Fed Up With Landscape Photography? Try This Instead
The intimate landscape can hold so much for anyone either disenchanted with, or maybe unable to enjoy, landscape photography for whatever reason. In this video I go through the steps I take in finding and making those close up scenes I love so much.

    You have an f/1.0 lens? Or is that a tiny white speck of leaf litter I’m mistaking for a decimal point and the aperture is actually f/10? I need one of those leaves to place a bright red ladybug on that I’ll try a macro shot with today. All leaf litter here is frozen under several inches of snow. Your dark editing technique works really well with leaf litter. 💜💜

    some of the points you go over really sound a little weird or as if you havent used it that much? D90 actually is my main camera and im really baffled when people are afraid to bump up the iso for example. i usually just have auto iso on and i let it happily go to iso 3200. in a pinch even the H1 mode wich reads out as iso 6400 on the raw file and the images are still completely usable especially with the adition of ai noisereduction and especially if you go after more of a film like look to begin with where you want to have grain anyways. when i shoot black and white for example, i pretty much put the D90 on iso3200 or more on purpose as a stylistic choice even tho i dont have to just to get that grainy look i want in my Black and white images. combine that with the fact 99% of people nowadays only watch photos on their smartphone via instagram anyways, you dont even see much of it at all in 1350x1080 resolution. Also the liveview mode is actually quite nice and usable if you use it in a certain way. The AF in liveview is unusable. dont use it. BUT i use the D90s liveview all the time for manualfocus lenses (wich i have no issues focusing with) and especially if you use zone focus and you dont focus at all and just estimate distance, you can literally just watch the liveview screen for composition and handle it almost like a mirrorless camera while aperture prio and auto iso do the rest. it actually blows my mind just how little the D90 compromises on me compared to a mirrorless

    • @duringthemeanwhilst
      @duringthemeanwhilst 13 часов назад

      I used one as my main camera for around a year or so in 2011/12. I then faced buying another one as I had such fond memories but found I just wasn't using it (too many cameras). I produced one of my best-selling images with the D90 and. Tamron 10-24 lens so I'd say I was more than happy with it. But it's now old and outdated and while fine for Instagram and the like is really lacking I feel (my opinion) in certain areas and low light / shadow recovery was one of them. I love old Nikons, and have a D700 and D800e, both of which have their own charm (especially the D700). I guess I just had no room for the 90 any more, but still have all the memories I made with it :-)

      hi with that configuration yes you can still access the bag from the side, but the opening is slightly smaller. I don't know whether your specific camera would fit, but the available space in that config is approx 27x18cm. Hope this helps 🙂

  • @dheerajchidambaranathan
    @dheerajchidambaranathan 6 дней назад

    I just got a D700 two days back and there's something about it that makes it unique. If you notice in your images, the color saturation and tonality of how color changes are shown on the D700 are better than the D800 (in my opinion, of course) at the cost of lower resolution. This can be confirmed when you do a B&W monochrome shot with some orange/red digital filters in camera or using NX Studio in post.

    • @dheerajchidambaranathan
      @dheerajchidambaranathan 6 дней назад

      Also, if you look closely in the first image, the D800 clips the highlights badly right behind the central focus of that loofa like thing whereas the D700 maintains the highlights at the expense of slightly darker shadows that can be easily brought out in post, if needed. In the last image, the reds and greens of the mushroom thingies are much more saturated on the D700 than the D800.

    • @duringthemeanwhilst
      @duringthemeanwhilst 6 дней назад

      thanks for the detailed and analytical comment :-) I'd have expected the higher resolution D800 to handle shifts in colour and tonality better than the 700 so it's interesting to hear you say different. I also found that the D800 consistently metered the scene around 1/3rd of a stop darker, resulting in a longer shutter speed hence the blown out highlights you saw. both cameras had exactly the same settings dialled in (f8, aperture priority, auto WB, ISO 100). I had to use the extended low setting on the D700 so whether that had an effect I don't know.

    • @dheerajchidambaranathan
      @dheerajchidambaranathan 6 дней назад

      @ : : you would normally think so, right? There is something about the 12 mp sensor and their physics plus algos on the D700 that makes the tones really pleasing to the eye including landscape shots. The colors somehow transition very smoothly and if you meter the scene right, even at high ISOs, the noise is more film like grain than digital color noise. A lot of people still swear by the D700 for this specific reason, I believe.

  • @kennygo8300
    @kennygo8300 6 дней назад

    I have the D700 and D800. Like you, I find more detail with my D800. The D700 is used when I'm taking pictures of people. The D800 is for everything else. This is working nicely for me.

    • @duringthemeanwhilst

  • @haakon_b

    Thanks for the comparison. I have a D300 and I love the layout and feel, but the images are quite a let-down compared to my newer cameras. But I can't let it go. I am curious to know your opinion if in your actual use with printing and posting your images if the 36 meg will make a difference compared to 12 or 24.

