Rachmaninoff: Symphony No.2 in E minor, Op.27 (Litton)
It is no secret that Rachmaninoff was a great admirer of Tchaikovsky, and the latter's influence is evident in several respects. Both composers are indeed reputated for their great melodic inspiration, masterful use of color, all in the service of powerful emotional expression. That is not to say that Rachmaninoff's music was a mere emulation of Tchaikovsky. Rachmaninoff incorporated his own unique musical language into the great traditional forms, exactly like Dvořák before him.
As far as musical form is concerned, Rachmaninoff's second symphony offers several fascinating points of comparison with Tchaikovsky's own symphonies.
To begin with, Rachmaninoff's second symphony follows a cyclica...

Sibelius: The Bard, Op.64 (Sakari)
Просмотров 8275 месяцев назад
The Bard is notable for being one of the shortest, as well as one of the most evocative of all Sibelius' tone poems. The striking atmosphere of this piece is achieved with elegiac harp solos on top of a rather minimalist orchestration, showcasing Sibelius' mastery of orchestral color and mood. Petri Sakari and his Icelandic forces deliver one of the finest recordings of this elusive work. The f...

Ravel prefaces the score of La Valse as such: "Swirling clouds give glimpses of couples of waltzers. The clouds gradually dissipate: we can see an immense hall populated by a whirling crowd. The scene gradually lights up. The light from the chandeliers shines in the fortissimo. An imperial court, circa 1855." The narrative proposed by Ravel in this piece is divided into four parts. Part 1 - "Th...
Franck: Le Chasseur Maudit, FWV 44 (Roth)
Просмотров 9377 месяцев назад
Inspired by Bürger's ballade "Der wilde Jäger", Le Chasseur Maudit (The Accursed Huntsman) tells the story of a Count who sets off on a hunt on a Sunday morning. As peasants are trying to dissuade him from pursuing his expedition, the Count does all sorts of blasphemy: he tramples on a wheat field, slaughters a flock of sheep and curses in a chapel. A sinister voice then arises from the woods a...

Saint-Saëns: Piano Concerto No.2 in G minor, Op.22 (Kantorow)
Просмотров 8 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Father and son team up for what has to be the most theatrical and dazzling performance of Saint-Saëns' infamous piano concerto in G minor. The originality of this work mainly lies in its unusual structure: it's basically a giant accelerando, which starts with an organ-like prelude à la Bach, and ends with a blistering tarantella. Both pianist and conductor operate on the same wavelength in unde...

Mendelssohn's third symphony is without a doubt one of the most visionary and influential works of the entire 19th century. Having worked on it for over a decade, it is by far the composer's most accomplished symphony, and the last published during his lifetime. The symphony famously takes its roots from a trip that Mendelsshon made to Scotland during his early twenties. The sight of the ruins ...

The best answer I can give you is I don't know. Besides the time and effort it would require, it depends on the availability/existence of MIDI files, which is never guaranteed, especially for such long pieces.

@@blacksky492 He's not anti-climactic. Brahms had such a strong feeling for form and structural integrity that his climaxes tend to be more subdued and intellectual, and less overtly emotional. You can't listen to Brahms the same way you listen to Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Tchaikovsky... They're just different musical personalities, all great in their own way.

Just a few remarks regarding the harp part: 1/ Harmonics are shown in their real pitch, i.e. one octave above the string that is actually being played. This is the reason why you'll notice some overlapping notes, something which I normally always take the time to fix. 2/ The piece contains several 3-note glissandos, and they look absolutely horrid in Synthesia because a ton of notes are being played in a very short time. Unfortunately, there was nothing I could have done about it. 3/ At the climax of the piece, the harpist is asked to play glissandos ad libitum (6:55). Needless to say that what you're seeing in the video is a gross approximation of what the player is actually doing. These are the kind of difficulties you're likely to encounter with Ravel's music.

In terms of what impresses me as useful and beautiful, this is the best music visualization technique I have ever seen. It is so nice to see the notes coming in the scrolling section before they are played, the color coding of different instruments is ingenious, and the mapping of everything onto a piano keyboard, collisions be damned, works very well for me. If there is a downside, it is that one’s attention may be distracted from the exquisite playing of the music by Kantorow and the orchestra, one of the best interpretations I have heard. Bravo!
