Part Two Can the DCS 12V 80Ah Exteme run my winch? Power a 3000W inverter? Start my V8 truck? Run my 4kw bow thruster? Winches are actually not very large loads and used for short bursts, similar to bow thrusters. So to really stress test a 80Ah Extreme battery we are boiling a 4L pot of ice cold water with no lid in the wind! This is a significantly punishing task as it's a constant load. And ...

Charging DCS lithium batteries directly off 4WD alternators
Very very nice system. Thanks for the 0% recovery test. I have good knowledge of batteries and 12v stuff for out back traveling and that is a new one for me. That is also a great safety/recovery feature. I love the whole concept you have there. Are they two separate batteries and what happens if one fails? Interesting point about the battery temps up to 76 deg. As you said your batteries will do those types of temps but at a life span cost. This is a very good and informative video thank you. PS. I do run one of your 75ah batteries in my caravan and runs the inverter and coffee machine at 140amp draw very well
Thanks for the feedback. Confirming yes they are two separate batteries, if one has an issue the system still runs flawlessly on the other battery.
Good set up. Was it a simple thing to change the Toyota inverter and interior USBs over to the victron set up? Vic high country with batteries at 45 deg is ok. How will this go back in Qld or nth Qld or NT or the desert areas? I see these batteries are rated to 110 deg so I doubt they would be an issue. However, can they sustain the very high desert type temps when slow low range through sand dunes or similar. I guess the life expectancy will be reduced a reasonable amount. ### I just watched your French Line video where you had battery temps up to 76 deg which is just what I was asking about above. As you said your batteries will do those types of temps but at a life span cost. That was a very good and informative video thank you. Do you think that the battery temps would have been much less in a 300 Series?
Yes the access is pretty good in the LC300's. Pretty easy to do. When we first started doing this back in 2015, LFP as a cell chemistry wasn’t anywhere near as advanced as it is today - we can optimise the cycle life, tempereture stability and C rate triangle. But even back then LFP was a superior deep cycle cell chemistry and put AGM for example to shame under high temperature applications. More info here from 2017: www.deepcyclesystems.com.au/the-ultimate-dcs-12v-dual-battery/ Today LFP is the superior cell chemistry for every environment under the sun nothing comes close in 2024 that gap is twice as wide in comparision. So ambitent temperatures up to 80 degrees C is no longer a factor for us, as there is little effects on cell chemical ageing under 80 degrees C. Please note our Battery Management System will run up to 110 degrees C. The cells are not allowed to charge above 80 degrees C, that is tightly managed by the BMS and 2 independent battery cell temperatures, to ensure utmost safety and reliability, which our customers have grown accustomed to. The LC300 is unique its the coolest running engine bay we have ever come across on any 4WD in the world. Mainly attributed to the fact that it's a 'cold' running motor the coolant thermostat is set at 76 degrees C, and ontop of that the turbos have their own dedicated liquid cooling system and after cooling.
Why does my app say 59% an then. My batter is off an it says charge as soon as possible. But says. 59%. On the app can you please show us a video on how to reset the app?

Lovely ep and set ups
Nice place, i was camping there on the river last week. How was Billy goat bluff track we heard it was bad so didn't do, to many in the convoy.
Yes it's a nice spot, we had done this trip back in Nov 2023, Billy Goat Bluff Track was fine back then, no idea what it's like now...
Great video
Thanks!
OK Lithium batteries are beyond my budget, but I want to thank Paul and Dan online for coming to my rescue in the Vic High Country one night last Nov. I was showing the region off to a couple of friends from Switzerland. It rained all the last Friday afternoon as we were heading back out towards Mt Bulla when I tried and failed to get up a short steep, wet and rutted section just before the end of the King Billy Track. I slid back down and ended up axle deep in mud. When it got dark and I finally realised I had no hope of getting out without help (we were winch-less), we walked the last 1km up to the junction with Brookes Rd and Bluff Track, hoping to get a signal to call some mates. We saw Paul and Dan camping just off the road, mid meal under their awning to escape the still-pouring rain. When we told them our troubles, they immediately packed up their dinner, transferred a pile of gear from one of their vehicles to the other to make rooms for us, and we all headed back down to our Cruiser. With their (clearly extensive) recovery know-how and a fantastically equipped Hilux wagon, they had us out of the mud and up the rise onto solid track in no time. Those guys saved us from a very uncomfortable night in the Cruiser and who-knows-what hassle getting someone to come up and pull us out next day. Feel free to ridicule me for being up there in a single vehicle, not having a winch, trusting the forecast for no rain, etc, but I'm only an occasional participant in this fantastic pastime😞. Whatever. What I want to say is these two guys were fantastic, and if their lithium batteries are only half as good as their characters, they'll be bloody good batteries. Thanks again Paul and Dan.
