A lot of the videos on here were from my sister and I's deleted channel called You Can't Unwatch It. A lot of the old videos will be back up but I will also be making new content ranging from anime, to sci-fi or horror or just whatever I want. Stay tuned.
Blue Submarine No. 6: A Messy Early Work From Gonzo
If you were in Middle School growing up, you likely would have seen this play on Toonami back around Fall 2000. It may have been cool to see then along with shows like Gundam and Outlaw Star. But Looking at this as an adult the results are interesting and not always in a flattering way.

Spriggan 1998 vs. 2022: A Somewhat Annoying Compare and Contrast

This is one I have been wanting to do for a while. I have always liked the movie. For all its faults, it is a great action flick that I can turn my brain off for and enjoy. I cannot say the same for the Netflix version. This video is primarily looking at the adaptations of the Noah's Ark chapter. So how does each hold up? Tune in and find out. Gunhed (1989): Better Than Expected
It will always be wilt to me that Heath based his Joker's voice so heavily on Tom Waits and then ended up working with the man himself on his very next movie.
Damn, we meet again DR! I love this movie too! XD We should have a movie night. Sky Crawlers was a great movie. My wife and I watched it the first time together. Contemplative, that is a VERY good way to describe this movie. I had no idea about the game or anything beyond this movie.
Glad you enjoyed it. This is one of my newer videos and I honestly think it to be among my best. A lot of the stuff on here is from my Sister and I's old channel that got removed for reasons that still baffle us to this day.
@DecultureReviews Well good Job, Keep it up! I'm going to be watching most, if not all, of your reviews at this rate ^_^
I just watched this show a couple days ago, and this is exactly the kind of video I'm looking for! I personally really like a series that doesnt try to explain itself. Sometimes it's more interesting to speculate than it is to be told what's happening outright. This show leans a little too far in that direction, but there are shows that do it well-Haibane Renmei, Serial Experiments Lain, Last Exile, to name a few. My gut reaction to the CG was that it was bad, but I have an easy time settling in to an animation style. It's hard for me to judge, with the show being almost as old as I am-they couldn't have known how incredibly dated it would look decades after release. Besides, I love the cel animation and Range Murata's character designs, so the show looks good enough even with the dated CG I watched the dub, and I found the audio mixing made it really hard to understand what people were saying sometimes. Most of the English actors are somewhere between "okay" and "decent," but I _loved_ Zorndyke's english voice. I can't believe he only acted in three shows.
I also don't mind when shows don't explain everything. I agree Last Exile did that a bit better and you are correct that Zorndyke's English voice was quite good. Too bad the rest of the dub just didn't work for me. Which is why I used the subtitled version. I do use dubs when they are good and I will certainly use that when I do Last Exile.
Damn I love this anime, it has its falts, sure. But i have to say the animation is good and the CGI is not as jarring as Appleseed. The 2D though, gorgeous. Last Exile? 😊
Me too! I love the art designs for the world, subs, and characters! And my lord Mutio is so cute, I am so upset there are so few fan arts of her.
@@maddrago9422 Indeed, So much potential in just 4hrs. Your not wrong, I dont think I ever found more then a poster for the show as a whole.
It's cool if you love it. I didn't think it was awful but it could have been better too. I intend to cover Last Exile. In the coming months I hope. That one is pretty underrated.
@@DecultureReviews The plot has holes and indeed felt rushed, but, there were deeper contemplations that resonated with me. I would love a full novel or anime, but I am content with what we got. Not everything needs to be explained, and those mysteries, in addition to the art work, is what I really enjoyed. The music and action with those quiet moments. I guess there is just more then a few aspects I like ^_^
@@DecultureReviews yes please do LE!! Wake Up Sleepy Head!!!
I dunno man, seem really cool
Yeah, it's visually beautiful and stunning. An cool anime, but it does feel like the writing was rushed. Not enough development for characters or plot with only four parts, should've been an 6 to 12 part anime series.
@@maddrago9422 fair, havent seen it myself but ill give it a go, probs end up with similar thoughts at the end of it tbh
@@shawnmm1 I so recommend it, it is short but if your looking for an unique anime: Blue Sub 6 is for you!
@@maddrago9422 yuh, yeah looked really sick and stylish, thx 4 the rec m8
One, of my favorite anime!
Definitely an beautiful anime to watch, and I was hooked by the chimera/sea monster folk designs. Mutio is my favorite of course she's the cutest mermaid girl ever! But as you said the plot just feels rushed and left us hanging. I wanted to know so much more, like how is human society like after the floods? Did Zorndyke just made the chimera just as his new family, and it was the humans that started the fighting? And did Mutio love Hayami, seriously the last episode ending where she comfort Verg sickens me who writes this?! I really like this anime and just wish we had any hope of a reboot or some kind of fan project series I don't know. But you did a great review for this anime, thank you.
