    i really appreciate hearing you talk about this. my lack of stereo vision definitely contributed to some of the family scapegoating i've experienced because it reinforced that i was different from everyone else. i didn't play sports and i could tell there was disappointment in my family around it. it's hard to know if my parents would have taken me to a vision therapist if they knew about it when i was younger since we didn't have google yet. very interesting to think about this from a vision therapy perspective.

    Dear Michael… can acupuncture helps to strengthen the eye muscles?

    • @strabismusworld2026
      @strabismusworld2026 Месяц назад

      I have no idea. If you have experience with it, let me know. I often heard strength is not really the issue with the extra ocular muscles, rather the integration or the grasp that the nervous system has on them. As in sports: rather a technique than a strength issue. Either way, I’d be great to get fluid and binocularly harmonious eye movements in all directions all the time.

    Hi Michael, as you mention in your video, I see the frame of my glasses on the sides when I look left or right. This forces me to look straight ahead, I turn my head too often to look to the sides and my gaze isn't fluid. Do you have any advice on how to stop seeing double on the sides with your glasses?

    • @strabismusworld2026
      @strabismusworld2026 Месяц назад

      Yes, you are a “head locker”. Instead of moving the eyes, you lock the eyes in position and move your head. That gives some comfort initially but ultimately it erodes visual flexibility and perhaps even gaze stability in primary gaze (looking straight ahead). This phenomenon is also induced even more if the prescription for either eye is very different (anisometropia). Then the different lenses induce various optical effects when looking to the side. A solution for this can be contact lenses and then training range and stability of gaze. Contact lenses also eliminate the optical distortions that glasses can bring about bc they are placed right on the eye. Lastly contact lenses enable the opening up of peripheral vision which is important when acquiring fusion and stereo vision. Personally I never found contact lenses very comfortable. I am a hyperope. It is unusual for hyperopes to wear contact lenses. I felt it made my vision less clear compared to not wearing anything at all…

      I developed accommodative strabismus at the age of 3 due to uncorrected farsightedness. My mom saw something was wrong with my attention or vision. She had me tested by ophthalmologists and neurologists but for some reason none of them thought it would be necessary to give me glasses to correct the farsightedness and take off this accommodative load. The strain eventually lead to my eye teaming giving out, strabismus, amblyopia, … Eventually I got glasses and they did some patching but did not fully treat with VT in order to restore binocular vision. Because I did not know about VT until later, I had several surgeries (age 16, 18 and 19). It’s a long way of saying that my strabismus originated because of negligence, not genetic determinism. This is even more clear if you consider my brother’s story. He is three years younger. My mom saw some of the same signs of having difficulty with paying attention etc around the same age. Having learned from my case, she had him tested for farsightedness. Bingo. Get the glasses immediately. Resolved the attention issues, no derailment of binocular vision. My wife, I found out later, also had strabismus when she was young. She was born prematurely because of stressful circumstances. She had to have surgery on the retinas and then later Strabismus surgery. That somehow helped to jump start binocular development. She now has normal stereo vision. In neither of our families there is a history of strabismus. I was not too worried about it. I feel like the strabismus was done to me rather than being genetically predisposed. I do get my kids visually examined to make sure though. Both in terms of refraction and binocular development it seems they have excellent vision. Touch wood. But if something would arise I would be aware soon and course correct asap.

      I started with a visible eye turn but now that’s pretty much gone in static situations. They might still misalign when in motion and when I am moving. That’s the challenge now. I think if that can be addressed more, I’d see the perceptual things falling into place as well

    Hi there :) Thanks very much for this video ! I have strabismus as well ( intermittent distance exotropia) and my story is very very similar . I also struggle to read , have a tiny bit of motion sickness and absolutely struggle with stereo vision . My anxiety levels got to a point that my body started started creating non cancerous cysts and I had to risk my life 2 times to remove them because they would cause me blood cloths . Also , I just recently fell and broke my leg because of my stereo vision

    I have amblyopia.. my right eye. I always have bruises from walking/ running into things. Everyone knows me as being clumsy. It also takes me 10 times as long to find something I’m looking for also. Reading frustrates me. What’s strange, is that my right ambyopic eye is my favored eye, I use it for photography or through a telescope. I was so frustrated and borderline depressed that all my manual photography looked clear through the viewfinder but on the computer they were all blurry! I couldn’t fix this with what I was doing, couldn’t use autofocus for what I was doing. Then finally years later there’s “live view” so I bought a camera with this. Now my pictures are clear and crisp because it’s a 4” touch screen , I am happy now.
