Changing the chuck jaws
Просмотров 48521 день назад
To get the best out of your chuck it is important to fit the jaws correctly, this video goes through the steps using a Teknatool SuperNova2 chuck. The markings on jaws may vary over brands and versions of chuck, but the basic process remains the same.
Fitting a face plate to your work
Просмотров 89028 дней назад
This video explains some improvements that can be made to the standard faceplate that came with your lathe to help with mounting the wood as stable as possible. Addendum: For very hard woods such as Australian Burls it is recommended to pre-drill the holes in the timber before driving the screws. The tek screws being used are designed for wood, not the tek screws that are used for roofing.
Aligning the wood lathe headstock

Lathes with swivel heads need to be aligned when returning to the centre position. Here we use the Nova Acruline to realign the head. PDF of aligning the lathe sawg.org.nz/sawg/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Aligning-the-Head.pdf Other Tips and Jigs in PDF form sawg.org.nz/tipsnjigs/
Fitting a chuck on the wood lathe

Mounting the chuck on the lathe appears to be a straight forward task. The number of times we see or hear about chucks that are jammed onto a lathe resulting in facebook posts asking how to remove them has lead to this video being made.

    How do you adjust if it doesn't align?

    • @SouthAucklandWoodturnersGuild
      @SouthAucklandWoodturnersGuild Месяц назад

      All lathes are different. The Nova Neptune Lathe as shown in this video, page 20 of the manual (available for download from teknatool.com) explains the process of aligning the headstock. If you have a different lathe then you should consult the manual for that lathe, failing that hopefully someone has posted something to the internet that can help.

    I turned a wheel for my Laguna 12/16 soon after I got it. It came with a smooth shaft instead of a wheel. I bored a hole in the wheel on the lathe exactly the size of the factory "wheel" and glued it on. Works fine. As you say, the concept is more important than the method.

    Nice upgrade. I think I'll add a short piece of brass rod to the end of mine.

    Are there any disadvantages to using a direct drive lathe?

    • @SouthAucklandWoodturnersGuild
      @SouthAucklandWoodturnersGuild Месяц назад

      We have not found any downsides, all the permanent lathes at South Auckland Woodturners are Nova DVR direct drive, this is also what most of our members are using in their own workshops as well. Nova DVR is smoother and quieter, with excellent power delivery and torque, ideal for the training programs we run at the club.

    To more accurately register the 4 screw holes with the centre of the larger hole, align the same edge of each of the 4 holes with the cross lines. i.e. i.imgur.com/UPjNYoq.jpeg

    If you were going to turn the handle on the lathe while it was mounted on the wheel, why didn't you cut the center hole a little under sized and then true it up on the lathe? Then it would be perfectly balanced.

    Thanks for the tip. I need to clean mine down because I left wet turned oak shavings on the bed overnight.

      Wet oak, now you will have black on the bed of that nice new lathe from the tannins. Best to develop the habit of brushing the lathe down after use.

    Is that chuck rusted?

    • @SouthAucklandWoodturnersGuild
      @SouthAucklandWoodturnersGuild 4 месяца назад

      A very used chuck from Terry’s workshop, not actually rust. Note he is also running an adapter as his chuck is M30 from his lathe and the Neptune has 1 1/4” 8 tpi in New Zealand configuration.

    does the rotating head not have detents for alignment?

    • @SouthAucklandWoodturnersGuild
      @SouthAucklandWoodturnersGuild 6 месяцев назад

      Yes it does have detents, but for accurate realignment with the tailstock we have found better results using the acruline (double ended morse taper) with all lathes that have a swiveling head.

    It looks like a nice lathe for a midi lathe but for an everyday bowl lathe, I'd question the longevity of its design. It seems there is limited length in the spindle shaft for enough bearing support for heavy bowl roughing. The tailstock also looks a little lightweight to me. I'd consider this for a 2nd lathe for lighter finish work. I think it's still in the beta stage.

    • @SouthAucklandWoodturnersGuild
      @SouthAucklandWoodturnersGuild 6 месяцев назад

      The design of this lathe is so well proportioned that it looks lighter than it is. If you require a larger lathe and desire the Nova direct drive then the Orion on Nebula may be a better fit for you.
