250 Mile Bikepacking Race In Flagstaff Arizona
The Coconino 250 bike packing race is a unique adventure. Starting in Flagstaff AZ, the race does not have a sign-up list or a cost to enter. You show up at a restaurant and whomever is there at the start time, is in the race. We had a fun time on this challenging route, but we had several setbacks along the way. Entire parts of the trail being washed out required backtracking to get around. Several prescribed forest fire burns created a pretty blah air quality that caused issues on our 4th day. In-all, it was an interesting adventure!

Bikepacking the Arizona Trail - Flagstaff to Grand Canyon & Back
Просмотров 12 тыс.Год назад
4 day bikepacking trip along the Arizona Trail. Riding from Flagstaff, we successfully reached Tusayan AZ, about 100 miles away, in two days. It rained all day on the second day and made the riding a bit slow going. On the way back we mainly stuck to gravel roads and did 77 miles on days 3 and 4. www.strava.com/activities/9920287774

Great Red Book Pitch 1: Red Rocks Nevada

Point of View via Helmet GoPro of The Great Red Book in Red Rock Canyon Nevada. Fantastic climb! I lost the footage of the second pitch unfortunately. Took a few minutes to figure out the left traverse to the patina flakes, rather than continuing up the corner, is the way to go. Even if you do this climb as a single pitch, it's worth the hike! www.mountainproject.com/route/105732647/great-red-book

The Arizona Traileggers hosted a group run to the Grand Canyon on May 11th, 2019. The group started down South Kaibab to Phantom Ranch. The group split up. Some heading back up to the South Rim via Bright Angel directly, while others continued on to Clear Creek plateau. In total, runners topped the south rim with 17, 22 and 25 miles depending on what routes they took. Special thanks to all who ...