Thanks David, glad to see you made it back home safely. And nice to see an older 100 series still rolling around those mountains. It was very wet that next morning there were more vehicles stuck in the same location as you - so that should make you feel better 😉 Our LC300 High Country trip video was just released: ruclips.net/video/BQ5BF0gIDuk/видео.html
Good Australian spirit to show your overseas visitors.
When I grow up I wanna own a DCS battery system in my house and car, and boat ⚡ Great info ✅
Grate insight on the Arvor 755 Paul, the upgrades look awesome! Do you still have the boat? how did you find it in summer was there enough ventilation in QLD sun? I am seriously considering the 755 as our next upgrade.
It's a fantastic boat, plenty of ventilation over summer with lots of hatches and windows and fans. I have a Sharrow Marine propeller coming for it shortly will be doing some more fuel consumption testing in the Whitsunday's later this year, very keen to see how the hull goes.
Thanks for the very inciteful video. Appreciate the effort in your designs and appraisals.
Our pleasure!
Great video as usual. What BMS (amperage) is this, which can handle 3000 w induction cooker ? Thanks
Thanking you, any of our batteries that run our 200A or larger BMS will support an induction cooker.
What type of LFP are these which accept 3C charging ?
Lishen 6C/6C.
Hi great work you guys and gals are doing at DCS, just one question in relation to what happens to the alternator if the BMS in the lithium's shut the batteries down if disconnecting the load from the alternator? would this not burn out the alternators diodes? what protections are in place for this occurring?
Great questions. The batteries can never be subject to a condition where the BMS would need to be shutting the batteries down, under such a scenario you would not only be risking potential damage to an alternator but you are risking damaging the batteries. Our Hybrid batteries have a massive power band and support 3000W inverters and winches so you don't have to ever worry about it.
What real life conditions would warrant such a test? Vibrations fatiguing all the soldered joints?
Vibrations fatiguing joints and connections, BMS failure, cell grading related issues, ingress related effects mainly vapour, over temperature conditions, high pulse discharge stresses, high load conditions, electronics and cells getting stressed from constant daily 60 degree C temperature swings, debris puncturing the cell packs etc.. batteries installed inside engine bays of 4WD vehicles are the absolute worst possible environment imaginable for any battery pack, they cop an absolute punishment.
Would be cool too have this connect through my Apple car play so I can check while I’m travelling 🤔
I really appreciate these videos!
Glad you like them!
haha wtf!!
nice , another video! cant wait to get the dual battery setup installed in the back of my new drifta draws on my fj thanks for fixing them up for me!
Enjoy!
Be good to see a comparison between the lithium and agm to see the drop
love these vids mate, pop a lid on and it should boil 25 percent quicker
Dig into those STAKES😅 good demonstration of that little 75Ah battery- BMS temperature higher on discharge than charging
recommended charging current is up to 50A on our 75Ah batteries, the BMS temp won't change at the 50A continuous charge rate.
Ok that’s the video I wanted to see. I might be able to get away with your 100ah battery. I want to run a 3000w inverter which it should do. I want to run a 2400w air fryer about 3 mins 3-4 times a day as the highest peak load. Would the BMS on your 100ah handle that load?
2400W x 20% losses on your inverter & cables so you'll be drawing ~2900W from the battery pack. 2900W / 12V, 241A. No the 100Ah slim won't support that. You would need our 80Ah or 200Ah to support ~240A on a single battery.
So with a dual battery set up in my car - should I be concerned with the SOC or the voltage? I can go from 100% soc back to 78% in a very short down time - running the car fridge
Our DBS have a fixed reserve via the battery protects set at 12.8V which is approx ~20%SOC depending on how hard your bouncing off that reserve voltage. It's a fully automatic protection system, so if you hit the reserve you just crank over your vehicle, you shouldn't ever be concerned about either.
nice to see with real-life examples
Will the alternator stop charging when the battery is fully charged? Your video shows 90A charge current when fully charged.
Yes once the batteries have tailed off (fully charged and gone to standby) the alternator runs the vehicle. Or with our Hybrid batteries our solar regulator takes over and runs the vehicle and both batteries and the alternator go to standby.
What about older “non smart” alternators?
