Removing the shift handle or T handle in a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ

Apologies for the shaky cell phone video. The few videos I found out there for this talked about needing to hit the bottom the shift handle really hard with a hammer to release it from the shift mechanism; even to the point where you feel your going to break it. I didn't like that approach and so searched my garage for something else that would work. All I had on hand that was really thin was a...
Modifying reverse shift-gate in 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ

I apologize for the shaky video. Post comments or questions and I'll get back to you if needed. I've had a hard time in the past when off-roading and needing to hit reverse to avoid a rollover. Instead I hit park because of a panic shift and that delay, before I found reverse, could have been catastrophic. This mod will give me a lot more confidence on the big obstacles. Caution: Before you do ...

nice video. cheers to the dude that moved the rock for ya
WOW 8 FN years and no comments OOOOOOPS
I don’t recall, but no not that many. You’ll have to research it. I loved that case for its additional strength, gearing, and the 2 Low shifter that I had in it, but that was a drawback. For crawling, it’s great. If you need a lot of wheel speed, you may want to consider something else.
Nice work
Thanks
you made it look too easy, i wonder what gear ratio you have in that zj.
Thanks @anthonydatu3523. I have 4.56 gears in the axles, and a doubler transfer case with a compounded low of 7.13:1
@@lifelongjeeper no wonder you walk that thing like it was nothing.
Yeah, gearing makes such a huge difference. Haha I’ve wanted to put 4:1 gears in my main tcase in order to have a true 4 speed of 1:1, 2.72:1, 4:1, 10.88:1 but I can’t imagine ever needing them that low. So instead I’ve kept the factory 2.62 gears in it. Being able to split the difference between the 2.62 and 7.13 with the 4:1 would be really nice sometimes though, which is ultimately why I’d ever do it; even if I never use the combined double low.
@@lifelongjeeper Currently installed in my ZJ is np242 (2.72:1) but I have a NP231 (not installed) with teralow (4:1), do you think the doubler kit will work with this combo? I just don't know how to find a shop that install a doubler kit. Sorry, I'm relatively new to the Jeep world but I try do DIY as much as I can.
Hmm, I would use the 231 teralow as your main case but I’m not sure if the doubler kits will work for a 242 or not. I know they’ll work for a 231, but I wouldn’t cut a teralow apart. There is Caution with a teralow too. You cannot over-rev them or you’ll destroy it. They have a design flaw, in my opinion, where the planet gears have brass washers on the ends and when over-reved the oil gets slung out, the brass washers get consumed and the gears get sloppy. I’ve had it happen personally, my brother twice.

what size tires bro?
They’re 37’s.
Super !!!
Thank you!
37 tieres 5.13 o 5.38 gear
I have 4.56 in the axles but a doubler transfer case with 7.13:1 compounded low. If I were to regear the axles though, I’d probably go 5.38’s for better high range performance
Salut my friend super car super video subscribe subscribe ...
Thanks Ungur. It’s fun.
What are the specs on this ZG? Which suspension?
Jeep Specs '96 ZJ Limited • Built 5.9L with EQ Heads, Headers, cold air intake, 3" exhaust • Rear D60 with 1350 driveline, 4.56's, Detroit Locker, Disc brakes with RuffStuff Eldorado calipers, Triangulated 4 link truss • Front D60, 4.56's, Spartan Locker, Yukon HD locking hubs • Custom built long arm suspension with 6" lift, stretched wheelbase front 2" forward and rear 4" back, • 37" Nitto Trail Grapplers • Warn XD9000i winch • STaK Replace-a-case Dana300/Behemoth Drivetrain Doubler • Custom fit JK fender flares
@@lifelongjeeper did you pull them axles out of a truck like an f350 or are they custom length wms to wms I can't really tell in the video give me the Krabby patty formula haha we all want it
@@dylanmccallister1888 the front is out of a ‘93 F350 and the rear, I’m not positive but think it’s a late 70’s Ford. If doing it again, I’d probably go with ‘05+ super duty axles. Not that I have any complaints about mine, there was just a lot of extra work and expense to strengthen them, but those newer SD axles are pure beef to start with.
@@lifelongjeeper thankyou you're the man the jeep is killer I have lofty goals now
@@dylanmccallister1888 they aren’t narrowed but are rather full width with spacers even. Front WMS measures 69” but because I needed to clear my high steer steering arm, I’m running 2” spacers until I can modify the steering design/build. The rear is quite narrow at 65”, so with the 2” spacers it’s pushed out the 69” which will be perfect when I narrow the front back down. Full widths fit great under these ZJs.
this the 5.2?
When this was filmed, yes it was a 5.2 but I built and swapped a 5.9 in since then.

