    Would you consider this a blues progression in this song you transcribed it from

    • @AmyMantis
      @AmyMantis 29 дней назад

      Good question. It's blues-adjacent, but the progression (I think) is eight bars and it's?\: F Bb7 Bbm F Dm Dm G7 C7 So in Roman numerals, we're in the key of F, we get: I IV7 iv I vi vi V7/V V7 That V7/V can also be written as II7. I look at it as a secondary dominant, hence V7/V Hope this helps!

    The solo, the phrases, sound like horn parts. How many guitarists were around at that time?

    • @AmyMantis
      @AmyMantis Месяц назад

      That’s a good question. I’ll look into it in detail more but you’re right that Charlie sounds like a horn player. Most lead instruments in the early days jazz were horns (trumpet and alto sax) because they could be heard very clearly above the band while the guitar - prior to amplification - didn’t have that same ability.

    I saw a lesson on this (I forget where?!) using the 5 caged shapes. For each one, play the chord using that shape, then play the root note then one of the other 6 notes (here's what the root sounds like after the chord, here's what the 1st sounds like after the chord, .... here is what the 7th sounds like after the chord). You learn the chords/triads in each shape, and overlay the scale.

    Good effort Amy,, typical of Eric this man can make complex riffs look so simple till you try them yourself, noticed just the other day when he played this live, he and his rythem guitarist changed roles, i.e. Eric played rythem and the rythem guitarist quietly played the lead in the background, then changing roles back when the lead guitar solo parts needed to come to the front, really clever to keep the song sounding strong throughout, and no! I don't think this is cheating, it's call being a world renowned professioal artist.

    Great video, Amy! Thanks for sharing your experience and advice. I can personally attest to the topic about using hearing protection. I suffer from severe hearing loss and tinnitus in both ears. It's the typical high-freqency range loss, which is attributable to not wearing proper hearing protection when I was younger. This makes it very tough for me to learn songs by ear on the guitar. As you said, hearing loss is irreversible. The only help available is hearing aids, which are not all that helpful in many situations. I hope all of your younger viewers heed your sage advice!

    • @AmyMantis
      @AmyMantis 2 месяца назад

      Thanks, Fred! I'm sorry to hear (couldn't resist) about your severe hearing loss. We all lose some hearing over time, but most of it is preventable. Regrettably this aspect probably wasn't talked about enough until recently. But even now I know people who refuse to wear earplugs at concerts and I'm just like 🙃🙃🙃 I cannot stress this point enough: WEAR EARPLUGS. A young student of mine and his family mentioned they were going to see Neil Young back in May and I encouraged them to walk down to their local CVS (literally down the street from their house) to get earplugs not just for my young student, but for themselves and their older son. They listened and couldn't thank me enough the following week!

    I´m glad to be able to follow a female guitarist. In the late 60es, when I started playing guitar, the first motivation was that the boys were playing on stage, and the girls were screaming and crying in admiration. Okay, I never experienced that, but the Beatles did. Anyway: I´m 68 now, and the music itself has been the motivation for a long time. I love to see female guitarists concurring the stage that has been reserved men for so many years. Another thing that brings joy to me is, that I had to skip my music as a professional career and spend most of my working life as a tour bus driver and later truck driver, with very little time to rehearse. Being retired I have taken up my guitar playing again, including theory, and it gives me such a great otium. And there are so many learning platforms open today, that I didn't have as a young kid. Keep up the good work, Amy. 😊

    do you memorize the shapes for the intervals and the scales? I am think9ng that of you do it easy to choose any key. Or do you think of the actual note names?

      Both. I start with the shape and make sure I know the notes. Ultimately I think the notes are more important than the shapes. But the shapes help a lot and are a great shortcut at first.