Cool video. Sorry, I don't like your partner. He's hiding something from you. Just a hunch.
This is my favorite section of the trail.
Well done, gents! 🍻
It was fun to get a glimpse into what you guys are up to. Thank goodness the beard shrank at the finale of the video!
Buckle your helmet!
That would be nice
Great video! Did you say climbing 9k feet on day 1?? Wow thats hard at 7-8k feet if elevation with that gear. Impressive! Did you intentionally ride with helmet unbuckled? Overall a tremendous effort. Since you have a house there are you acclimated to the elevation. I always struggle when im riding atound flag. Im in PHX so the elecation always gets me up there.
Why the single bolt anchors, instead of just clipping the other bolt to make the whole system redundant? Rad climb, and beautiful place!
Hi, Sweet trip! I am looking to do the same ride this March. Did you follow the Arizona trail the whole way or venture off on the way there? On the way back what was your route? Would you mind sharing yoru gaia or strava track? Thanks!!!
Here is the strava route. You can convert to route and download the GPX. We took the AZT from Flag to the South Rim, then took a more direct gravel route on the way back. It’s possible to do the whole way back in a single day. it was 74+ miles back and we did a route with some hills and elevation gain. www.strava.com/activities/9920287774
This was great fun. Highly recommended! We did it without lights!
Whoa! Didn’t even know this existed.
That looks like so much fun man!! You’re making me wanna go there.
Great video, I hiked that in October nobo and am thinking bout doing your loop by bike. What camera were you using?
The camera I used is a DJI Action 4 on both a chest mount and the included tripod rig. Its a capable camera and I appreciate the hands free. Going NoBo on the AZT with a weighted bike is a bit of a chore. The rocky single track up to the base of Snowbowl is never fun, but with a 65+ lb bike it was particularly rough.
Does the follower have to do the same pendulum maneuver?
Long answer is kind of.. the second comes off the belay stance and has to deal with the rope stretch drop. At the bottom of the stretch, the 2nd should only need to swing a few feet to reach the chicken heads. It’s quite fun! Alternatively, if the second is good at hard slab, they can leave the belay and traverse right on thin slab, with some positive edges, and get to the more substantial chicken heads about 25 feet over. Both options are spicy and fun.
🚴👍♥️
Greetings fellow 600x owner. I’ve used an Aeroe rack on front and back and had a little difficulty with front rack. I see you moved yours below the cables … does it rub on the frame at all ? Considering GDMBR next year. Might visit a friend in Prescott and ride that area too. Thanks for posting
The 600X is legit ❤! The Aero front holder works pretty well when you clear the cables at the top of the rack. It does not rub on the frame at all, and I do have it rotated down a fair ways. From the stock 600X I added a slightly longer stem, which may help with the frame rub on the head tube compared to the stock stem length? Not sure. I’m hitting the GDMBR in 2025. At least thats the plan. If you want a companion for your Prescott rides send me a DM.
@@nateyoung4869 Maybe the longer stem is the trick. did you really crank down on the tightness of the bar-straps? Piss poor design - imo. Similar racks have bullet proof mounts, but good to know you've had success , thx!
Awesome trip, thanks for sharing.
Man! Some gorgeous scenery! 😍 You are amazing. So glad you made it through the storm. Ride like the wind! 😁
That was put together really well! Excited for the next one.
Great vid! Looks like a blast!
Holy Crap
I would love to climb with you - I think you are at AZ on the Rocks, correct?
Good place I had visited in 2019 and had a chance to see St. Mount Helen
I'm late to the party, (but that's what you get for not shooting a video about make-up, off grid, or van life.....right? No RUclips promotion) and I like all the narrative and that you took time to really capture the canyon with stills and nice slow pans. Excellent work, and having run and shot video for my channel there, I know how much extra time it takes. That's a long haul to finish by going up S. Kaibab, plus adding on the rim trail! Yikes! Great work, all 3 of you! I'm looking forward to doing this loop in a couple weeks (Apr '21) and then getting in 1 or 2 R2R's this year. Love running there.
Check that #1 placement on pitch 2! Lil wide eh?
The #1 Placement at 3:30 looks solidly placed to me. C4’s with the dual axel have a wider camming range. The whole crack fairs out in the front and back so it made finding placements a bit tough.
Wow, thank you guys! This was my first lead climb ever, now I am itching to go back. Thank you for making it safer for us all!
What are the jams like on this? Tight 3's, loose 3's, right down the middle...?
3’s of all variations. Wide cupped hands to narrow fists. Depends on your hand size honestly. We took 6 or 7 #3’s and that crack ate them all up. Takes a #1 and #2 at the beginning of the crack, but everything else is #3.
interesting, thanks for the vid
Lol. Conga lines and GoPros galore...kind of what I expected from this climb. Looks fun, though!
gotta a question here. I'm learning my self how to bolt and eventually rebolt routes. Do you guys have it or would know any one how has a full procedure process on rebolting? Everywhere I turn I only sedd people rebolting with glue in bolts.
CABRP has been Rebolting this area of Central Arizona with glue-ins bolts because of the type of rock involved. Rhyolite is pretty porous and tends to flake / chip easily under stress. Mechanical wedge and sleeve bolts have been used in these Rhyolite areas from the start of route development there since glue-ins were not popular and fairly more complicated. However, in Rhyolite, the 2-part glue creates a chemical and friction bond in the rock that has no equal. Obviously glue-ins are more complicated to install and have a less forgiving installation window compared to mechanical bolts, which is why they aren’t used as prolifically as mechanical bolts. Anyway, as far as process and procedure guides go, CABRP has internal documents that we use for CABRP members and those tha have taken our class. We won’t publish or share this material to the general public because it creates a liability. This is also the reason you have had trouble finding this kind of material online. If we published a How-To guide and someone out in the public misses a step and an accident happens, the whole process is at risk. Our suggestion would be to find a local Rebolting group in your area and seeing if you can volunteer. Most of the current CABRP members were fairly new to bolting / route development / Rebolting up until a couple years ago when CABRP started. Sorry we can’t provide a more concise answer but the climbing community is awesome and if you want to learn please find a local group you can participate in. If you are in Arizona please visit our website (CABRP.org) and Central Arizona Bolt Replacement on Facebook. We would love to have you out to volunteer and learn from our crew!
@@nateyoung4869 thank you for the answers on such short time. I currently live in Brasilia, Brazil and the local community is still on its early stages of any rebolting programs since rock climbing in the region is only around 30 years old, and our exceptionaly dry weather and mostly composed of limestone has not created any acidents, but from o have been studying I see a need for a drastic change on this in the foreseeable future. I really wish I could have the opportunity (*cof* money *cof*) to travel at Arizona and experience the climbing there, if ever this chance I would love to volunteer and learn more about the community and the program
did you guys bolt the runout on the second pitch?
josh hendrickson it was a bolt-for-bolt replacement. If you’re talking about the top section with the crack (cam and nut placement) then no, that still needs gear.
nice, looks like fun
Thank you guys for replacing the crusty hardware out there! I should be moving out during 2020 and would love to get involved.
Austin Hancock We would LOVE to have you help out. If you haven’t already, find us on Facebook at Central Arizona Bolt Replacement and like the page. We are starting the first weekend of public Rebolting of the pond area on January 12th.
Thanks for some insight into the views. gunna try this thing soon
Impressive
Good crack work. Nice vid!
Rewatched for the first time in a long while as I haven't really been doing this for some time. Well, I've never met a climbing partner that was as friendly and instructive as Nate. Guess I was a little bit spoiled. Hope all is well, bud. Those were some good times we had. Thanks for showing everyone that I can learn to do some pretty cool stuff afterall, with the right instruction.
