Hike, Ham Radio, and Hammock?

Chapters below: Chair vs Hammock? I got out for an early Parks on the Air Activation. The trails were overgrown and soaked with dew, Horses did some damage to the soft ground, poison ivy everywhere, and I walked through lots of spiderwebs. Instead of my usual chair I took my new hammock. It worked really well and it is easy to setup. I could see this becoming a thing. Not-affiliated, but here i...

I built a linked endfed to handle a little more power
Просмотров 222Месяц назад
I'm mainly a qrp guy and all my antennas are made with pretty small toroids. Now that I have this amplifier I needed a portable antenna that could handle a little more power. I found this 3D print on thingiverse.com www.thingiverse.com/thing:5448369 and here is the insulator I used: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4074105 I had the parts so I made a linked end fed half wave with a 49:1 using DX engin...

Swapping out my antenna
Просмотров 1682 месяца назад
Decided to finally switch my antenna out. I've been using a 49:1 for years, but the club build we did of a 36:1 has been working better for me, even though the 49:1 had the better location. It's time to give the 36:1 the better location. Also talk about the new PoLo logging app. ham2k.com/apps/polo/

A recent article suggests inserting a 200-400pf cap to ground. They evidenced a lowered SWR.
Looks like a great time! Thanks for sharing it.
Very cool! Looks small and portable too.
I was kind of shocked how small and light it was. I'm still a qrp guy by heart, but I'll be running W3R special event.
Faraday fabric works just as good as the screen, maybe better and fabric is easier to transport. I picked up faraday fabric 43 inches by 118 inches for $27.27 with tax on Amazon
I've seen where people sew that stuff to a piece of cloth to make it more durable. I might have to think about that.
Interesting...could you provide the ebay link that you chose as there are several versions listed of variable pricing...Thanks Maurice
The listing is no longer there. I would recommend getting it from Chelegance. Their other products are well made and it is cheaper than what I paid on Ebay. chelegance.com/products/cntou-jcase705-protective-case-for-ic-705-waterproof-pota-sota/
wow that standby current consumption is veeery low! cool!
Thanks for watching. it has been a great little amp.
Looks like an amazing amp. Thanks for sharing this with us. 73s
Thanks for watching!
It was a hot one for sure! Some clubs canceled due to the heat. If we didn't have a building with A/C we wouldn't have had a field day either! Great Job!
It seems we always get heat or heavy rains. This year was a rough one for sure.
Surely you didn't have that loud generator going all night!!
Yes. White noise. It is not really not that loud. It is a steady Humm. Blocks out everything else. You don't even notice it after a little while.
Thanks Tom. Looks like y'all had fun. Great video
It was! Thanks
Thanks for recording!
I wish I would record more of the actual operating, but I get so busy and some people don't want to be on camera.
Great video as always. It was great how hard everyone was working together. It is a super Ham Radio club WACOM! Thanks to everyone for a great field day weekend. 73s
It's chaotic, but everyone pulls together. Thanks for all your help.
I never new about that the long brim hats , you learn something new everyday. Except you're sitting in shorts , so I thought that would defeat the object . Anyway love your garden wish I had one like it, great show thanks for letting us see this, take care from ENGLAND 🇺🇲🇬🇧💯👍
If I'm constantly moving they don't seem to bother my legs much. I think they go for the sweat on my head/face. I do wear long pants and shirts when I'm out most of the time. Without the hat they fly in my face, eyes and ears. I'm pretty much bald on top and they will bite me on the top of my head, which isn't pleasant. That kind of hat is a must. I have a bug hood net that goes over those types of hats, but almost never need to use it.
Nice! You should consider printing a backcover so you have a real box! And you don't need the wrap anymore if it's all boxed :)
I did see this full enclosure. www.printables.com/model/622210-icom-ic-705-transport-rugged-box. The cover I printed took 14 hours. I imagine this would take a few days.
I ordered a JCase 705 from a dealer in my country. Unfortunately, both the KEY, TUNER and SEND/ALC connectors (TRS) turned out to be incorrectly connected. They were connected as mono, although it should be stereo. (Chinese junk?)
I had issue with my mic connector and had to figure out a replacement for it. I still like the case for road trip protection.
Awesome setup! Looks like the perfect park for it too.
Almost nobody goes out in this area. Over grown, ticks, terrain and more, keeps most people away, perfect for filming.
😅
It was in the 90's up here in WNY today. Stay cool and have fun!
Gonna be a hot one this weekend in Tennessee as well. At least no major rain in the forecast. Good tips.
You sold me! Time to take a road trip to HRO in Portland Oregon and pick one up! Ive been going back and forth over the Elecraft kx2 and thr 705.
You won't be disappointed. It is a great radio.
👍🏻 Excellent tips, Tom - have fun!
AWESOME TOM, THE BANDS WERE JUST RIGHT FOR USING 10W. which antenna were you using? thanks 73s de n3lou
A 49:1 end fed I built. Most of the signal I got were really loud. I usually have issues getting New York, but those guys were blowing my ears off.
#HammockRadio 😁🤘
I'm so tempted to take a nap.
That was a great activation. Thanks for the shout out. You have more energy than I. Thanks again for another great video. See you Friday will you announce a time for setup? 73s
I'm send something out. I'm thinking a Saturday morning setup might be better due to the heat.
