Hi, if you are interested in ham radio and portable operations then you've come to the right place. I like operating my ham radio gear outdoors in all kinds of conditions. I'm doing a lot of Parks On The Air as well as showing some of the gear I use. Stick around and enjoy the videos. My callsign is N3WS. I hope to hear you on the air. 73
Gaming Drills and Exercises for Ham Radio
I been thinking about this subject a lot since I made that initial video and I think I've come up with a solution that is free and far more easier to implement.

Another Vlog. I won't be monetizing from now on. I feel like youtube ads are getting out of hand. I find myself watching less and less. If you feel like making a donation, help my club. Make a donation or become a member. My club does some good stuff and it would help out. Find me on "X" - x.com/commsonawire - I might just start putting content there. Noisy solar controllers

I did a little work with a couple of solar controllers. They both generated noise, but it was an easy fix with a few wraps around a clip on ferrite core (Mix 31).

The club I belong to did another build party. These have been a lot of fun and just a great way to get members together. If you belong to a club I highly recommend doing something like this. wa3com.com/presentations/150W_Dummy_Load.pdf

I do a quick POTA activation with the TX-500. I've had this radio a while, broke it once, my own fault. I explain in the video.

R8LDJ, 73 ! ! !
techminds did a review on a clone of one of these. Very cool ill have to get one for my hermes.
Another video reading the spec sheets in front of a camera... There is also a few good people in the USA, do not hold their government killing ppl around the world for decades, against the people... ICOM IC 705, "much more advanced" I would disagree with that. Don't understand why you are dissing the TX500 for key work. Still, thx for the video.
Just add the weight of the BP-500!
Icom 705 Best rig
Icom705 is in my backpack always 73 from kb2uew
That's very wise words, about the war. Just ordered tx500+carry bag with logo+bp500 battery pack for 650 pounds, probably ICOM can't beat that)😂
These are great practice tips. I seem to listen to CW in the car more than music. I guess it is music to the ear. Thanks for the tips. 73s
Thanks, this is great and I'm taking it to our EC. KD9PDE
You used WD40 to lubricate the tower, WD40 is for water displacement. You should use CLP or 3-in-1 to lubricate instead of WD40
I dig this - would be fun to just play the game with a few friends. Let me know if you want make a 4 play version and we can play via HF and live stream it!
I've actually been doing more work on this. I haven't hosted it anywhere, but I have a web page that generates the resources instead of rolling dice. I still have some more ideas I'm trying to incorporate.
@@TangoOscarMikeN3WS let me know, sounds like fun
Good afternoon, can you tell me which coaxial cable is inside the antenna please, I have one and would like to recover it, thank you. 73 de CT1EYF.