    • @duringthemeanwhilst
      @duringthemeanwhilst 6 дней назад

      the D300 is another of Nikon's legendary cameras, rightly regarded for its excellent IQ. though compared to more modern gear it's probably not as sharp, but I actually prefer the softer aesthetic. there are more D800E videos planned Jay, and no doubt I'll be printing an image at some stage 🙂. I can x=certainly do a comparison between it and the D700 print wise, but as the largest size I can print is 19" x 13" then 12 MP is already more than enough!

    Most interesting that is Nick, really difficult to choose but overall I guess the 800E showed a better range of tones in the Teasle shot. As for the other images I'd say it was a toss-up which one gives the most pleasing result. The burning question is this; which one will you end up taking out-n-about once you have done testing? Somehow I don't think it will be both!

    • @duringthemeanwhilst
      @duringthemeanwhilst 7 дней назад

      indeed Alan. I don't think you can see the real difference on YT, but even so the cameras are so very close. I'll end up keeping both, and I will take both out with me at least once more for a landscape test. but... I shan't be carrying them! I have a Bethan for that 🙂

    One could also say the d700 still gives comparable shot as photographers claimed when the new D800 was introduced and they asked themselves should I ugrade. Anyway I just upgraded to the hated D7500 with the 16-80 lens. I am quite pleased with the wheight reduction and possibilities as a sort of alternative for the Fuji's. As a long time Canon 5D user, i was intrigued by the D700. I managed to get a really good used copy, boxed and with the grip for £175! I thought the Canons were well built but this Nikon is next level; they have thought of everything. Even the pullout diopter adjustment show how much thought went into it. A button for everything makes it all so tactile. I just have the 50mm 1.8D and the non-D 28mm. People say the 28mm is the worst Nikkor lens but there’s something about the images with this. camera and lens combo; technically flawed, yes but a certain aesthetic that i really like…..a dreamy feel to the images. Great video; thankyou!

      that is a fantastic bargain you bagged there!! I'm very jealous 🙂 I think more and more people are getting tired of the razor sharpness that modern cameras and lenses give. that's why pro or black mist filters are gaining popularity. I remember the made-in-Japan as a put down when I was a kid in the early 80s. But of course it was already more than ten years out of date. And heck, even in the '50s Nikon was making world-leading stuff.

    the question is not "why", but instead it should be "why not!"? man, the D800 is a top of the line flagship professional camera, and now with all the mirrorless flooding the market they can be got at a seriously great price. the camera is just as amazing now as it was when it was introduced, so it is a very sensible choice in my opinion. no need to spend over 2,000 dollars for a mirrorless when you can get a camera that is even better than them at a fraction of the price.

    • @duringthemeanwhilst

      I'm going to agree - in part 🙂 yes the D800 / 800e is a fantastic camera. I shot a D700 (still do) and then a D800 before I went mirrorless (Fujifilm) in 2018 when my D800 fell in the sea 😞 so, yes, I absolutely Leo the D800e and for some it would be all the camera they ever need. But now being older and disabled I need a much lighter kit (well, actually I don't now as my wife or daughter carry it for me!!) but while I was still able to get around a bit the lighter kit, especially the lenses, were a Godsend to me! And even now, in use, there's no way I could hand hold a pro DSLR and long telephoto lens. Were I fitter and younger then I'd absolutely shoot a DSLR still. I still prefer a D700 for macro work 🙂

    China is the new Japan. Just before I finished driving buses for a living we got a bunch of Yutong electric buses. They were better than anything I drove before with the sole exception of an expiremental VanHool Hydrogen bus. Anywho back to cameras, how many megapixels is your computer screen...? 🤔 4k is 8.2 megapixels. (runs away and hides 😂) Enjoy the new toy, looking forward to seeing the results. 📷

      It is 8MP but I might have got 4 of them... OK, I haven't, and I would argue to the death that 12MP is more than adequate 99% of the time. But for macro, where there's a lot of cropping involved, it helps if you start out with much more!

    My family all prefer shots of them from the D700 than any other camera I own of have owned. They are just more pleasant. I've sold my d750 and XT2. I know own a m43 for nature and landscapes ( light and great for distance shots) and the D700 with a few lenses when I don't need to carry them far.

    Have to echo - in my youth, Japan was a source of inexpensive items of questionable quality. But by my late teens, Japan became the main source of photographic and electronic devices. As for DLSR - I still love the satisfying feel of the mirror and shutter when I shoot with my Canon 7d. The X-T20 is easier to carry with a pancake 18mm lens, so it's always with me. But give me a good old DSLR any day.

    When I first started working in retail photography (71/72..!) the thing to look for on good quality cameras was always that little gold label with "JCII" on it, Japan Camera Inspection Institute. Anything before that time pre-dates even me!

    Yes, I remember when seeing “Made in Japan” on a product tag or label meant “steer clear.” Not anymore. And I thought “goat” meant “any of numerous agile, hollow-horned ruminants of the genus Capra, of the family Bovidae, closely related to the sheep, found native in rocky and mountainous regions of the Old World, and widely distributed in domesticated varieties.” 🤷🏼‍♂️
