What EV Truck Technology Will Look Like in 2027
Visit us for lists of gear at eastcoastoffroading.com
The RV industry has made incredible strides in recent years with off-grid capabilities, solar integration, and lithium battery technology, but one critical gap remains-powering the tow vehicle itself. As electric trucks gain popularity, their biggest limitation when towing a travel trailer is drastically reduced range. The industry should address this issue by developing a dedicated RV battery pack designed to extend the range of an EV truck while towing.
This concept would involve a high-capacity battery pack integrated into the travel trailer that connects to the EV truck, supplementing its power and reducing range anxiety. Given the a...

    Enjoyed the video. Thanks. Funny you mentioned the boat to jeep survey results. I was experimenting with the boating life by joining a sailing club (they also had members with power boats). In the end, I realized it wasn't for me for a variety of reasons and that I really enjoyed the overlanding I had been doing the back in 2023. So last year I bought a 2024 Wrangler Rubicon X and love it. I'm keeping the engine and drivetrain totally stock but am modifying it for comfort, off-road safety and extended travel. I took a 5-week trip this past summer and it was great. I've already got several trips planned for this year. And 4WD is not supposed to be used on dry paved roads for any vehicle regardless if solid axle or IFS.

    A Jeep is every bit as reliable as a Toyota, until you drive it off the lot. Thousands and thousands of Toyotas on the road with well over 200,000 miles on them, Jeeps live in the shop or in the junk yard by then.

    I own a 2021 Gladiator Sport S that I bought brand new a little over 3 years ago. Just hit 31K miles on it, haven't made any modifications to it other than replacing the stock tires to stock sized KO2s a couple months ago. I have had zero issues with the vehicle. I periodically take it on trails in the Black Hills where I live, and bounced it around a bit, but it's primarily driven on streets. I use four wheel drive frequently when roads are icy or snow covered. I'm starting wonder if 30K miles and 3 years isn't enough time to let the other shoe drop, or if most RUclipsrs are correct stating that you're asking for the problems when you mod. Prior to the Gladiator's release I was set on a Tacoma for may next truck, and it's probably the responsible pick for a few reasons. That being said the Gladiator stole the show for me the day I saw it once I saw it on the road. I don't intend to rock crawl or do anything that would risk totaling a $40K+ daily driver no matter what the brand do enjoy bouncing around a bit now and again on trails.

    I've been wondering when someone would do this, makes sense for EV towing. The future is large pull through charging stations where you can charge your truck and camper at the same time.

    • @EastCoastOffRoading
      @EastCoastOffRoading 11 дней назад

      @drosendahl came up with a great idea. why create an EV RV and why have an EV RV that has extra drivetrain. Why not just create a battery pack that you can add to your current RV and then charge your EV truck with the extra battery pack. This will be a lot cheaper and it will do the same thing. With EV's having 600+HP we don't need the extra drive motors.

    Some camp grounds ban EV charging. I think it's absolutely stupid, considering a Model Y only has 70KWh battery so we are talking about $7 of power, possibly lower if you get commercial rates. Even the F150 Lightning and Cybertruck only have about 120Kwh packs, and a ton of parks charge $20/day or more. If you are there 3 days, you only need to charge up 1 time. They don't just magically use more power than other vehicles when not in use.

    • @EastCoastOffRoading
      @EastCoastOffRoading 12 дней назад

      I'm actually going to take the parks side on this one. These parks are generally empty during the week and then for 3 days a week they get packed. But the parks still have to pay at least one person sometimes 2 or 3 people a full time pay and still maintain the parks and pay the electric and clean the toilets and the campgrounds. A lot of these parks are barely staying alive and then EVs get a free charge that the other campers will have to eat the costs. A good fix would be have an EV recharge addon. This way the other campers don't have to pay for the EV recharge of another camper.

    • @JonVB-t8l
      @JonVB-t8l 12 дней назад

      @@EastCoastOffRoading I'd be fine with having an up-charge. Honestly I'd be fine with paying 150% whatever the energy rate to have on-location charging. I just don't think it's ok to tell people looking to enjoy nature to piss-off, because they will be using 6-$12 of electricity. Thats just not a good way to do that... also not a good way to stay in business. EVs are becoming more common as prices come down and range goes up.

    • @1diggers1
      @1diggers1 12 дней назад

      I'm sure that will eventually change in the not too distant future. It will turn out to be a positive for the campground by creating another revenue source.

  • @drosendahl

    An EV Trailer should have a large battery than can both be used for camping and to extend the range of your EV car. But them having their own drive train is just stupid with EV cars having so much power and at the same time being heavy making them very suitable for towing (except for range but there the battery in the trailer comes in).