I'd love for a prequel to it as well as a remake
@michaelniemela6566 me too mate, me too.
Better than Gundam
I do kind of agree. Although I do love UC Gundam and some of the earlier spin-off shows.
Ironically, as of today, this is now officially available in the U. S on Hulu!
I know. This was made during a time when Nozomi Entertainment was supposed to handle distribution and I believe before the decision to put it on Hulu.
@@DecultureReviews Oh, I know. I was just adding it for any future person. that shows up.
This was made for Halloween 2021. Looking back on this one I was WAY too hard on this. Yes I still think the story is pretty stupid and illogical (hence the title of the video) but really the story isn't why people watch it and that certainly isn't why I actually found myself liking it more when I revisiting it recently. Its many problems aside this is a unique albeit twisted film that any anime fan should see once. Plus even if I bashed it I am still covering a Yoshiaki Kawajiri film so that a win in my book. This is certainly a case where I would look at this differently where I to tackle it today.
5:11 How could they get close in one day if they didn't have to work together fighting those creatures.
I'm trying to watch this video but with that whole "trying not to get blocked" nonsense that he keeps flashing on the screen it's really jarring and I'm sorry I can't watch it
Funny thing is I really only had to do that with the Illang footage. It kept getting blocked worldwide so I finally had to do it just to clips with audio. It's weird how RUclips works.
11:07 Wrong. Connor didn't know Heather was raped by the Kurgan. Heather kept that from him. Connor lost his shit the moment he heard it from the Kurgan. So much that he even wanted to fight the Kurgan inside the church, a holy ground. Imagine that. Heather died of old age and Connor never married again after Heather and that's why it's parallel to Colin's single-mindedness about Moya. So, how can you expect Colin to enjoy life like Connor after experiencing Moya's horrific death? The Search for Vengeance is a great Highlander movie, definitely up there with the first live-action film. It's certainly not a disappointment. It's just slightly below Yoshiaki Kawajiri/Yutaka Minowa other masterpieces, namely Ninja Scroll and Bloodlust. The Search for Vengeance also did better with respecting the mythos than The Source and it came out months earlier too. The anime explored more time in history, had better characters, their world is more established, had better fight scenes and the finale is better.
To each his own. Search for Vengeance certainly is better than The Source but I just don't think it ranks among Kawajiri's best. Even without it being part of the Highlander series, the story just felt like a bunch of "been there done that." Not particularly inspired. But yeah you are right about that detail with the Kurgan in the first Highlander. I misremembered that part.
@@DecultureReviews Kawajiri didn't write it. He only directed it. Abramovitz, the producer of the tv show wrote it and he did a better work than majority of Highlander films.
Labyrinth of Time also solidifies that Macross Frontier series and movies are separate timelines. The Vajra likely travelled between the two as mentioned in Delta. I agree this sets up for more story but I also doubt it will specifically be Frontier. A good few Macross series ends with at least the couple going missing. Often rejected character gets more noticed and featured in later Macross. So I suspect movie Ranka will appear again in another Macross. Not sure we will get anything specifically for Frontier series version.
love this film remember buying it in rival records upstairs they had a small anime manga shelve and this caught my eye
The movies are my preferred experience for the new ending alone. I got the sentiment behind the TV ending, both Sheryl and Ranka are important to Alto in their own ways, but it made the constant romantic buildup feel a waste of time. The series always felt like it was written for Sheryl to win, but they got cold feet at the last moment and cobbled up a justification for Alto not picking one of them. I also really liked how it mirrored Zero's ending, I love me some big circle moments.
Totally disagree. I enjoyed the series. Wish it was around two or three.
I call these the Goodbye Kiss. In romance stories not uncommon for a character who knows their love interest loves someone else but will still choose to kiss them before a big moment. A way of a confession but also a means of letting go at the same time. This is why afterwards Sheryl talks about how she only has her music. However my first watch I found it confusing as well. The series by itself Alto is very unclear who he loves. Movie alternate events gives a really good point of reference. A lot of changes to the story. Specially in second part. But the one significant change that gives it away is Alto's piloting skills and who is singing. No other Macross I know of changes the idol's powers this much. When you add in the comparison how the characters first meet on screen. In particular Sheryl's first concert... Makes a lot of sense why the movies are an alternate story.
Honeslty, i get what you mean about the sound force Valkyries looking like something from power rangers. I think thats why bandai tried to minimize the mouth of the fire valkyrie in their relase of the 1:65 toy of it
Your video sucks
Finally got around to watching your Frontier video (I like to watch yours after I make mine to avoid subconsciously parroting what you say) . Frontier is really a hard series to hate, it feels they took all the best aspects from prior works and threw them all into a blender. The only thing that really bugged me was the lack of a proper conclusion to the love triangle, but thankfully the movies rectified that. Good video overall, I like how you actually show clips from the series. I can't be bothered dealing with the copyright nightmare that requires.