His son never even looked up from the phone. Mine are the same way its sad.
I hear your concern, but it’s not quite what it seems. He had just gotten back in the Jeep after hiking alongside us for an hour or so. He wanted to ride up the obstacle but the sun was straight in his eyes so he was looking at some pictures/videos that he had been taking. He’s always been a very involved active participant.
@@lifelongjeeper Man that is good to hear. My 9 year old loves wheeling but if I aloud it he would rather watch RUclips or play games wich just kills me. I'm glad to hear that there is still hope lol.
@@lifelongjeeper how do you like your zj. I just put a 5.5 inch lift on mine with control arm drops, super 35 kit, locked front and rear, roll cage, adjustable uppers, and 35s. I'm trying to figure out a way to get rid of the inner fender wells because it just won't flex with the 35s
Yes, still hope indeed. It’s all a matter of consistency and boundaries. And trying to engage him in a way that he finds interest and investment. If he loves RUclips, teach him how to record good content and ask him to capture you Jeeping so you can post it.
Yes, I really like my Jeep but only complain about its size and weight. I contemplate going to a TJ, but with the major modifications done that steered me away from that platform 12 years ago or so. If not for that though, I’d stay in a ZJ forever. Mine is lifted 6” stretched to 110” on custom long arms, doubler, locked and geared 60’s, 5.9L swap, 37’s. It’s at the point though where I need to put it in for version 3.0 with a built transmission, minor additional engine mods, enlarged wheel wells, and rollcage/bumper work…, so the decision to keep it, sell it, or swap all my engine/drivetrain into a stretched TJ is looming. To clear your 35’s, adjust your control arms to center your axles in the wheel wells, and trim the body if/where it rubs. It’s really the only way clear bigger meats and not have it jacked to the sky. I trimmed a ton out and need to do more still, especially if I step up to 40’s.
Lift size ? I have a 94 zj with a 4.5 lift and 33x12.5 what's your set up ?
It’s approximately a 6” lift with a 6” stretch (2” forward and 4” back). All custom long arms and high steering. 37’s. 60’s with 4.56’s and Detroit lockers. Doubler transfer case with 7.13:1 double low range. Built and swapped 5.9 from a ‘98 ZJ.
Random curiosity. What neck of the woods (utah) are you from? Im.located in Utah. Got a 98 zj that I'm in the process of building.
Nice! I’m in SLC. How about you?
@@lifelongjeeper I'm in cedar city.
@@jakolberamirez8438 awesome. Good luck with the build and let me know if you have any questions. What are your build plans?
@@lifelongjeeper I purchased an IRO rock-link long arm kit front and rear. Just doing a HP 30 AND F8.8 for now. Got done welding up the rear axle a couple weeks ago. Just gotta do gears next and should be able to slap everything in.
@@jakolberamirez8438 sound like you’re off to a good start. What lockers and tire size are you going to run?
This long arms were killing it
Thanks. It’s amazing at how much of a difference they make.
howd you do the headers?
They’re Eddlebrock Headers and cleared everything great. They dump into a Y pipe and out 3” tubes/cat/muffler. I bought the headers used so I don’t know what model they are.
wtf
Nice grand.
Thanks. It’s a fun Jeep.
my crv could do that easy. jeeps are such fairymobiles

Thanks man! BTW, I like the name of your channel.
Traction is the king here, rest are the driver skills.
It’s true. Traction, low gears, and good spotting all played a role. It’s a fun one for sure.
Wouldn't have ever thought that this was a possible climb. Impressed didn't even squawk a tire
Thanks man. It never ceases to amaze me what these dang Jeeps can do.
I was not expecting him to keep going up that.
It’s a fun trail for sure
Wat does this video, my jeep & a pair of clean socks have in common?
Dare I ask? Haha
That just seemed like idiotic ... then he did it !
Haha. The idiocy of it remains in question whether I did it or not. Haha. It’s all good though and is part of the trail. Super fun.
Sweet
That's amazing🤘 these vehicles are climbing obstacles now that some motorcycles wouldn't be able to.
I’d love to see a motorcycle climb this one. A good trial bike rider could probably get up it.