    • @EastCoastOffRoading
      @EastCoastOffRoading 13 дней назад

      That is a very good point. Why add extra weight to your travel trailer when you can just use a travel trailer battery to extend your ev trucks range. Maybe someone will build something like as an option for a standard RV trailer. Then you wouldn't need to buy an expensive travel trailer. Just an expensive battery.

    • @drosendahl
      @drosendahl 13 дней назад

      @@EastCoastOffRoading However, while I think this is the best idea, the EV manufacturer needs to come up with a standard for connecting an external battery. First they need to be able to drive from an externa battery and second you should only need to connect the charger to the EV and both the EV and the trailer should be charged.

    • @1diggers1
      @1diggers1 12 дней назад

    • @EastCoastOffRoading
      @EastCoastOffRoading 20 дней назад

      I can't say for sure, but if they are using lifepo4 batteries then they will need a battery heater as a backup for low temperatures (normal use of the truck would use the engine heat to keep the batteries warm). But because of the emergency battery heaters, I would estimate that the battery cannot be allowed below 10%. That would only be about 14 miles of range so if you went 676 miles and run out of gas, then I would say it's on the driver. Is that the answer you're looking for?

  • @richardowens9061
    @richardowens9061 Месяц назад

My truck has a trailer attached for the vast majority of the miles it travels and the rest of the trips are around town. I am really looking forward to how the regenerative breaking and electric torque will perform with a trailer in the mountains.

      yeah, I'm looking forward to the one foot peddle control. A lot of people don't know that when you're in the hills and mountain areas and have a trailer that we can't use our cruise control with a gas engine. But I bet with an electric motor we could actually use the cruise control, because we wouldn't have to worry about the engine shifting into a SUPER HIGH RPM RANGE. NO MORE SHIFTING!

    With the recent/sudden resignation of their CEO, do we even know if the RamCharger will still be built? This truck was announced in October/November of 2023.

    • @EastCoastOffRoading
      @EastCoastOffRoading Месяц назад

      Yes, it's still on schedule and they have set a launch date (period). It will launch some time between March and May of 2025. I'm excited about the capability to actually haul a trailer/RV without range anxiety. And to have one peddle foot control while pulling an RV. There is a lot of good features that only an electric truck can do with a trailer behind a truck. You don't need engine brakes on downhill because of regenerative braking. And because there is a real engine, the truck can use the engine heat to keep the batteries warm during the winter. Plus, you won't get the typical hybrid water humidity in the crank case, because this engine will run the gas engine long enough to warm it up, which eliminates the hybrid condensation problem.

    Nice review on the Ramcharger. I share your excitement. I have a Hemi 5.7L Wagoneer with 58K miles on it and it's been solidly reliable. I have been very disappointed in Ram for moving to dual turbocharged engines. All these turbocharged engines on large engines run very hot and will be proven to be wildly unreliable in my opinion. I was also skeptical of electrified platforms until we recently bought a 2025 Hybrid Accord. All I can say is wow! The integration of a battery with the naturally aspirated 2 Liter engine is flawless - we can't even tell when the engine is on and when it turns off - it's brilliant. I understand that the Hybrid Accord is a different style drive train then the Ramcharger since in the case of the accord, the ice drives the transmission too. However, it shows that electrification can be done elegantly and the efficiency is fantastic - the Hybrid Accord is rated for 46mpg! That's amazing - we are expecting to lower our gasoline costs by 50%.

      My main concern about the Ramcharger is will the generator be able to supply enough charge to the batteries when the batteries are under a heavy load from towing. Any engineers out there that can give their view on this question?

    • @EastCoastOffRoading
      @EastCoastOffRoading Месяц назад

      Just remember that most hybrids need more frequent oil changes because of the water condensations in the crank case. But the new Ramcharger will not have the condensation problem, because the generator will run long enough to eliminate any chance of condensation.

    I like the idea, it means you don't have range anxiety. But, the proof is in the driving. Let's see what it actually does. I think the v6 might be an Atkinson cycle, so it will be more efficient than a regular v6. It definitely has potential, but time will tell. We've seen so much smoke and mirrors from car makers, let's see what they really do. Towing and winter performance. Have to see it to believe it.

    • @EastCoastOffRoading
      @EastCoastOffRoading Месяц назад

      When you don't add the initial electric range you get a little over 20mpg with just gas. The engine is a 6 cylinder that is designed to run a lower rpms to help produce a more efficient charge rate. What I love about this truck is that for your daily driving, you can use the plugin and get a cheaper cost. And then when you need to make your long trip, you don't get range anxiety. Plus, you can use the truck as a generator and run an RV for a month. Probably more like a week if you're using an air conditioner.
