That Voice Again
Peter Gabriel is far and away one of my faves. And Manu Katche never disappoints. This song is just filled with oddities that somehow work. It's even kinda awkward to play and the slap delay makes it even quirkier. Recreating the sonic aspect was also strange as the super bright production and mix is really distant from my own sound. I did my best.

With our buddies at Drumeo doing a great feature on Phil Collins I thought, it's time. Phil is in my top 5. Always grooving, creative, unique. You know his sound. While he sounded great with any engineer, the combo of him and Hugh Padgham was deadly and innovative. I have a long list a favorite moments from his long and varied career. Duke and Face Value were obvious changes in his style but th...

I stepped into the Sabian office here in Burbank, Ca. to pick up a gong and before I knew it I was behind Chris's kit with a brand new set of Stratus cymbals. The first thing I noticed was the distinct pitch of all the cymbals. Next was how well they complimented each other. There is a unique voice in this line which is great. Can't have all cymbals sounding the same. They felt great to the tou...

This is a track by Greg Lastrapes. I often tell young drummers to focus more on playing slowly as opposed to the super fast stuff. Building speed and playing clean should also be part of your practice regimen but mastering slow tempos will help with your overall time.

Continuing the series. How about some Mickey Curry? When this song came out, I'm pretty sure every drummer took notice. It's not that Mickey was an unknown quantity, it's just holy smokes this groove!!!!! The fills!!! The Bob Clearmountain sound!!! Mickey really made an incredibly strong statement on this whole record. Just ask Hall and Oates!!!

Playing Led Zeppelin always reminds me of being a kid and playing in my room every day after school. Every day!!! Bonham was a driving force on this record. Once again, I removed the original drums and recorded mine. I tracked them in the same style with distant mics. Very little EQ and Compression. Trying to just let the drums speak. I snuck in my '76 Supraphonic in homage to Bonzo.

Once again, I removed the original drums and re-tracked mine. Changes from Yes. Alan White is one of my big heroes. Once of the first drummers I was aware of after hearing the Yessongs record. Everything was on 10 on this record. The great addition of Trevor Rabin and what amounts to a perfect Progressive Rock hit!!! Alan figures out how to groove in 17/8. The ending is my favorite part when he...

The later half of the 90's I was in a band with Blues Saraceno and Erik Topolski called Transmission OK. We managed to make an album that sadly fell victim to record industry. It was released but just as it was released the label folded. Thanks! Anyway, it was a pretty damn good record if I do say so, myself. We used to open our shows with this song. I bought this Yamaha Rick Marotta Hip Gig kit a while back but until now I haven't had a chance to pull it out and mess with it. It's a lot of fun and sounds pretty amazing for such small drums. It's the 10 year anniversary of the Spock's Beard album Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep. This is the opening song Hiding Out from the main disc, as opposed to the fancy package that had additional songs that probably should've just been a whole different record. Ted Leonard wrote it. He did a quick reworking to make more in line with the SB vibe. Unlike most SB records, we actually gathered...

This is the original Misty Mountain Hop minus John Bonham's drums. I re-tracked my drums to the edited file. I used iZotope RX 10. It's a vintage Yamaha kit in Bonham sizes. 26x14 kick, 14x10 rack tom, 16 and 18 floors. The snare is an actual 1976 Ludwig 14x6.5 Supraphonic. The cymbals are all Sabian. Yes ... I realize, aside from the snare, it's all little sacrilege. I happen to endorse Yamaha...

    • @jimmy_keegan_drums
      @jimmy_keegan_drums 24 дня назад

      Hey Jon, thanks for starters and Happy New Year! About getting the drums sound ... okay, first it's matter of understanding how it was done in the first place. It's just me and while there are no samples on this track, I'm not against them and have used them for mix sessions. All the toms have the bottom heads off. Phil's kit had different depths so they will sound a little different. He also used Remo Diplomat heads on the 8 and 10" heads with Ambassadors on the rest. I'm using Aquarian Classic Clears on all the toms. 2 mics on the kick, one (ATM-25) close to the beater for attack, one (AT-4047) just outside the drums for depth. Snare had 2 dynamic mics, HH has a condenser, pretty standard. Toms all have ATM-230, very similar to Sennheiser 421s. Condenser OHs. That's the easy part. In the room are 4 mics. A center Ribbon over the kit EQ-ed like a room mic. A center ribbon about 6' out from the kit with compression and full range EQ. This mic is not gated so between the 2 ribbons, I get a full range sound on the kit. Cymbals ring out and so on. There is also a pair of AT05045 mics in the room and they are heavily gated and compressed. These mics are mixed and then sent to a final buss for some more compression and a bit of final EQ as a set. This gives me a decent sound but as I don't have a big beautiful room like The Farm where they tracked this, I have IR reverbs. It so happens, I have the IK Multimedia Farm simulation. So between that and a few other simulation tricks I ran the drum close mics through the sims rooms and then did a similar gate and compression effect and there you have it. About as close as I could get it under the circumstances and not being Phil and all. His hands play into a great deal. Hugh Padgham is a brilliant engineer so the fact that you think it sounds close is a huge compliment!

      @@jimmy_keegan_drums Happy New Year! Thanks for the great description of this magic! You obviously know what you're doing with mics and placement, gear, etc., not to mention you've definitely got some chops! Yes, huge compliments to you, because my ears could swear you had perhaps mixed in some of the original drums. I've only started mic'ing and mixing my acoustic drums over the last couple years, and there are SO MANY variables involved, as you obviously know. How did you gather so many details about how the original sound was produced? Is this publicly available info? Again, awesome playing and sound - love it!!!

    Loved it, Jimmy. One take-no edit, you removed the bottom heads from the toms to get the authentic sounds. You're right that it's not a difficult part but the devil is in the details and this had all the right ones as feel and tone are ignored by many who cover these things. Loved the flam triplets right before the spoken section too. I spent no shortage of time when I was 18 learning the stuff from TOTT and previous ones we covered in a band I was in at the tie and appreciate the focus on getting it right.

    • @jimmy_keegan_drums
      @jimmy_keegan_drums 24 дня назад

      Yeah, the "Swiss" triplet fill is one of my favs. The other is the Flam Tap in the second verse running down the toms. He just has so many moments where I get giddy. The song Hand To Hand on his first solo record was a consideration. He does the same Flam Tap fill and then there's the big dramatic fill going into the outro that just floors me. It's why I love having a lot of toms in my set up. Sure I'll shrink it down for around town gigs but when I'm out with one of my Prog projects, 5 toms at least.

      Reminds me too, at the NEC in Birmingham, it was Phils birthday and the band kept playing tricks on him, that quiro/cowbell/Banks solo bit, they came in on something like that "and" but Phil didnt, he stood there, hands on his hips looking at Tony. They did it with Abacab too, he counted everyone in and jumped for "four", everyone else came in on the "and", hilarious for those who caught it!