I'm sorry, but I no longer have the antenna. It was destroyed during a wind storm when it was hit by a falling limb. It wasn't a normal type of coax. It was like RG-8 but had a very thick jacket.
@@TangoOscarMikeN3WS Thank you very much, I will try to get it with coax with RG-8. Have a good day and thank you for answering, 73 from CT1EYF.
I looked here in Portugal and there are 2 types of this RG-8 cable, both for 50 homes, but the one in your video is the mesh made of copper?
I bought this antenna two months ago to take on vacation. Spent a week in CA at a local hotel chain, 2nd floor room. Running an ICOM 705 at 10 watts with the mag loop antenna on a tripod. I was operating FT 8 mode inside the hotel, over a period of 5 days I made 65 QSO’s on 4 different bands. I was able to catch East Coast, West Coast and Mid West stations. Plus several contacts with Japan and Australia. I highly recommend this antenna for portable operating when confined to a hotel room indoors, it does the job…. Quality of the antenna is good too.
All of there stuff is well made. It just isn't really doesn't work with changes frequencies often. They are interesting to use.
Another great idea!
Thank you! Cheers!
I really like your ideas for "gamifying" drills like this. It has a ton of potential. This one, for whatever reason, makes me think of watching th eold MASH re-runs as a kid when Radar would be on the radio bartering with the other MASH units for supplies. Great idea!
MASH, you are right. They were always bartering for something.
I own both, and love both. TX-500/BP-500 is great for backpack trips (hike with tent any weather). IC-705 is premium qrp radio and any other travels it in my suitcase. Both do digital: FT8, RTTY or CW. IC-705 everything is premium comparing to TX-500
The sandbags is a good tip. I've used gallon jugs a few times when the ground was frozen or I was in a parking lot.
I bought my TX-500 a few months after they were introduced, and I waited five months to get it. I was well worth the wait! I guess that I've had it for over three years now and I still love that little radio. It's built like a brick but operates as well as I could have ever hoped for. I run it using an EFHW and regularly check into a few daily nets. Although I get stomped on by the guys with high power (welcome to QRP world!), I still get through on most days. I always get signal reports that I'm readable, even if my signal is barely above the noise. The audio compression feature is amazing. At this point, I've sworn off QRO (20 watts or greater). I just don't feel that I need it. My tiny little battery lasts forever (110ma receive current). The display is super visible. I'm still running the original firmware, but I guess that there are lots of improvements if I want them. After **struggling** with an original FT-817, this rig is the exact opposite. It does what I want, when I want with NO drama. I must admit that I was nervous buying a radio that didn't have the Icom / Yaesu brand, but now I's really super happy that I did. What an **AMAZING** radio.
The biggest firmware update for me was the voice recorder. When you are doing a contest or POTA activation it is really handy. Yes, the TX audio seems to be better on this radio than any other radio.
First you called up some Month Python and then the cocktail joke. Excellent
Goats
I have actually looked into it. Even talked to one of the locals who has them. I had to cut into it anyhow to get it fenced in. He talked me out of it.
Permission to secure was always a welcome transmission.
Love the hat.
Hi Tom, I like watching these Vlogs. Keep them coming. You and Laura stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Thanks, this was helpful. I haven't used solar yet, but it's something I've been thinking about.
Thank you. Time to do it myself. You saved me many hours!
I like this idea - we have been struggling to come up with engaging scenarios. I'd love to see what the deck looks like. Marty, WK0E
Where do I find the game? A dungeons and dragons type game. Great idea.
Just a concept at the moment.
Thanks for the video. Can this method be used to run WSJT-X wirelessly?
It can, but the more I used it the more frustrated I got with it. I think the virtual sound card was giving me issues. I would have to reset everything a few times before it would work.
Hi Tom, That's a great way to get rid of the stumps short of digging them out. Glad Augi is back to being himself. Hope he stays that way. Have seen a few of those lantern flies here and kill them every chance I get. Don't know what you could do in your situation. You and Laura stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Thanks for the summary of the two radios. I also own both rigs and it's nice to know there's other hams conflicted like me of which one to buy...so I bought both too! I added the BP500 battery pack to mine so my TX-500 isn't as svelte as it once was but it's as capable as the IC-705 with its built in battery pack. For POTA I bring both so depending what mood I'm in that day that's the rig I use. Best 73, K9AT
Good idea, you might consider integrating the various ICS forms. Your ‘served agencies’ will appreciate them.

Tom what a great idea 💡 have a go and make a set then take them to the Arrl and Ares great to get feed back 73 brother
Cool idea! Sharing this with local friends. 👍
Very informative video. I have not started using solar yet maybe one day. 73s.
do you have a diagram of the 36:1?

Your club seems so cool. The local club here just caters to county search and rescue and cuts weeds at the club house. super lame.
We don't have a club house, which is why the build was in my garage. All it takes is one motivated person to get the ball rolling. We have some good people in the club.
Thank you for this. I downloaded the PDF and ordered the resistors. Can't wait to build it!
Very nice build. I think it's great your club does projects like this.
Very awesome club activity! 73!

Excellent video! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on both of these great radios. I was admiring the protective covers you put both radios, could you please share a link to them?? Thanks!

I learned a bit there…. Thanks!
Glad to hear it!
Have you tried the Buddystick with the screen for a ground plane?
No. It was a loaner. I don't have it anymore. I don't know how well that would work with the elevated feed point. Would be interested to see.
Hi Tom and Laura, Enjoyed these short videos on your anniversary trip. That WV country sure is gorgeous. Both of you stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Another cool adventure. Thanks for sharing your trip with us.
Looks like a nice place to visit. It is fantastic to see your dog on the boat with you. Dead Bodies? Have a safe trip.
In the game Fallout the lake is drained and there are skeletons with cement shoes in the lake bed.
Just a side note on the sheet bend. It is called that because in sailing, line/ropes that are attached to the corner of sails are called "sheets." With this knot you can tie a rope to the corner of a piece of cloth (like a sail) and turn that rope into a "sheet." In knots the term "bend" is when you tie two ropes together. So sheet bend is a completely descriptive term/name.
I knew it was something like that. Thanks for the information, it puts it in perspective. I used it to tie the corners of a tarp down.
Tangooscarmike! hello~ Enjoyed. outstanding editing-
Hey, thanks!
