours out of a top end riding hard enduro terrain.

I have a 2020 KTM 790 Adventure and had to replace the entire motor one year into ownership. KTM did not support it and I had to pay the entire bill. the local dealer was fucking amazing and waved the labor but it took nearly one year to get the drive line parts from KTM to rebuild the bike. 11 months almost to the day it died. I had put 12K miles on it changing the oil and filters every 3K miles. I planned to keep the bike forever but now with 90 miles on the new motor it is getting sold.
@@brianboylan6498 wow that’s insane!! So sorry to hear that!! Thanks for sharing and watching!!!
I sold my 22’ 890 Adventure solely for the cam issue. Had mine checked out, luckily they were good at the 11K service. Made the decision to go to a T7. I’m keeping my 501, just because it is so lightweight and I’m not getting any younger.
@@pinkiewerewolf it’s said the whole cam deal. Otherwise those bikes are great Machines. I ride a t7 myself just for the simplicity. Thanks for watching!!
@@FMC-20244 It was actually the perfect bike for me. I won’t tolerate a company not taking care of known issues. I had one of the first runs of the Pan America Special. That bike left me stranded too many times. The MOCO wouldn’t listen to any feedback regarding the electronics that let it down but they did buy it back from me for a good price. So they took care of me in the end. H-D also didn’t bring the 975 Pan Am out that they were set to bring to the public. KTM/Husqvarna and their dealers need to fix the cam issue and the TFT issue if they still build up moisture on the inside, also make it right with the current owners.
Same...sold my 901 Expedition too for the same reason. Too much money on a bike to worry about cam failures like this. Great bike but not a long term bike. The 500/501 engines are great proven engines!!

KTM socks only goodwilled parts in my cam, follower's and head rebuild @21,000km. KTM are thieves.
Take a class action out against KTM. KTM have been selling motorcycles with cylinder-heads that are not designed with a correct oil-feed to the camshafts. Hence, these KTM motorcycles with this type of cylinder-head are not of merchantable quality. KTM have since superseded the original flawed cylinder-head with a newly improved design, which has to be installed along with new cam-shafts.
I changed my own cams and followers because it was cheaper than paying labor and hoping KTM gave me parts. $800 in parts. The best part is, when you have what looks like galling on the cams KTM says they are "discolored," and you should buff them off and put it back together. WTF? I will NEVER BUY A KTM PRODUCT AGAIN.

Well this raises the question of how many other bikes are effected with this issue, and when has the new cylinder head been put into production of new bikes. I never really new the truth about this motor; is it designed by KTM and built by CF Moto? The motor is used by KTM and CF Moto and is used by Husqvarna as well. This is really disappointing, considering how many good reviews there has been on this motor. Definitely staying away from any bike with this motor or it's variants till there is a clean bill of health.
@@robertgagne9355 there is no official number out there on how many bikes are affected, and many owners of these bikes say they don’t have any problems, but honestly you wouldn’t know unless you take it apart and check. This bike ran 💯 and we couldn’t tell what was going on until we took the valve cover off. This bike was still build by Ktm in 2019. Could it be a wheely problem? Like the sv 650 . Wheely that and you're front cilinder gets no oil so you're 650 ends up as a 325
I doubt it, way to many bikes with those issues. But still a interesting thought!!! Thanks for watching
No, it's not a wheelie problem. I had to replace the camshafts on my KTM 790 Duke and I'm not very good at wheelies. My bike being a Duke also removes the "dusting" issue that KTM states is the issue/cause on the Adventure bikes. It is more likely poor surface hardening and possibly clogged oil jets.
My friend is a REALLY calm rider and he had to replace his camshaft at less than 20000km.
@@iamandreja sorry for your friend. This is such a let down on a very loved bike
Awful crap from KTM, brake pads last longer than their cams… they did lots of work and durability tests to make sure we get a durable product!

