The (Original) Houghton Weavers - Battle of Hastings Monologue
The Houghton Weavers were my late father's favourite folk group from Lancashire and these videos were recorded by him onto VHS cassette from their show 'Sit Thi Deawn', somewhere between 1978 and 1980.
This is one of the few monologues that I have performed by Tony Berry and assisted by Norman Prince.
He got a great deal of pleasure from both listening to and watching them perform. I hope that you too have even a fraction of the pleasure he did. I also wish to bring an awareness to a new audience of their music.
I now want to extend my sincere gratitude to the Houghton Weavers, whom have given me their full written permission to upload and share these videos on You Tube.
Please feel free to ...

Moved from Lower Broughton to Kersal flats because our house was falling down in the 1960's slum clearance. Lower Kersal was a great place to grow up. The Houghton weavers will be glad to hear Kersal flats have since been blown up.

A little disappointed that the Blackpool Belle wasn't included in their set but I luv em none the less...ps thanks for the cd x

I interviewed Tony from the Houghton weavers on my radio show on Salford city radio 94.4fm a couple of years ago. He was very nice. Then a couple of months later I saw them live for the first time and he mentioned me at his gig after I requested a song for him to sing. I think I chose the ballad " streets of London" lovely people.

I saw them three times and thought they were brilliant, but this song never fails to put a lump in my throat. It sums up my own thoughts perfectly. My Dad died 13 years ago whilst I was holding his hand but like the song says I still miss him so much. A wonderful man that he was.

I took my family to see the Houghton Weavers at Southport in the late 80s. I told Norman that my 11 year old son was given the choice of seeing THE superman film or the Houghton Weavers. Norman was gobsmacked that my son chose them. Lovely songs...lovely memories! Jimmy Hughes (Crosby)

It shows that they have an appeal across the whole spectrum of ages. They lost a lot when Norman left though.

Just like to add I still took my family to see THE Superman film that same week. L.O.L Strange thing is I gave Tony Berry an audio tape that same night of some songs (mostly ballads) that I had wrote. Tony never got back so my confidence as a songwriter has been put on hold for some 35 years now. "Oh well. "

This takes me back to my childhood. We used to watch them every year at Gracie Fields theatre, Rochdale. I was a member of their fan club, had their autographs and we used to play their tapes all the time in the car. Happy memories yet makes me sad for days gone by and people we've lost. Hazel xxx

Went to see these perform last night in Derby. I'm ashamed to admit that I hadn't heard of them prior to my Grandfather inviting me to go to their concert with him, but at 27 I think I have a slight excuse! Excellent evening though, really enjoyed the music.

Thanks for your comments. I do have more from the VHS tapes and I will be uploading songs as my time allows. I can't put up a whole programme though, as the HW have only granted permission to put up small clips (for BBC copyright reasons) and don't want to break the trust that they have put in me - sorry about that.
