Pottery from May 2018 Firing. Ron Philbeck Pottery
Просмотров 7966 лет назад
Pots unloaded from my soda kiln. A good firing all around. The kiln was stacked with more open space between the pots this time and I think that led to more soda glaze dispersal around the pots. Some have more build up of soda glaze all around the pot which is a little different than other firings in the past. The pots with the cobalt slips really benefitted from the open space and extra soda. ...

Mackenzie Drop Rim Bowl. Cutting the foot.
Просмотров 3716 лет назад
This is a follow up to the last video I shot where I made a drop rim bowl in the style of Warren Mackenzie. Here I cut the foot on the bowl and also show it along side another one that has a slightly taller foot. Thanks for watching.
Warren Mackenzie style drop rim bowl
Просмотров 8936 лет назад
This form is one of my favorite pots that Warren Mackenzie makes. I sure wish I owned on of his. Here I am making a drop rim bowl on my treadle wheel. I had a little trouble keeping the clay wet when pulling up the walls but I finally got things to work for me. There are several videos of Warren himself making this pot here on RUclips. Just search 'Mackenzie drop rim' and you'll find them. Than...

Glazing Pottery Mugs
Просмотров 7877 лет назад
In this video I am putting a liner glaze in some handthrown mugs. These mugs will be fired in my soda kiln so the outsides do not get a coating of glaze. Instead they have been been slipped before bisque firing. The sodium vapor will react with the slip to give it color and sheen. The ladle I use to pour in the glaze is a favorite tool. I purchased it online through Bailey Ceramics. Thanks for ...

Cutting a Foot on a Luncheon Plate

This shows the cutting of the foot on the luncheon plate that I threw in a previous video ruclips.net/video/H_RNu9 yRI/видео.html I like to have a predominate foot on my pots. Throwing a Luncheon Plate
Просмотров 5257 лет назад
A short video of me throwing a luncheon plate on my treadle wheel. This plate is made from 4 lbs of clay and thrown to 9 1/2" diameter wet. I use soft clay which makes the throwing effortless. I use plenty of clay so I can cut a nice foot later on and so the pot will have some good thickness to be durable for everyday use. I like plate with bit of a curve. Since I fire to high temp in my soda k...
Pulling a Handle on a Pottery Mug
Просмотров 5 тыс.7 лет назад
This is how I pull handles on all my mugs. There are of course many, many ways to get a handle on a mug so find what works best for you and your pots. It takes a lot of practice to make good handles. I'd say as much or more practice than it does to throw the mug. So don't put it off. Get to making some handles. I hope this helps in some way. Good luck and happy potting. ronphilbeckpottery.com/ ...