lol - it's true I replaced my camshafts at just under 70,000km, my brake pads were still good at 80,000km but I changed them anyway.
If you respect your money, stay away from european junks. These days, all the companies, hunt horsepower via tight tolerances to meet euro 5 regulations and the mechanical parts always fail. Buy japanese bikes only.
I’m a big Japanese fan myself, but I have to be honest I have a 2020 husky te250 2 stroke and that bike is working like clockwork. Never a single issue
Hardly. The Ducati Testastretta engine (937cc L Twin) is a bomb proof design. Guys who regularly track this motor can't destroy it. Has a long, proven track record. Really I bought a 2023 890r Duke. I figured if this problem showed up in the 2019 790r they would have made some updates. Now I’m worried! I’m thinking I want to contact ktm before I have issues and ask will they be warranty the bike if it fails. I have bought 11 of there bikes over the years. The only problem I have had was the 08 990duke swelling compensate fuel tank. They did replace under warranty. On my 14 SDR the radiator sprung a leak and needed to be replaced. They didn’t cover that. That cost me $750. I also had the rear single sided swing arm loose hub failure. They covered that under warranty. I don’t no why this wouldn’t be a recall replacement under warranty. If this is still an issue from a 2019 790r and it wasn’t been updated in following years why hasn’t anyone sued ktm?

@@RobertKehl It is definitely less frequent on the Dukes, but there are cases reported.
I see so many vehicles, 2 wheels and 4, that have this issue. The cam lobes furthest from the oil feed get starved. What a useless design having oil come in from one side through one channel in my opinion. All it takes is some particle build up or maybe even oil filter change without soaking the filter in oil before installation.
Definitely a design flaw here!! Thanks for watching!!!
It's been shown not to be the lobes farthest from the oil feed in some cases.

KTM bikes are expensive to maintain and are not user friendly when it comes to doing work on them yourself unless you have some reasonable mechanical aptitude.I have spent plenty on my old 950 over the years with the power and performance making it difficult to let go of.The new T7 tenere looks like a cheaper more reliable option.
I agree 💯 with you!!! They are fun bikes but pricey and high maintenance. I own a t7 myself and love the bike, motor is basically bulletproof, but suspension is a bit on the weak side. Thanks for watching
You say many KTMs have this problem but what is the actual number? I had my 2019 790 Adv serviced a couple of weeks ago at 19,000 miles, the valves were still in tolerance and the cam lobes were ok.
Then you sir are one of the lucky ones!!! Even though there is no official actual number it seems like over 50% of the 790/890 series has this problem. There is a group page that only discusses the cam issue and every day we see 5-10 new members stating that they bike have a worn cam. And the problem seems world wide, not limited to any country
@@FMC-20244 that's a bold claim of over 50%. Is there actually any evidence to back it up or is it a case of my mate said etc

Exactly. There are more stories than actual cases. Especially alot of keyboard warriors who like to be "experts". There are some, but how many? My dealer had never heard of the problem and he has sold alot. What's alot? Exactly!
All these cam wipe outs on ktms look like oil starvation to me. The harder material wears rather than the softer material. Without oil to protect the metal to metal contact you get this

They haven't learnt the lessons of the car industry. They have gone cheap and its not working for them. Every manufacture has to go through this for some unbeknown reason. Bring production back to Europe and sort your quality control out!! not hard??? Also lose that tech pack shit. That really pissses customers off. I've bought 6 new ktm's over the years. Really want the 1390 SMT when it comes out, but just do not want hand 20K plus over for a bike with dodgy reliability and over bearing electronics. I don't ride fast, but hate them. My super duke GT traction control put me in hospital for a week. Love my Ducati, but miss my ktm. That's the future.
Yes sadly the quality control is a big issue here, as far as the tech pack, I personally don’t care for it at all, but most of todays consumers do and that’s why they keep stuffing these bikes with electronics. What blows my mind is that ktm charges a arm and a leg for those bikes and then you have to pay extra to unlock the tech that’s already on the bike and the consumer already paid for 🤦🏻♂️