Hi Tom, Missed another one of your activations. Received the HamAlert, but wasn't home and didn't return for several hours. I'll get you one of these days. 🙂 You and the family stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Maybe next time. I need to get out more.
Nice job Tom Vy 73s Don 🎙
Thanks Don.
Do you have a wire clip to screen from the ground on coax?? Makes a difference!
I was grounded to the shield.
Thanks Mike for directing me here. Thanks Tom. Great video.
It was great seeing the use of the different knots in the field.
I never realized about the flies with wide-brimmed hats. I've got a big head, but I'll look for one of those hats that fits.
Thanks, the playlist looks helpful. I'll follow your lead and cut a piece of paracord to have nearby and practice a few of these knots.
I think if I throw my lines into a tree like you did I would throw my back out. I enjoyed this video as it continued from the last of building the antenna, and it's a nice follow-up to see it working. Thanks for sharing this information. 73s
Great video. I may start referring to you as the antenna man. I really enjoy how much detail you put into your videos and how you show each step of setting up the antennas. All the best and keep the videos coming. 73s
Every thing I want to see is happening below the camera view.
Thanks for sharing the knots. It'll take me a lot of practice but it's cool to see in action.
Thanks for the video, we can feel your excitement!! You mentioned a perfect case, which one were you referring to. 73
Yum! I recently purchased that same pad. Thanks for the neat idea for securing it to my pack! 73 de KJ7LLX
I recognize that throw technique!
Yeah that DX stealth wire is great for permanent installations, but it’s only 7 strands so it curls back up on itself and has some memory. Super tough. But the Wireman version (which I think is Davis Rf) is fine stranded and thus has less memory.
Hi Tom, Those flies sure can be aggravating. Nice you were able to add that extra link and get the antenna to work better on the bands. What amp are you going to use? 73 WJ3U
I'm working on a video for the amp.
I built a 36:1 separate 2 turn primary over the top of the secondary. On 80m I got an swr of 1.2 on the low end. This surprised me. After playing around from 160m through 6m using my ft-991a internal tuner I easily got 1.3 or less on all bands and made some decent contacts. Thid requires more playing with
Thinking about the differences in your two antennas brought up some questions and some thoughts you may or may not have already considered. Are they the same length? What bands were tested? One difference stands out clearly and that is some of the “36:1” antenna is near the ground. The feedpoint of most if not all antennas varies with the height above ground. The impedance out of a 49:1 would be 2450 and the impedance out of a 36:1 would be 1800. Low antennas tend to have lower impedances. As far as performance is concerned, if both antennas are the same length, they should have same directive pattern but if not pointed the same way one would outperform the other in some directions. Height above ground is the only factor that determines radiation angle of a horizontal antenna. So the low antenna if much lower than the high one would have a higher angle lobe. Regarding horizontal directivity, a quarter wave high an antenna does not have much directivity but at half wave high it does. Also the patterns are definitely different between an antenna operated as a halfwave on its fundamental frequency than on a harmonic.
With all of my end fed antennas, I've found they work best when the feedpoint is 2-3 feet off the ground. If it is touching the ground they don't perform as well. the 36:1 is typically a few feet longer than the 49:1. I typically do my comparisons on 10, 20 and 40. I've tested the antennas in the same place and I still feel the 36:1 is a better performer and it is more broad banded. I'll still use 49:1 for field deployments as it is just easier to deal with. I'm by no means an expert on endfeds. I just followed the designs of others and built one.
@@TangoOscarMikeN3WS thanks for the reply. By work best I think you mean better signal strength. I ask because sometimes it means easier to tune to a low SWR. There are so many variables with antennas I can have two “ good” antennas but switching back and forth forth get different results with time of day, season, distance and other unknown things! Doing it enough over many years I have a feel for which one will work best when but still get surprised a lot. Thankfully most work well enough to have fun and work DX.
Looks like a great portable setup. Glad you made all the contacts that you needed. 73s
Thanks 👍
What is your amplifier?
It is a Juma PA100-D. I'll do a true video review when I get a chance, but it is working great with the 705.
Very interesting video are you a member of an emergency organisation? We have something called RayNet in the UK 🇬🇧 but I don’t think they do things like this in my area. Good to see winlink working
I am part of ARES here in the US. The Amateur Radio Emergency Service. I'm the lead for my area. We normally do a spring and fall exercise, but this was something special.
Auggie can wear a device with a gps and report back to you where he's located automatically!
I thought about that, but I tested with a couple t-echos and couldn't get signal 1/2 mile from my house through the woods. I was thinking a little APRS transmitter might be better.
Nicely done. I prefer the Zeppelin bend over Sheet bend
And I just learned a new knot. I'll hold off judgement until I get better at it.
Looks like a fun time.
I like to remind myself: f I only did things when the conditions were good, I wouldn't do much. We all need to get out there and make the most of it when we can. For who knows if there will be another chance. Tell Augie he's a good boy from me!
Will do. I thought the water might be to cold for him, so he stayed home. He got a special Bark Box when we got home.