The "smarts" are disabled on the alternators in this video.
Thanks Paul, I am considering purchasing a 755. The upgrade advice is welcome for customising later.
What brand solar panels would you recommend on yr roof to supplement the charging of batteries when the vehicle is NOT running?? Many thx, would like to see more vids.
www.deepcyclesystems.com.au/product/trina-415w-solar-panel/ Will make another video this week!
How far is the inverter from the battery bank and what guage cable did you use? I'm planning on putting the dual 90aH Lithium under bonnet but the inverter in my canopy
It's around 4 meters and I run 0 gauge. Yes you can do that no worries.
Why not run a Argofet Battery Isolator to charge the rear slim... Any new Adelaide based reseller?
Yes can run a FET alternator splitter if either your runnig a non smart alternator OR at least 370W+ solar. Otherwise it won't work on the 2.8L Toyota engines.
@@deepcyclesystems no I have a 12 200. So would that work then?
the capacity of the batteries doesn't matter, if you want to run a FET alternator splitter you need to consider the above guidelines.
why did i pay more for less usable power and bigger package with the hybrid 90ahs?
Two completely different systems. Single 200Ah slim line in cabin for a weekender, no redundancy and no solar and limited to 300A continuous power output. Vs 180Ah Hybrid DBS with twin BMSs that can do a combined 360A continuous power output. Plus integrated 80V/20A MPPT charger with a dedicated 3rd shunt and redundancy for remote touring.
skitz
Great Vid. Does the direct alternator charging charge the batteries to 100% or is the a loss of capacity due to the alternator charging?
www.deepcyclesystems.com.au/faq/#what-soc-do-modern-smart-alternators Most smart alternators typically bring the batteries back to around 80%SOC. That's why the system has an integrated 80V/20A MPPT charger so you can run a fixed panel to get them back to 100% if you actually needed that extra power.
why is it showing 100 percent charge . I thought you can't get that straight from the alternator?
this is a stress test, we have dialed the voltage regs up to produce absolute maximum power.
Great video, any advice for a 2004 1kz-te prado with 70amp alternator, I have killed 3 alternators so far trying to charge a two battery setup using a vsr, I am thinking of installing a 140amp alternator, will that help?
Same advise as always don't get after market alternators, OEM is best! Get a genuine one then you can run our 180Ah DBS. 70A is plenty enough and if you needed a faster recharge bolt up a 400W+ solar panel on the roof as well.
Do you know what year the hilux alternator was from in that test? The later 2.8L hilux got a slightly upgraded one
2020
Does the vehicle need the BMS to be disabled?
What do you mean by vehicle BMS?
@@deepcyclesystems Battery Management System. Examples such as Ford everest.
@@Ted...youtubee there is no such thing, modern vehicles will control alternators via the ECU. Your not touching any of that everything stays as the vehicle manufacturer intended.
Great work lads!! Lot's of companies talk about this stuff without doing a real tests so well done on that!!! Looking forward to Redarcs rebuttal!!!!
Insane technology these days. I just found your brand and know where I'll be looking next time!! Great job!!!
Whats the minimum charging voltage from the alternator? My Prado gets as low as 13.5V from the alternator. Will this get a dual system to 100%? Also, will an underbonnet battery last as long as one NOT underbonnet. I know you warrant them for 3 years under bonnet, but that's not the question.
More info on smart alternator voltages here: www.deepcyclesystems.com.au/faq/#what-soc-do-modern-smart-alternators Rule of thumb you'll half the service life of any battery chemistry in a high temp environment. Prado's run cool engine bays so with our proven long life cylindrical cell chemistry your laughing.
What about the vehicle's BMS? Like my new Everest, that have the current sensor on the negative terminal. Does the vehicle BMS need to be s/w altered? Can i use my lithium jump starter unit to jump start the car?
There's no room in the Everest engine bays for an auxiliary battery tray, so no way to run our Hybrid DBS in this vehicle. Everything stays as factory, doesn't matter if it's smart or fix voltage regulated alternators. Yes you can still use a jump starter pack if ever needed. But our batteries are big jump starters, so just get a little charge back into and then crank the engine over.
Hey does this setting suit the dual 90ah for a prado 150 or just use the ion mode?
Yes this is the settings you want to run on all our Hybrid Dual Battery Systems.
Great informative video. Thanks. Do the batteries charge to their full Ah capacity without a conventional 'profiled' charge pattern provided by a DC-DC charger?
www.deepcyclesystems.com.au/faq/#what-soc-do-modern-smart-alternators