Thanks. At first it wasn't that bad. The copyright crap really started a few months after posting the videos. Then I had to go back and do massive re-edits which sometimes took 10-15 tries to get them to pass. That was a nightmare. Wings of Goodbye and Macross Plus were the worst of them all to re-post. Thankfully I have the extended, uncut versions on Vimeo with the original intros intact.
I honestly think the black stealth jet is my favorite design in macros 7. Mainly because it has a fighter mode that isn’t ANOTHER reverse-winged fighter jet like so many from plus and even the more recent designs.
I loved this film & think its underrated.
Macross 7 was such a joke.
I love the detail that during the first meeting of Doctor Parnassus and Mr. Nick, they're playing the Royal Game of Ur - (at least one of) the oldest board game(s) known to men. Which also suggests that the temple is located in ancient Mesopotamia.
from our point of view, it's not the space that is folded. but rather the spacecraft was stretched very looong into infinity
OMFG.... Let's say you could fold space into half to space travel. ALL OTHER entities in that "space" would have been folded! Now, instead of have 2 holes. The 2 halves of the space will be in contact with each other. Now imagine, every time this technology is used. Spaces FOLDS in half...
Folding space doesn’t seem safe to try ……..
So a wrinkle in time
Macross ftw!! Classic!! Love Robotech too. Grew up with this.
Great work man. It's been a while since I saw a video about Macross.
I'm just happy somebody finally has acknowledged this anime. I thought it was a great Robotech spin-off/ reiteration
Robotech was actually an adaptation of Macross as well as Mospeada and Southern Cross into one show. The Macross franchise came first and has nothing do to with Robotech apart from the original series being used.
Harmony Gold are the owners of the Robotech IP/English Dub licence holder. Robotech is an English Dub "adaptation" (They altered much of the story and changed the names of things to maintain a monopoly of the English Dub licenced IP as their own creative works) of the original Japanese Anime Macross. As Harmony Gold hold so much of the IP through such an underhanded tactic, US copyright & IP laws is effectively international copyright & IP law (Which sucks for the rest of us BTW), the original Japanese IP of Macross cannot technically be dubbed & distributed in most English speaking nations. Don't get me wrong, for what it's worth, Robotech is a great series. However, Macross is the original source of the Robotech: Macross Saga's animation and not the other way around. Macross is a brilliant show that has much more to it than the cobbled together mess Harmony Gold made from Macross and other sci-fi anime series (Southern Cross & Mospedia saga's respectively). They did a decent job making a coherent three saga Series of the anime they licensed, but Robotech is just that; Repurposed animation from a few different anime tied together under the Robotech banner. The English Sub of the original Macross series is available & I highly recommend it. It will be different in many ways that might surprise you as a Robotech fan. Speaking from personal experience, I adored Robotech growing up. But I learned about its origin as Macross and have thoroughly enjoyed the original for all the differences & how much more to the series there is. Macross Plus, for example, is not a Robotech anime. Its story is set in the original Macross IP's universe.
Shame. They are refusing to understand just one aspect of their theory. Space itself. It isn’t empty. Figure it out!
Wait till you figure out that the Zentradi are from a different future actually “Micronians” from another past. This is why the Zentradi were warned to stay away from the race = they didn’t listen to Exsedol
Incorrect, folding space would happen in intervals as space that can be traveled in is effected by gravity, gravity travels in waves. To fold space is to travel from fold to fold, like skipping a rock across a lake while being buffeted by hurricane force wind.
Looking back on it, I should have been more clear in the actual video that at first I thought it worked in a similar fashion like Dune or Event Horizon but would later see that wasn't the case. I cut a clip from this short where the narrator explains fold faults which helps show that it really doesn't work the same way as Event Horizon for the sake of time. When I first saw Macross I felt I was on the right track when it came to talking about Space Fold as a lot of science fiction borrow ideas from one another whether based on real life concepts or not.
@DecultureReviews The first mistake is always believing time exists when we have no proof of it. We can identify entropy, we can track it, and this leads science to believe in time. Time cannot exist because zero doesn't exist outside a textbook.
NASA already developed a prototype engine about five years ago. It folds a small degree of space behind the vessel, which helps project it forward
That's why in Macross the ships when "jumping" turn into a lightstream that can be seen traveling the distance. We also know they use a gravity bubble as other ships can be carried alongside the jumping ship.
"possibly another Macross frontier movie" I wish but doubt it, BW/Studio Nue went all in on pushing idol concert sales. As it was pulling in far more than the model kits due to being regionlocked because of copyright (Harmony gold patent trolling)
The 1998 movie isn’t perfect, but I’ll take it over the awful Netflix series any day of the week.