Thank you for sharing
I think these are the best looking handles I've seen!
what is the slip you use to get the red/orange, almost looks like a shino? Like your pottery, back to the roots of this style, 6,000 years. Do you ever salt instead of soda?
Hi, That slip is called Bauer's Orange Flashing Slip. It has been around a while and a Google search should turn up the recipe. I did salt glaze for about 12 years. I am planning on returning to salt in the future.
Shamoaka was the master of Jōmon zogan style of pottery. I think he was better than his master Hamada. You should use the mishima technique on your Joman pieces like Shamoaka did.
Yes, Tatsuzo Shimaoka was certainly the master.
@@ronphilbeck ❤
Nice plates!
Stunning work, so glad I found your work, inspiring, to say the least.
I'm new to wadding. I do not soda fire, but I am afraid of pot distorsion, that may stop the lid from coming off after the firing. Brushed alumina or wadding? That is the question. Greetings from Italy!
What are you making these days Ron?
Super Dooper Beautiful!
Great result! Stunning orange colors!
Really pretty pots
Please post more videos :)
Beautiful work!
What size is your kiln?
Double boxing & foam nuts no breakage ever.
Love your work and thank your for being so generous with your knowledge Ron!
Glad it was helpful. :)
WOW!!! Beautiful!!!
beautiful forms, beautiful brush strokes, beautiful pots. thanks for the inspiration!
What happens to under glaze in a soda firing? Do you always use slips to color your work?
Hi Denise, You'll have to test each underglaze to see if it will work in soda. Some lose their color or just look terrible. I have good success with Amaco Jet Black underglaze at cone 10 in my soda kiln. I use flashing slips on all the exteriors. These respond to the soda and the atmosphere to create color. You can Google "soda glaze flashing slips" or "salt glaze flashing slips" to get some recipes. I apply these at the leather hard stage. Some are made to go on bisque as well. Good luck
@@ronphilbeck Your work is so beautiful. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I've used flashing slips in the wood fire but never have seen the wonderful details your work has. I appreciate you.
What kind of wax do you use? Very useful. Video. Thank you!
This is paraffin wax melted in an electric pan. You could also use a cold wax sold by a pottery supply.
Nice to see such creative work. Thank you.
That little jug with the red "C" on it, it looks on purpose! As it's my initial, if I saw it on sale I would buy it thinking that the kiln made it for me 😊
Love these! Even 8 years on they are very very cool! I adore the tiles!!!
*je m'amuse aussi :-) **ruclips.net/video/0anEVofWbro/видео.html*
Oh yes! The woodblock print effect with the dark slip, the toasty surfaces like marshmallows! And the buttery orange small flasks which shift to blue greys.
Thanks dr
Love these and am looking to make more substantial feet on wooden bowls. Any idea of the history of this style or where else it might exist?
Hi Al. You could check out some historical Silla pottery from Korea. Also if you do a Google search for "ruggles and rankin pottery bowl" you may find some images that are helpful. They were very influenced by Korean and Japanese pots from the past. Many Greek pots also have a substantial foot. And Italian as well. Hope that helps. Cheers.
@@ronphilbeck Thanks, Ron. The Greek and Italian searches were fascinating but none of the simplistic, elegantly curved bowl on a tall foot. In fact, it doesn't seem to appear anywhere much at all. Ruggles and Rankin had some nice designs such as www.rosenfieldcollection.com/b96/ but, again, not quite like these in your video. Although not curved bowl walls, your soda fired serving bowl with a tall foot (on Etsy) is the closest I've seen. A beautiful piece. Great work, mate. Inspired by you, I've turned a wood bowl using the golden ratio. With the foot height being the shorter segment and the bowl height being the longer, the whole piece harmonises very well. I've also used the same proportion for the foot and bowl width. Cheers, Al
You are way too, brave to put all that in one box!
I agree with the other comments, gorgeous! ♥️♥️♥️
Beautiful. Good work!
Why did you replace them?
jackie aguirre Not working.
ronphilbeckpottery not heating or not turning on
jackie aguirre not turning on, therefore not heating.
I’ve been wanting to put a pedestal type foot on a bowl for some time. Thanks for the tutorial.
Sweet! I'm in the process of hand carving some from a bag of clay. Did you figure out your favorite? I think I made my walls to steep... At least comparing to Cardew, Fitch, and Bowen's drape dishes. 🤷🏻♂️
Hey, gosh I had forgotten about this video. Ha. I don't think I ever used either of these. Wasn't the shape I wanted. I'd like to revisit this idea sometime. Definitely think the folks you mentioned above are the shapes to shoot for. Good luck.
These are beautiful. I love the flashing slips and really like the rabbit over Tokyo. Are you still doing those?
Michael Kline Thanks. Haven’t done any like that lately.
That multi-colored pot in the front at the start of this!! Oh, my!!! Gorgeous!!!!
I love the orange with black and lots of soda on them!!! Glorious!!! I think I'm going to start soda firing!! I adore the look!
Those luncheon plates!!! I want to learn to soda fire!!
Where they both leather hard
The cup body is leather hard. The handle clay is fresh out of the bag.
Beautiful patterns appear
love your wax resist animals thanks for posting
great work brother! you inspire me to get my butt in gear ad start to make some videos! and POTS of course!! hahaha! cheers! drew~
No sign of rust at the cut end of the tape measure? I'd hate for rust to transfer to my other cutting tools.
Thanks for the demo, Ron! The original bowl form is much higher than I would have expected.
fantastic pots!!!
what service are u using for shipping this ? and how much is the shipping cost rate ?
Ron how tall is that mug? Good looking handle.
Gene Arnold I throw these to 13 cm. About 5 inches. Thanks for watching.
nice !
hey ,could you share how you made soda glaze?really want to creat some beauties !thanks