Better than blue lock
Fr. Blue lock feels like I'm watching PowerPoint slides.
This one was a chore to get put up. It took me 14 tries to get this one to pass because Bandai kept blocking it worldwide and yet none of the Netflix series footage ever got claimed. That's funny. So apologies for the watermark over some of the footage from the movie. I had no choice. Only way to get it to pass.
its all good. i saw the movie growing up and it is an excellent 80s style action flick. saw the trailer for the netflix one and the m inute i saw cgi i was "meh". pretty much the exact way i reacted to seeing the netflix trailer for another childhood classic "trigun" cgi is fine if used well, but when there is an existing property and the cgi is just redoing the movie, there is literally no point. might as well not do the ark chapter and just do another chapter, so at least the movie watcher might check it out to find out more about the franchise
Macross Do You Remember love animation is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen, it's dirty look and roughness gives me the realism vibe and the harshness of space, truly a masterclass anime, not to mention the soundtrack is amazing.
That’s Luca’s sister…💀💀
in Manga the operating system was Japanese dos system call DOSV.
Macross Delta, man i hate everthing about Macross Delta that series and the movie killed the entire franchise for me. BTW the Ovas of Macross Plus where top tier and Macross Zero is still awesome IMO
Plus and Zero are quite good. I have some small issues with Plus but the love it gets is well deserved. I also really love Macross Frontier. As for Delta, the series had a promising first half then it declined quite badly in the second half. A shame really. Although I personally thought Zettai Live was quite good despite its faults and is what the Delta TV series should have been.
"When I was a young boy I found a lone wolf cub lost in the forest. Dad told me to get rid of it, but I believed that if I could instill discipline, order, and control I could harness the raw power of such a beast. I fed it, let it play with my other dog, and raised it until one day when out in the forest the adolescent wolf turned on me. Snarling and foaming at the mouth." A similar story that tells how you can't tame a wolf completely with anything like "the power of love" and Jin-Roh tells it far more clearly than the remake.
That movie was great! I want a new Macross project!
If I recall correctly, a new series is in development at Sunrise. That should be interesting...
Hi, good to see you again I was wondering what happened to your old channel then I saw your FB post, sorry to hear YT is such a .... good luck will be watching when I can.
Thanks. I will continue to make more content but it won't be very frequent as I have to work. Stay tuned.
Just finished all three parts. Great work! I've been a Minmay defender for about 30 years. One of the aspects of RT that still rankles me to this day is how they seemingly went out of their way to make Minmay as unlikable, stupid, selfish, and unsympathetic as possible. I always figured she was genuine, but sadly, stuff like the RT novelizations made it a point to portray her as manipulative. We as viewers are supposed to embrace Hikaru x Misa as the series progressed, but the original series did well enough, I think, to show Minmay's feelings in the last nine episodes were authentic. She was just finally emboldened to make decisions on her own. Also, after episode 4, most of Hikaru and Minmay's interactions are implied or off-screen. They hung out regularly until she became Miss Macross, and I imagine they bonded like normal kids do, but we don't get to see that the way we saw Hikaru and Misa do so. Recently, a fan pointed out to me that Kawamori supposedly was influenced by Japanese culture of the 1970s and 1980s in which it was somewhat expected that people from different worlds don't end up together. Also supposedly, if Kawamori could do things differently, he would've portrayed their relationships different. Anyway, that's what the fan told me, and I can't verify it. I'd also add that Quamzin (or however you choose to spell that) decided to fight with Vrlitwhai and Laplamiz because he decided he enjoyed culture and he'd never be accepted back to the Bodol fleet. And since he was already unbothered by attacking other Zentradi, there was no moral quandary. He and Laplamiz were the two Zentradi who embraced culture, but really relished in the dark aspects. Finally, Macek. I vaguely recall reading an article where he kind of put down the source material just to brag about his work on RT. I had periods of sympathy for the guy, but I pretty much lost any remaining good will after reading his boasts.
Thanks. It is possible that I was a touch too kind to Macek. I haven't read all his talks about Robotech when I made these videos as I didn't know where to find them and what I did find I couldn't completely verify if they were real so I didn't use them. But I will never like Harmony Gold as a company. In fact, it is more accurate to say I despise it. Keeping SDF Macross and DYRL from being distributed world wide to keep their hand on their go nowhere do nothing Robotech series is just low.
Loving this series. Probably will finish it after multiple sittings. Anyway, one comment as I'm about 40% through: recap episodes are budget-saving episodes disguised as a way to get viewers back up to speed with the show. I don't love them either, but a budget-strapped show like Macross badly needed to save money every way they could.
Was it bad luck or poor planning?
Probably a bit of both looking back on all of it.
